« A-Rod=Lightning Rod | Main | UPDATE: Yanks getting Abreu »

Like him or not...

As of last night the Yankees were optimistic of their chances to get Bobby Abreu, and with that comes a high OBP, a long homerless streak and a hefty contract.

Good move or bad?

Why?

Well, you know someone's got to be the one for other teams to dump their overpaid, over-rated and over-the-hill mistakes on and get in return young, talented, energetic, low-priced, up-and-coming stars.

Like they said, "it's a dirty job, but the Yankees got to be the one to do it."

If they trade another prospect (even a marginal one) for another piece of crap, on-the-decline veteran to make their dumb fans happy, then these Yankee fans have NO right to boo them if the Abreu's of the world come up empty in clutch situations and let them down once again. NO right whatsoever.

Good move for middling prospects, so long as the Yankees don't care about the money. Abreau has an incredible onbase percentage, and the power that mysteriously disappeared could well reappear with a change of scenery (and plenty of protection in a loaded Yankee lineup).

Eric, lighten up you sound like a red sox fan. The Abreu trade makes sense for a number of reasons. A-it will include a serviceable 5th starter ie Cory Lidle or Leiber. I think we REALLY want Lidle and are shooting it that way. Leiber was just a way to get Lidle into the deal. If we get some pop out od Abreu and a ton of walks from the left side AND great situational pinch hitting by a lefty to pull the other team into bringing in a lefty and taking a starter out of the game, we will benefit. Lidle can go deeper than Wright and we can dump Chacon altogether or use him in a trade with someone like Pittsburgh for another set-up man. We can rest or DH Bernie and also move Abreu, and Melky to right when Matsui gets back. We have a short bench most days and this gives us A.G., Abreu, Bernie, and Jorge off the bench for PH duties. This is how you win ballgames! I think this makes alot of sense. We can pick up his option and trade him to a wanna be contender for young arms in the offseason.

Andy, you make it sound like other teams are just as stupid as the Yankees.

I've got bad news for you. There aren't that many dumb GM's who'll pick up an Abreu off your hands for "young arms."

Try selling an Abreu in the offseason and see if you get any takers, especially if you ask for young arms. They'll laugh in your face and call you a sucker.

And another thing.
The Yankees don't need another person that can get on base.
Getting runners on base is not a problem with them, it's getting them in that is a bit more challenging.

Anyway, I wouldn't even worry about scoring runs because if you've got no pitching (like what we saw yesterday), forget Abreu, a lineup with Babe Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle or Mays ain't gonna help you.

To Eric:

You said it all thou that lineup probably would have been a bit closer. We need pitching and more where that comes from.

My only hope is that the Yanks are pursuing Abreu, in order to drive the price down on Craig Wilson and Roberto Hernandez. Wilson can immediately play in the outfield and when Matsui comes back, move to 1st base. Abreu has been on the offensive decline for over a year. Lieber has an ERA of about 5.5 and Lidle's is around 5. Put either of these guys in the AL and they will pitch even worse. Craig Wilson is a "blue collar" type player that reminds me of Jim Leyritz. They both play several positions and give you everything they have, everytime they hit the field. Roberto Hernandez is nothing to write home about, but I guess Torre needs another arm to "blow out." I would love to see Craig Wilson become a Yankee. Between Abreu and Wilson, the choice is obvious.

wallace matthews sounds like a frustrated met fan. he must have been happy when sheff, matsui, and cano got hurt. go back and write on boxing, you know nothing about baseball from the looks of today's article. or go back a write more articles bashing arod, you seem to like doing that. where is your professionalism ?

Note to Wallace Matthews:
Next time the Yanks field this team...
OF - Bernie, Bubba, Cabrera
IF - Jeter, Posada, Phillips, Cano
Ps - Wang, Rivera
... Please write about how they all came through their farm system.
What a fool!

I like the Abreu deal - we hvae to catch the Red Sox and this is definitely a step in the right direction. Who cares about those prospects, or Abreu's rediculous contract? I want to win a ring!
