Wagner re-evaluated; remains in limbo

Here is the updated medical information on Billy Wagner…

This doesn't sound like great news. The Mets just released this brief statement on Wagner's examination this morning:

Billy Wagner was re-evaluated today at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery. He continues to have swelling and pain in his elbow. He will need additional rest before he can resume throwing.

We'll see what Wagner has to say about this latest development when the clubhouse opens this afternoon. Looks like the Mets are going to need a contingency plan for the immediate future.

Mets are finished. this bullpen cant do anything

I don't know about being finished, it's not like Wagner and his 7 blown saves were lights out in the 9th to begin with. Plus are the rest of the bullpens in the NL really that great, I think every team has there concerns. Lets hope this Luis Ayala guy can contribute something to the pen.

What the Mets need to do is either move a starter to the pen, which I'm not really down with and call up Jon Niese. They could also bring up another guy like Brian Stokes from Triple-A and see what he's got to offer, I know Stokes has been up and down, but it's worth a shot. The last and least likely move would be to acquire a closer from another team that's out of contention, I'm not sure who would really be available at this stage.

Justin, you are funny. Sarcasm doesn't always show up well in print, but I got it.

The only guy who makes sense is Pelfrey. Throws hard, doesn't walk anyone anymore. Confidence at an all time high. Bring up Niese and let's go.

Pelfrey? Are you crazy? He's been our best starter for two months. No way. You would mess with his psyche so much he'd be unsaveable. Maine is the only starter who makes sense since he only goes 5 innings anyway and taxes the bullpen like nobody's business. I still don't love that idea either though. I would just bring up Kunz (again - he never should have been sent down) and say, "Here, you're the closer," and stop putzing around with this closer by committee nonsense which hasn't worked anywhere, ever. Ask the Red Sox. That's how Papelbon became a reliever because the bullpen by committee experiment was an unmitigated disaster. Give Kunz the job. (Oh, and as for closers from other teams a la Trevor Hoffman, nice thought --- but the Phillies would no doubt block any waiver claims on someone that is anything more than a B reliever, which is what Hoffman is right now --- a "B" level closer.)

Maine is definitely the guy that makes sense for the pen, not Pelfrey. Pelfrey has been one of the better starters for the Mets this year and we've been waiting for this. Also, Maine rarely gets past the 5th inning anymore because of his health and pitch counts by then. Plus, Maine is much better against lineups the first time he sees them in a game. If the Mets make the playoffs and Wagner is not back, I see Maine becoming the closer

Maine walks too many to be a closer.

What about Pedro??? I know it sounds crazy, but just a thought.

we're DOOMED!

The Mets bullpen has cost them valuable wins all season and will inevitably cost the team a shot at the playoffs. Even though Wagner struggled at times, he was lights out compared to who Manuel's been trotting out there in the ninth recently. I don't think Maine, Pedro or Pelfrey should be converted to relievers. They all have good stuff as starters and given Maine and Pedro's injury problems, why risk reinjuring them with a tough transition. Find someone down on the farm who you can hand the ball to and hope he becomes the next Papelbon or K-Rod.

Bring up Kunz and give him the ball in the ninth. He won't be any worse than the crap that has been going out there every night.

Yes, Pelfrey has been a very good starter, but neither Maine nor Martinez have the durability to close. Even with Pelfrey out, your starting 5 is Santana, Maine, Perez, Martinez, Niese. With the days off, you may be able to skip the 5th starter. With 40 games to go, we are giving up Pelfrey starting in 8 games in order to have him close in 15 to 20.

Kunz is simply not ready.

Give it to Kunz

OMAR is a moron....No relief, old players, injured players (should of researched Church head injuries since jr. high school,) Horrible contracts to Alou and Castillo, No clutch players, Highest paid team in NL. etc. etc. etc.

How can he not bolster this bullpen except with his 1-8 joke from the Nats.

OMAR MUST BE FIRED.....HE is horrible!

Warned you all Church was out for the year...Warned you all we had no relief....Warned you all no bench and no clutch players....Warned you all Delgado was on the way down.....

FIRE OMAR !! SCREAM IT LOUD !!!!

Stop your whining. Get some hits with men on base, build a lead and you won't have to worry about the pen.

Burgos will be here shortly to save the day Mets fans!!..don't panic!...the Bannister trade will finally pay off!!!!!

David-
In your last 2 chats, you mentioned the price for Delgado is essentially $8 million for next year because of the buyout. On Cots, I see he has a $16 million dollar option, with a buyout of $4 million.

So I see it as $12 million for next year. Am I missing something? Does it have something to do with the $4 million Florida is sending the Mets?

The raving weak kneed Met fans are at it agin. Dear Losers we are in first place and doing ok with sad sack bullpen, scrubs carrying the ball, weak hitting Delgado?? etc etc.Bring in the kid Kunz and alterrnate him with Heilman. Get Heilman to cut loose on the great fast ball and stop the other stuff except the off speed pitches and let her rip. With the competiton left on the schedule we can carry throughm Maybe change gears a bit versus Phillies and use Maine.Suck it up guys only 40 games or so to go.

Hey Conor ... the Marlins are picking up $4 mill of that tab.

Thanks David. I guess that makes it even more of a no brainer to bring him back.

Thanks. I guess that makes the decision to pick up the option even easier.
