Fasano In, Stinnett Out

Here's the release:

JULY 26, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YANKEES ACQUIRE C SAL FASANO FROM PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
FOR MINOR-LEAGUE INF HECTOR MADE;
DESIGNATE C KELLY STINNETT FOR ASSIGNMENT

The Yankees announced today that they have acquired catcher Sal Fasano from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for minor-league infielder Hector Made. To make room for Fasano on their 25-man and 40-man rosters, the Yankees designated catcher Kelly Stinnett for assignment.

Fasano, 34, batted .243 (34-for-140) with four home runs and 10 RBI in 50 games with the Phillies before he was placed on the 15-day disabled list on July 4 with left knee inflammation and subsequently designated for assignment on July 22. In 64 games with the Baltimore Orioles in 2005, Fasano posted a career-high 11 home runs in 160 at-bats (a ratio of one home run every 14.55 at-bats).

Originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 37th round of the 1993 draft, Fasano owns a career batting average of .225 with 45 home runs and 125 RBI. He was previously signed by the Yankees to a minor-league contract in 2004 (appeared in 13 games with the Yankees in Spring Training) and played in 76 games for Triple-A Columbus, batting .299 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI. Fasano has played in 368 career games with six different teams (Kansas City, 1996-2001; Oakland, 2000-01; Colorado, 2001; Anaheim, 2002; Baltimore, 2005 and Philadelphia in 2006).

Made, 21, was batting .286 (90-for-315) in 86 games with Class-A Tampa in 2006. He was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on July 17, 2001.

Stinnett, 36, was batting .228 (18-for-79) in 34 games with the Yankees this season. He was signed by the Yankees as a free agent to a one-year contract on November 30, 2005.

This is a good upgrade behind the plate. He has some pop in the bat and shows emotion. Posada and Fasano behind the plate will bring emotion to the field. This helps teams perform at a higher level.

We gave a player with some potential but from Hi-A ball. With Cano as a fixture at second base the trade cost was minimal.

Now, what can Chacon and Meyers get us?

why would you trade meyers he's filling the situational role exceptionally well. i hope steinbitch lets fasano keep his hobo-esque hair and facial hair, because him looking like cro magnon man will plate us at least 3 more runs a game guarunteed.

to mull: My thoughts are too much is made out of the lefty lefty or righty righty pitching matchups. Plus he is a pitcher who can't give you innings. He takes a spot on the roster where possibly a role player with some hitting ability could be used.

Am I the only one here that thinks this Made-Fasano trade is a bad trade for the Yankees?
You are giving up on a 21 year old with a good potential upside for a 35 year old role player with not much upside.
I don't even think Fasano is better than Stinnett. They are both below average hitters but Stinnett can throw out baserunners very well.
As a Yankee fan, I'm starting to get worried about the thinking or lack thereof in this organization.

Seeing as how he is struggling, AND a free agent at the end of this season, AND twice as talented injured as Sydney Pontoon or Kris Wilson, why isn't Brian Cashman talking to the Stro's about bringing Andy Petitte back to the Bronx? Imagine the lift that would give this town and the team. Houston is still alive yet probably looking to get some decent young talent. They need bullpen help in a big way. Ship Duncan and Matt Smith or T.J. Beam and some cash to Houston ASAP.

trade or sign Carl Everett-he will come cheap. if he acts like a jerk, the Yanks can just drop him.

I don't mind the Yankees trading for Sal Fasano at all. I believe Fasano to be a better defensive player behind the dish and he has had more pop in his bat of late than Kelly Stinnett provided for the team. Remember, this is a type of player who is going to start every fifth day for the Yankees, so little upgrades here and there are always welcome. As far as Hector Made, he is 21 years old and was regarded highly before this season, however, has apparently not progressed as the Yankees had hoped. Good luck to him and maybe one day he will be a successful MLB player.

The one thing I am concerned about is the recent big rumor about the Yankees trading Scott Proctor to the Braves for Wilson Betemit. On the surface, this is not a bad deal at all. You are trading a middle reliever for a potential everyday player, and at worst a good utility player. But the issue lies in the fact of the ineffective from the other middle relievers such as Kyle Farnsworth and T.J. Beam. They have been on-and-off, and while Proctor has occasionally bombed out there, he has been the more reliable of the three pitchers. I think it is a tremendous risk to pull the trigger on such a deal unless someone like Tom Gordon is on the way to NY.

Don't even mention Tom Chokedon. After what we went through with him, you guys still haven't had enough?

For arguments sake the Yankees made a good trade for Fasano who is an upgrade with his professionalism and overall no how behind the plate and will never complain when asked to do anythind. Made was limited in his upside, while Stinnett was definitely worse than Flaherty who he replaced. I would be elated if we went and got Pettitte and Proctor for Betemit is a no-brainer. I live in Atlanta and he would be an excellent third baseman, where we could move A-Rod to 1st and play Giambi full time DH

ARod is not moving to 1st, at least not for another 4-5 years. Betemit would be nice as an addition to the bench, but dealing Proctor without getting another reliever in exchange severely weakens an already razor-thin bullpen, so it doesn't much make sense. Fasano is a good pickup...he doesn't hit much better than Stinnett but his defense is supposedly much better. I've just about had it with Kelly's 4-hoppers to second base.

Sal Fasano is a decent move. Stinnett just can't hit. With the season moving along, Posada will need to be rested whenever possible to be fresh for the playoffs. It shouldn't take Sal very long to tune in to the pitching staff.
