Are you buying Brian Cashman's assertion that his primary focus on the trade front is pitching, even after the latest news about Gary Sheffield's surgery that will keep the slugging rightfielder out unit September? I can't help but be skeptical.
No Matsui and no Sheffield means no depth in the lineup, as far as genuine power is concerned. Yes, Melky Cabrera has been a revelation and, yes, Bernie Williams has done a decent job. But can they keep it up? Joe Torre joined Cashman Thursday in saying that pitching remains the primary concern and that the lineup is productive enough. Maybe.
It's true that the pitching staff has its own fragility to deal with, be it age or injuries. But unless we're talking Dontrelle Willis, what worthy pitchers are out there? So don't be surprised if Cashman finds a way to turn minor-league prospects into a veteran outfield replacement. And wouldn't old friend Alfonso Soriano fit in nicely?

Both short and long term, Tori Hunter should be the outfielder that Cashman goes after. Though his production has dropped off a bit this year, he is great in center. Move Damon to left and hand right over to Melky for the next 4 years. The price in prospects shouldn't be exorbitant, as the Twins simply can't afford him. The price for Soriano would probably not leave any "chips" left to get a pitcher with. Plus, Soriano's current numbers are a reflection of the growing talent difference in the 2 leagues. This is why "Cash" must also get an A.L. pitcher when he goes shopping.
Soriano? Sorry, no. The Yanks don't need another weak defensive player. I think Torii Hunter is the one to persue. Move Damon to another OF spot, keep Matsui, and have Melky get some quality starts backing up people. I know this is almost sacrilegious , but if Bernie doesn't decide to leave at the end of the season, it's time to politely nudge him out the door.

Forget Soriano. He is a defensive liabilty and strikes out too much.
The same for Torii Hunter.
An outfield of Damon in center, Matsui in left and Melky or Bubba Crosby in right will be fine.
The only player the Yankees should be interested in acquiring is Barry Zito.
