Trading Opinions

There seems to be a lot of chatter on this site about whether the Yankees should trade their prospects or stand pat. A couple of points:

1. The Yankees don't often stand pat and their needs might be even greater now, depending on how long Robinson Cano is sidelined.
2. How convinced are you that the young farmhands are genuine big-time prospects? The consensus is that pitcher Phil Hughes is the real deal, but I'm skeptical about young pitchers. Until Cano and Chien-Ming Wang turned up as gems last season, the Yankees hadn't developed many legit prospects since the days of Jeter-Posada-Bernie-Rivera. Melky Cabrera doesn't look like an everyday answer to me.
3. Some of you bloggers are saying you'd be content to "rebuild" and sacrifice a possible playoff run this year. But do you really think the Yankees' system is so well-stocked that you can expect it to produce several championship-caliber players?
4. A sobering thought. Derek Jeter turned 32 last night. Jorge Posada turns 35 in August. Mariano Rivera is 36. Bernie Williams turns 38 in September. Will any of these so-called prospects some of you seem so willing to wait for be ready in time to replace these franchise cornerstones? Or, better yet, play with them and under Joe Torre?

Deals or no deals? I trust Brian Cashman's ability to make a good trade more than I trust the Yankees' minor-league system. Let the trading begin.

Sorry, Bob, we have tried it your way every year since 2000. How has that worked out? Here is a recap: 0-5 in World Series wins.

It is time for the Yankees to try something different: keep the prospects. Groom them, nurture them, maybe throw some of them out there raw.

Build the team from within and plan to replace some aging players. The Yankees need a master plan of succession and rebuilding. They need to plan for 2008, 2009, and beyond, not just next Friday.

The Tampa mentality has been to trade anything they have for anything they can get and hope it works. Well, it does not work. It has not worked. And it will not work.

The prospects are the lifeblood of a team, not fodder for trades. The organization that treats them as talent will be more likely to win.

Prospect aren't fungible.

All one needs to do is examine Hughes's K/9, K/BB, WHIP, etc. to realize that he is a once in a generation talent.

Trading him would be lunacy.

What Paul said. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Giving away the farm for aging vets has not worked for us. Time to try something new.

I'm sure we'll make a trade or two. But for a Craig Wilson type, not a Sori or Tori or Abreu. Another Small or Chacon, not a Pavano.

Call me crazy but I would develop from our system. We have traded and purchased in our attempt to win or being in the World Series. We have inflated our salary structure in conjunction with this goal.Paying top dollar to get guys to come to New York. Jeter, Posada and Jorge were raised in the New York way to play baseball. It doesn't work the other way. We always wait a year for players to adjust except for John Damon who has been a delight to watch and root for. This system has not worked. The one offensive statistic that would suffer from diverting from this plan is the home run production. You can see it today with the injuries to our corner outfielders. If we develop pitchers and players through the system then the NY indoctrination is not a factor. A-rod is a classic example. The best 5-tool player that money can provide and he struggles where the our homegrown guys have produced. Melky is a joy to watch but I agree he's not a Cano. I watch him hustle and keep potential doubles to singles let him mature. Sure every team has to trade but pick your spots and have the talent on the farm to complete the trade. The difference between a .300 hitter an a.250 hitter regular player over the the seaon is one hit a week. We are over paying for some of our FA pickups who have not brought the trophy home. Pavano, Wright, A-rod, Giambi where is the 27 World Series banner. If we continue this way, the results will be the same.

The only "untouchable" on the Yankee roster is Wang. Everybody else is "trade-bait," including A-Rod. And don't laugh at A-Rod being the subject of trade rumors. He has a huge contract, but everytime he gets traded, a different team is taking a "bite out of the apple," reducing the size of that teams current monetary obligation. I believe the Dodgers would be interested in A-Rod, with J.D.Drew going to the Yankees. The Dodgers have a lot of good, young, cheap, outfielders ready to play full-time in L.A. Rememeber, the Dodgers traded Piazza when he was the "toast of L.A." for Sheffield. They are dueling the Angels for that huge Latino fan base in L.A. They also are in a media market that generates the money to afford A-Rod. So you have a team with a history of trading for big name players, the current incentive to do it again, and the monetary means to make it work.

Roy, are you insane? Trade A-Rod? And who, pray tell, will play third base for us? And why the hell would we want J.D. Drew, who's always one step away from another DL stint? We've got plenty of people for that here already if that's what you're looking for. Unless of course you mean to trade A-Rod for prospects, but I doubt it.

And, even if A-Rod were tradeable, the chances of him waiving his no-trade clause to go to the Dodgers are less than tiny.

For those of you wondering if A-ROD would consent to a trade, just look at his face everytime he boots a ball at 3rd, or fails to produce with runners on base. He is ready to go. Personally, I like the guy. He plays everyday, gives you everything he has, and never whines. But his frustration continues to mount, as indicated by his facial expressions and body language in general. He would consent to a trade to a select few teams. My guess would be either SoCal team would be okay with him. Getting a 3rd baseman is no problem, as there are plenty available. We could get Joe Randa from Pitt. or if we wanted use Cairo. J.D.Drew is a great player, that has had injury problems. If I was the Yankee G.M. I would make this deal, and try to eat as little of A-Rods contract as possible. The Yanks would be happy and A-Rod would be happy.

i dont want to be traded, jerk

Serenity now.

