Delgado back -- for now

cdoption.jpgThe Mets made it official this morning by picking up the $12-million option on Carlos Delgado. But that doesn't mean they have to keep him.

I'm not expecting Delgado to be anywhere but Flushing, but there is an argument to trading him while his value is this high. Delgado is 36 and there's no guarantee he'll be able to follow up with another 38-homer, 115-RBI season. Plus, he could be tempting for an AL club looking to split some time at first base/DH.

I think they should keep him unless there is a "too good to refuse" offer that includes a quality starter/and or reliever.

Let's be realistic here. What kind of market would there really be for a 36-year old 1B?

Maybe the Angels would have interest if they don't re-sign Texieira. The Red Sox wouldn't touch him since they focus on OBP. The Yanks already have aging veterans clogging up the roster, even with Giambi leaving. No other teams can really afford to add that kind of salary. A reunion with Toronto is a long shot.

TRADE HIM NOW WHILE HIS VALUE HIS HIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

He will not put up those numbers again. And whatever they get for him will be more valuable to the Mets next season and the future than what Delgado would do for them next season only.

It's a no-brainer. Make the trade Omar.

Again I agree C.M -

He MUST GO !! Change the lockeroom asap !!!

Wake up Omar...You do not need an all star at every position...You need dirt dogs and gamers...CLUTCH PLAYERS !!

Like the Phillies....Hope you all followed my lead form game on of the regular season...Brought back a BUNDLE !!!

I agree FIRE OMAR -

Heads must ROLL !! Bring back Wally BACKMAN !!!

Wake up, Fred WILPON... You need to fire your son JEFF who hired OMAR !! Jeff's SILVER SPOON got us into this MESS !!

Do you understand how emphatic I AM ABOUT THIS !!!

Don't be quit to blame Omar if he doesn't trade him. If YOU know he won't have another year like he did now, don't you think other clubs do too?

oK. Think about it. Delgado is 59 Million in the hole with Atlanta. Will Beckenstein still offer a value package for the "HOT" Trade item line? I doubt it. What about Picorella's offer? I think three outfielders to include willie mays would suffice?

Does anyone agree?

They're obviously not going after Texeira, and probably not Sabathia. So is K-Rod the only FA they plan to go after this offseason? This team has too many holes.

I would love to know what the plan is or who is on their wish list.

Unless they can get Tex, they need to keep Delgado

They have to trade him. His value will only decrease as the year goes on, and then they'll be left with nothing when the season ends.

Friend of mine at work has a cousin that works for the Mets. Rumor that he's hearing is Eckstein may be signed to play 2nd base.

There's also talk of giving Gagne a shot.

No surprise that there are mullings about Ramirez as well.

Caesar,

Very interesting scoop!! Keep us posted.

Thanks

Once I find some undetectable steroids again, I'll be back to my old self. You just wait Davey Boy.

Gagne? C'mon. I hope the Mets can do better than that. He was terrible last year. 5.44 ERA? 1.468 WHIP? Definitely on the decline.

Just a quick run down of the free agent pool so far and I already see 3 upgrades to the pen that would help solidify our biggest problem. Bob Howry, Juan Cruz, and Brian Shouse. None of them are closers but they are all bullpen guys who wont break the bank but have great stuff. Leave Delgado alone. We finally get him healthy and productive and now you want to trade him. Listen while it would be nice to have Tex he is out of our price range but there will be guys that become free agents next year that can be his replacement or it may give time for a guy like Mike Carp to develop into a solid pro. We were a pen away from making the playoffs. This team is just fine. Maybe sign Eckstein as a bench player to add a lil spark but the rest is fine. Call me crazy but if Alou wants to play 1 more year don't you give him a chance to earn a bench role and bring him to spring training as a non-roster invitee. If he stays healthy in spring training let him start the year as a bench guy. If he gets hurt you cut him. Just a thought.

It makes a lot of sense to go out and spend tons of money on free agents. It has worked so well for the Yanks and Mets recently. There is no way a team who doesn't spend a ton of money on perennial all stars who are free agents could ever make it to or win a world series. Oh wait, that happened this year, and in many years past.

You need role players, grinders, and team first guys on a team. You don't need guys who only want to play for a ton of money. Don't start with the signing clutch players crap, because that title can change from year to year. You need guys on the team who go out and play hard everyday, even when things aren't going their way. That being said, Delgado is not one of those guys There is no reason to pay a ton of money for Texiera, Sabathia, or Francisco Rodriguez. Get some better scouts and find guys with a ton of upside, and a reliable guy in the back of the bullpen that may benefit from a change of scenery. Try to unload Delgado to an AL team needing a part-time 1B or DH, and get a bullpen guy and a back of the rotation starter.

Trade Delgado for one hard nosed Backman/Dykstra/Victorino-type player that plays hard. Someone that can so the Reyes' how to play hard.

Then trade Omar for a few of the young relief pitchers the Mets traded away- like that hard thrower on the Marlins (forget his name).

Can Omar,

Jose Reyes has been watching a hard nose player for the last several years, his good buddy David Wright, we don't need a Backman/Victorino character.

The hard thrower is Lindstrom, Marlins closer, a little too fond of bean ball pitching, don't need or want him back.
