Does CC make $ense?
If the Mets do go toe-to-toe with the Yankees for CC Sabathia, as was loosely suggested here, that would explain some of their exploration of trade possibilities for closer. With a payroll still expected to be around $140 million for next season, it seems very, very unlikely the Mets would give Sabathia $25 million annually for the next six years or so -- as well as pay someone like K-Rod an additional $15 million per season for four?
That's not even counting what they hope to do for leftfield -- Jermaine Dye ($11 mil)? -- or second base, where they could sign Orlando Hudson and hopefully rid themselves of Luis Castillo (3 yrs, $18 million). And we haven't even brought up the cost of more bullpen help and possibly another starter.
Any serious pursuit of Sabathia would jack up the price with the Yankees involved, and that would bring the Mets to the neighborhood of a $180-million payroll by the time spring training begins. That's a significant escalation and not one I can see happening at this point. Unless they plan on selling even more Blue Smoke BBQ at Citi Field than was originally projected.

I love the idea of CC and Johan but how realistic is it? I think CC is amazing and would compliment Johan well, give the rebuilt pen some help, pretty regularly, and he's a lefty that would give the Phillies lefty heavy lineup so much trouble. BUT CC said he wasn't going to play anywhere east of Ohio. He can go wherever he wants and I hope he comes this way but I think we need to lock up needs before we look into wants. Locking up the pen should be priority number 1. Go after one of the closers and then go from there. After watching the Dodgers last year I like Beimel a lot. I think he'd be a great upgrade. I've heard the O's have interest in Heilman why not dump him off and try and work out a deal to get Brian Roberts in there? He commands a big contract but so does the one legged waste of cash Castillo. He'd fill the need for an everyday 2B and would compliment the lineup beautifully. If that doesn't work then go after Hudson or keep 2B in house and convert Murphy like was discussed at the end of last season. I wouldn't mind seeing Pat Burrell don a Mets jersey and play LF. He's a 30/100 player, has experience and knows the division. Plus it's always nice to stick it to the Phillies any and every chance we can. Those are my thoughts on free-agency.

Amen, brother! I've been singing Beimel's praises for a few weeks now. He'd be a perfect set-up guy.
As far as CC, we don't need him. I'd rather see them go after Lowe.
Let's hope the front office think the same.
Agreed. I'd love to have CC and he'd be great BUT not at the cost of addressing more important needs.
My keys to success (in order):
bullpen
target Fuentes, K-Rod, Beimel, Bob Howry, Kerry Wood, Brandon Lyon. Dump Schoe., trade Heilman, deal Sanchez/give lesser role
SP
target Lowe, Burnett, Garland, Dempster or if they have to Sheets or Oliver Perez.
The goal is to get two pitchers. If they can lock one down then look at CC, if he's still there.
2B
Roberts (Heilman trade), O. Hudson, Murphy, or Castillo platooned with someone.
LF
Burrell, Ibanez Bonds, or Murphy and/or Evans.
CC NONO we need bullpen help I don;t want Burrell in left sacrifice defense and bring in Dunn SP bring in Garland or Lowe bullpen get rid of Heilman scwerhdies (however you spell it) get Beimel K-Rod only if he lowers price or Fuentes Fuentes is a better option he is a lefty who pitched well in Coors Field a hitters park and please for Pete's sake cast off Castillo bring in Hudson
