Lasting impression
This being a Yankees blog, I may be treading some water here, but I'll ask anyway.
I'm interested in hearing what Yankee fans think of Lastings Milledge slapping hands with fans along the first-base line after his two-out, game-tying homer Sunday.
Was it unsportsmanlike? Did it break the unwritten rules of baseball? Were you offended, or did you find the display refreshing? Gotta believe the Giants will plunk him with a pitch the next time they see him, even if it's not until next season.
Imagine what the reaction would have been if A-Rod did that?

I didn't like it, but these days that sort of behavior seems to be par for the course.
I have absolutely no problem with it. It's time that baseball's 'Unwritten Rules' were updated. So, Milledge got excited and shared his joy with the fans. That's better than most athletes who ignore the fans who pay good money. My guess is a lot of fans will never forgot those high fives, and that's good for baseball. Besides, if you hate what Milledge did you have to hate the 'Lambeau Leap,' and I don't see anybody complaining about that.
I haven't seen the replay of it, but reading about it didn't bother me. He's a young guy and it's his first Major League home run. Who wouldn't be happy? And if I were a kid sitting by the field and he slapped my hand, I'd be so excited and wouldn't forget that moment ever. I love and appreciate when players take the time to acknowledge the fans. What Lastings did wasn't half as bad as a batter who swats a homer and just stands there admiring it and staring down the pitcher, like what Manny does. I could understand why that would irritate a pitcher.
When a player does something that electrifies the crowd while on offense, he should go the "curtain call" route. If he is on defense, a modest "doffing" of his cap is in order. If he wants to "high five" spectators, he should wait till the game is over. Remember, the Mets lost the game where Milledge did "his thing."
I just don't see what all the fuss is about. He didn't show up his teammates, the umps, or the opposition. He merely made a gesture of support to the fans. Sammy Sosa used to race out past the fans and everyone loved him for it. "Manny being Manny" has come to mean standing in the batters box, admiring homeruns (and singles). But when a rookie engages the fans, it's bad. Makes no sense.
He hit his first homer in the major leagues which tied the score. I have very little problem with his display of happiness with the fans. He's living a dream. Slapping High 5's in a very casual way I might add. He was quite conservative as opposed to the clowns in the NFL who do a dance if they make a tackle. He has been spoken to by his manager and mentor on the team. Now, we will see if he's a head case or not.
I'm much closer to the refreshing side of the coin. Milledge has been known to style, but I happened to see that live and I live in Boston (gotta keep your enemies close). Obviously there is a time and place for things like that, but that was sheer joy on his part. I'm happy for the kid. Nobody should get too bent out of shape about that one if you ask me. What a great moment to have tied the game off allegedly one of the NL's better (sic) closers. Too bad they didn't win the game. Unlike most Yankee fans I have no hate in my heart for the Mets. They are like cousins. I don't like Interleague play, but I'd rather lose to them than Boston anyday. The World Series of 2000 was another matter, but in general I have no problem when the Mets do well. I'm a long time Willie Randolph guy. Great start to a great career for Milledge hopefully. Good luck to him.
