Mets get Manuel cheap, K-Rod price dropping?
The Mets got their man Friday when Jerry Manuel agreed to a two-year extension worth roughly $2 million with a team option for 2011. Manuel did a good job and deserved to come back, but the risk on the Mets' part is pretty small. Two years is not much security for a manager -- even Willie Randolph, with no experience, got three in his first contract -- but Manuel really had no choice, especially when he heard footsteps from Bobby Valentine.
If he turned down the opportunity to manage what is likely to be a $150-million team next year, and again a playoff favorite, it would have been a big mistake, as my colleague Ken Davidoff points out.
As for K-Rod, that was one costly pitch he threw to J.D. Drew last night, and I'm not even talking about what it meant for the Angels, who are looking at 2-0 death knell with the series returning to Fenway. When you're days away from free agency, it helps to have a huge October -- see Beltran, Carlos -- and K-Rod serving up that home run was not great for his resume.
Fred and Jeff, write that one down on the yellow legal pad and circle it for those negotiating sessions come November and December.

Where are the guys who argued with me all yar that the Sox would not beat the Angels ??
Come on you know who you are....Sox vs. Phillies....CALLED IT GAME ONE !!
Theo Epstein for Mets Dictator.... for LIFE!
I am going Dodgers/Sox world series....Manny is coming back to Fenway
with castillo, minaya & manuel another collapse!!!
minaya, manuel & castillo another scene of collapse!!!
I still cannot believe there is not more outrage over Minaya getting a deal for 4 years. FINE, you do not have to be like me and want him fired, but to applaud him and give him years ????????
Wilpons are LOST !!
Noname you are soooooooo correct !! Minaya back, wants Delgado back, says Castillo can do better.....IT is like a BAD DREAM !!!
Looks like we're heading towards a RedSox v Dodger World Series.
Regarding Castillo, someone on the radio suggested he's lied about his age and he is older than the 32 years listed on the roster. This makes some sense yet I thought the post-9/11 documentation requirements made it almost possible now for outsiders seeking to work in the US to lie about their age.
Does any of this sound logical...that Castillo could be 36 or 37 hence the poor condition of his knees....?
A 5th grader could of seen that Castillo should not of been given a deal. He was a pesky hitter on ASTROTURF......I have never seen a worse player at the plate that was given his type of money. Not to mention the fact he is a cancer in the locker room.
Omar is plain and simply a MORON....and the Wilpons are even worse for fiving him a deal!
FO - I have to agree with you.
His swing is bizarre. The slap works for Ichiro but not Castillo.
Castillo can make himself useful over the next 3 years by teaching Murphy, Evans, etc how to become effective bunters.
I have to say I am truly disappointed and disgusted. Disappointed by Omar's 3 year extension. It really disgusts me every time I see Darren Oliver or Chad Bradford or Dan Wheeler pitching for another team and look at our bullpen of losers! Disgusted that Manuel is coming back, knowing that we could have gotten Bobby V! Let's give a 2 year contract to the manager as a reward for finishing second to the crummy Brewers!! When is this organization going to wise up.
Manual does have some security in that the Mets are still paying Willie for two (is it three) more years and they probably dont want to be paying three managers at the same time...
very similar to when Willie was hired on the cheap as they were still paying Howe.