I doubt A-Rod wants to be traded. Sure, maybe it would be a smoother ride for him, but that would be admitting he failed in NY after asking to be traded there. I doubt he'd want to admit to failure...he's got too much pride for that.

As for plenty of 3rd basemen being available, do you seriously compare Joe Randa (.245 BA/.284 OBP/.353 SLG/.637 OPS; 2 HRs and 9 RBI) to A-Rod? And don't even get me started on Cairo, who's a liability both offensively and defensively. Yeah, Alex's scuffling a bit right now but he's _still_ one of the best 3B's in the majors, it shouldn't have to explained.

I really don't understand the hatred that so many Yankee fans have for Rodriguez....

The Yankees farm system is not as bad off as some would think. Many scouts see them at about the middle of the pack. Good prospects such as Philip Hughes and CF Brett Gardner should be left alone but if it really makes a difference this year they'll be gone and it won't be Cashman's doing. The whole world knows who will make that decision.

July 31st can't pass soon enough, hopefully with all good prospects still in the fold.

Speaking of decision-making, there's a puff piece in today's NYPost about Cashman being in charge of baseball ops.

As it appears, the Yanks seem to be slipping in the standings. In light of Cano's ailment, I think the Yankees need to start thinking about trades to bridge the gap in the wild card and the AL East.

Many people believe that the Yankees should trade for Zito; however, lets remember that he is going to be a free-agent this year. I think that we can assume that the Yankees will sign him, especially since we love Oakland transplants a la Damon and Giambi.

I think Cashman should examine the slumping Pirates. There are two hidden gems: the first which has been thrown around is Craig Wilson and the other is Oliver Perez. Despite having horrible numbers the past two years, remember Perez was one of the best strikeout pitchers in the NL in 2004. If he and the Gator work on his control there is no doubt that he can return to dominance. The Yankees would not have to trade any A prospects for these players; perhaps they could ship Thompson or/and Henn to the Pirates. If these two players are acquired there is no doubt that the Yankees can close the gap between the Red Sox.

If the Yankees sign Zito and trade for Perez there will be 3 (including Wang) total pitchers under 30 for the 2007 season. Perhaps the Yankees should entertain promoting Hughes to the big leagues because of his recent success. If Hugues debuts in the majors next year that brings the total to 4 pitchers under 30. Cashman wanted to build youth, well he has the chance now.

Some have said let's bring up Hughes now and see what he's got. That might depend on his mental makeup which only he and those working with him know. If those people say he can handle it then great. Many young pitchers have come up to the big leagues, get shelled and it destroys their confidence. Maybe Hughes isn't one of those.

The Yanks might be able to get C. Wilson cheap, but the Pirates know what they have in Perez.

The Yankees farm system is in better shape can some think. Lately, the so-called experts give them high marks. Cashman can use some of them in deals but should be careful. Other GM's look for a little extra in deals with the Yankees as the past has shown and Cashman should hold firm or no deal. First of all, until Oakland starts to slide, Zito is going nowhere and Carlos Lee will not come cheap. The standings in the next 3 weeks will dictate who's available and for how much.

I'm one of those that believes the Yankees should develop from within the farm system and will continue to believe it but for the immediate needs of an outfielder and pitching, Cashman could start with the D-Rays. Go after Ty Wigginton who's having a nice year in a versatile role. He's played 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the infield and both corner positions more than adequate and hits well. He also knows NYC from being with the Mets. The D-Rays are always looking for pitching so offer somebody like Sean Henn or another prospect not figuring in future plans. Then put a package together for pitching from the likes of Crosby, Thompson, Reese, and Duncan or others Meantime the farm system won't take a heavy hit.

Why do all these discussions have to lead to "trade A-Rod." To all the morons who are booing him at the stadium (a disgraceful and self-defeating attitude), I would point out that his OBP is quite comparable to that of Jeter. He was AL player of the month in May and MVP last year. The yanks would have not been in the playoffs in 2005 without him. I bet this "experts" haven't played baseball in their lives. Otherwise, they would now that batting is a losing game: good hitters do it well only 3 out of 10 times! Use your brains!

Thank you for stopping by my site

Guys, I dont care who's MVP or player of the week, month... I need a RING.
Boston won a ring, BOSTON... We lose to do marlins, Angels (again) kicks are boots... So, trade-Sell whoever U want But assure me the win

I agree. A-rod doesnt want to be traded. The yankees would be out of their mind to trade a-rod for lesser players. And as for the so called "yankee fans", if their true yankee fans why boo the best player in the game and he is not even 31? A-rod will help the yankees win that championship sooner or later.

You are all idiots if you want to trade A-rod. Try just for once not to trade away all the minor league prospects. The yankees have made good picks in the past (even though they have the biggest bust of all time). We can sign Zito in the offseason, trade for a pitcher that is proven in the playoffs that would be pretty cheap like Livan Hernandez. He's only 31, and has one a world series against us. He has struggled this year but our offense should give him enough support to get him wins. We could probably give up a 2nd rate prospect and Henn. We might be able to get Soriano for a fairly good deal, too. Obviously we would need to give up a few good prospects. But Soriano is only 30 and he plays the OF now. Just don't give up Phil Hughes, I think he is a monster and is All-Star caliber.

wow y would u trade arod
he is still a good player?
ok
