Damon down
Johnny Damon is not in today's starting lineup because he still has soreness in his calves, which he said started to bother him during the early innings yesterday. He also has been suffering from a stomach ailment of some sort since Friday night, saying he is unable to keep food down. But nothing is wrong with his toe, he said.
Big opportunity for the Yankees today. A sweep of the White Sox, which would pull them to within three games of Chicago in the wild card standings, would be really impressive given the state the Yankees were in a week before the All-Star break.
What do all of you attribute their turnaround to?
Also, in case you missed it, George Steinbrenner admitted yesterday there is a player he would like to acquire over the field of candidates, and it sure seems that player is Bobby Abreu. And you know what happens when The Boss wants something...

I attribute the turnaround to better pitching. Honestly, you couldn't blame that blowout in Cleveland on anyone but Chacon. He put it out of reach early.
Also, it seems to me like they're pressing less. Andy Phillips said Torre told them that he liked everyone in the room, and maybe that settled them down. They're no longer swinging like their careers depend on hitting a homerun at every AB.
George, say NO to Abreu.
Offense is not your problem. If you want to trade, go after pitching but not Abreu.
Don't give up any first-tier prospects either.
When will George learn, after all these years of trading away our prospects and getting other peoples aging problems?
I attribute their recent success to pitching and better defense. They have a similar look in their approach to offense as they did in the late 90's. Timely hitting and aggressive running plus their bench and roll players are performing well. Phillips at first most of the time is a plus.
George knows that pitching is the key to any success but someone must remind him. If, we had a choice right now of Gordon or Abreu. I go with flash. We would have a fairly solid 7 through 9 inning pitching routine.
We must not forget the performance that Melky is giving us. Well above our expectations. The team setup as is with an upgrade in pitching and Matsui's return makes Sheffield expendable in my eyes.
^ Right you are. In fact, either Matsui or Sheffield can go.
With Melky and Phillips, you know they will only get better. In fact, in a year or two, Melky will not only be a better player than Abreu, but will be a star, while Abreu will probably be a has been by then.
If the Yankees trade him away now for Abreu, in a year or two, they won't be able to get him back from the Phillies even if they went on their hands and knees.
Is that what you want George?
Hopefully, Cashman will have more common sense than his senile owner.
Leave well enough alone. I've never thought that much of Bobby Abreu. For all his apparent shortcomings, not the least of which is a lack of pop, Melky Cabrera makes plays, which is more than we can say about any other corner outfielder the Yankees have had in the last few years. He's not a Matsui or Sheffield at the plate, but Cabrera does all the things that it takes to win. I'm afraid an Abreu would upset the delicate balance of the team right now. The Yanks have a group of overachievers proving their mettle in a pennant race. Torre's managing has been superb. If only he had a reliable setup man for Mariano.
Melky reminds me of a very young Coco Crisp. His trade value is increasing daily, and he will most likely have to be traded if we want either Soriano or The D.Train. If "Cash" trades Melky and we don't make the World Series, the deal will haunt him, a la Jay Buhner. Cash better get "top value" for Melky or his tenure as G.M. will be a very short one.
To Brian Cashman, Do not mettle with the teams chemistry. The Yankees are finally not believing that All Stars are necessarily better toward the end of their career then some unheralded young player. If, Matusi comes back stick him in RF. Get another pitcher but not at the expense of the formula that is working well.Do not give away young prospects. Retrain the thinking of other GM's that the yanks are desparate to win at all costs.
Wait out getting another hitter until we get the final word on Matsui or Shef, if they're done for the season, we'll need a bit more power from the corner OF.
Pitching is always welcome. Give Ponson a couple of starts before making a decission. The offense will perk up even more when Cano is back FT. Same with Damen.
Everyone else pretty much said what's going good right now. My thoughts are as follows:
1. The starters are doing a good job. Unit has been pitching more good games than clunkers, and Wang is the real deal! 2. Better defense. Posada is throwing out more base runners while Melky and Crosby are throwing out guys trying to stretch hits. Teams can't run on the Yanks like they were before. 3. Even with the Red Sox running off 12 straight and the Yanks playing inconsistently, the Sox haven't run off with the lead. 4. The kids are playing great and unless they can get a stud at the deadline( Halliday, Osvalt or Santana), don't do anything!!
Do not deal Melky! I thought at one point I'd do it for Soriano, but after Melky keeps making clutch plays and showed grit in recovering from that slump, I say keep the kid. As the White Sox showed with Podsednik last season, you don't need a power bat in every OF slot to win a championship. Having a guy who can hit to all fields, run the bases, and play agressive defense is a real asset. Plus, the Yanks still have A-Rod and Giambi to provide thunder, with Matsui hopefully bringing more in the stretch.
Also, getting guys like Sanders or Guillen from the Nats seems like a waste of time at this point.
This to Roy above.
What's with all this we gotta trade Melky business?
Why are the Yankees and their fans always obsessed with other team's players?
I'd bet that if Melky was on another team, the same idiots that want to see him traded, will probably want to trade for him.
Is that retarded?
You guys always want somebody else's players when what you got is just as if not better.
Oops! The comment above was from me. I forgot to write my name.
