Update on Daniel Murphy

It appears that what the Mets intially believed was a knee issue for Daniel Murphy is actually a hamstring strain. Good thing they got him to an MRI machine.

Here's the full update from the team below:

The Mets' Daniel Murphy underwent an MRI this morning at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery and the test revealed that he has a Grade 2 Strain of the right hamstring. Murphy felt discomfort in the leg in pre-game batting practice of his November 11th Arizona Fall League game.

He will skip winter league ball in Puerto Rico so that he can be ready for the opening of Spring Training this February in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

David,

Saw you on SNY last night, and I wanted to ask why you were so quick to shoot down the possibility of signing Bobby Abreu. I got that he would be another lefthanded hitter in a team that already as a surplus of lefties, but I think if the Mets were to go that road it would be in right-field in lieu of another lefty in Ryan Church.

Abreu is familiar with the NL East and has had success playing in NY, and while he might seem "soft" in his play near the wall, he definitely can grind out a single/walk when his team desperately needs one. He's a tough out, whereas all to often last season players like Wright and Reyes were incapable of working the count to get on base in a big spot.

If the Mets signed Abreu, they then could possibly trade Church for bullpen help etc.

Also a big discussion last night was the need to replace the Tatis/Murphy platoon with a proven player. I think that should be the last thing on the Mets' mind, considering an upgrade to the rotation, bullpen, second base, and even catcher would probably help this team more than the addition of someone like Ibanez. Thoughts?

I agree with you...Abreu would be a good pickup...he might even be able to teach patience at the plate to a few of these guys....

Getting an outfielder (ANY OUTFIELDER) is the least of the Mets concern. The Mets main concern is PITCHING, PITCHING, PITCHING. This includes starting pitching, where they have two openings (after Santana, Maine, and Pelfrey) and as many as seven bullpen positions (there may not be anybody returning after dismal preformances the past two years.)

An upgrade at secondbase would be nice, but only after the pitching has been resolved. Outfield is not a priority. Church's salary ($2 mil) is much less than Abreu is going to get.

To begin this World Series quest for the 2009 season the Mets need to sign reliever K-Rod for 3 years at about 12 million a year. If he doesn't want that then sign Brian Fuentes at 11 million per
year. Sign catcher Jason Veritek for 2 years at 6 million per year.

Trade catcher Brian Schnieder, lefty Jason Vargas, and a minor leaguer for pitcher Bronson Arroyo ( Cincinnati wants a good catcher real bad).

Trade inf.-of Daniel Murphy, reliever Duaner Sanchez, and second baseman Arg. Reyes to the Dodgers for Of. Matt Kemp and pitcher Troncoso.

Sign pitcher Juan Cruz as a middle reliever

Last but not least, trade Aaron Heilman and Of. Angel Pagan to the Tampa Bay Rays for Pitcher Edwin Jackson. If the Rays want another minor league player involved, see that happens. Jackson is worth it.

What do you think of these transactions?
