As I type this, we're in the sixth inning, and Jaret Wright is cruising. He has nine strikeouts, and that's the most he's had since he struck out nine on June 22, 2004. That day, two of his strikeouts were future Yankee teammate Carl Pavano.
Wrote my Insider today on Brian Cashman still having the power in the organization as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. George Steinbrenner said so in his statement on Wednesday, and Steve Swindal -- The Boss' son-in-law and future successor -- confirmed as much in a telephone interview yesterday.
And just like that, as I finished typing that graph, Wright strikes out potential Yankee trade-deadline acquisition Aubrey Huff, his 10th strikeout of the night. That ties his career-high set on Sept. 6, 1998. That's eight-plus years and two shoulder surgeries ago. It also may be his last strikeout of the night. Scott Proctor is warming in the bullpen, an interesting development considering the Yankees only lead 1-0.

Wright's game was huge for him and the team. As key guys heal, games like this count for a lot.
If Brian Cashman can get one more starter to take the ball on the 5th day and a good bat, then the Yankees are in position for a good August and September.
Unless Boston wants to kid itself, the Yankees should be very high on their radar. Whether they care to admit it or not, Boston doesn't have the full components to withstand the pressure the last 2 months bring. GO YANKEES !
I am going to keep posting this till July 31. Under no circumstances should we trade for a NL pitcher. The only decent pitcher that may be available is Zito. I would give up Hughes for Zito and Zito only. Put Cano in a package to get Soriano and Guillen, or Torii Hunter and Radke. The AL is far superior to the NL. Too many top NL pitchers have come over to the AL and got "ripped." Just watch how well Jeff Weaver will pitch in the NL.
I took my seat at Tropicana Field with thoughts on the game. A hitters delight with these two starters. The first two batters for Devil Rays single and double, second and third no one out. I was not feeling to good but Wright gets out of the jam with no runs. I take my hat off to Wright. He pitched well. I hope that he can keep it up with the new found slider. His resurgence can be a big help for the Yanks.
Roy, I can not agree with your choices for trades. I would take a more moderate approach. Giving up of Cano will haunt Yankee fans for a long time. I agree that pitching help should come from AL. I would take my chance on Soriano being available come November.
Don't know if Carl Pavano watched the great outing of Jaret Wright on Friday night but if he did, he saw a great example of what it's like to battle back from injuries and help his team.
At this point, nobody thinks he has it in him to do the same.
Carl Pavano has the worst attitude and is the most worthless acquisition since Kevin Brown. Maybe worse than Brown.
Remember how Pavano wanted out of NY because he was not treated right? Remember Pavano snickering that he was paid not to pitch?
Actually I hope to never see him pitch again for the Yankees. Not that that takes much to make that happen.
Wright was brilliant last night. Give him lots of credit for rising to that occasion. Now if he can increase his innings pitched he will be a solid 4th starter.
Hughes for Zito?
I can't believe how obsessed some of you people are with names.
