Mets' tix less than Yanks

Here's a story about how ticket prices match up between Citi Field and the new Yankee Stadium.

But the bottom line is this: Tickets to see the Mets and Yankees next season are going to be more expensive. There's no getting around that. And nobody wants to spend more money for anything -- toilet paper, DVDs or baseball games. There's no sense arguing about it, however. It's not going to change. That's the reality of pro sports these days -- NFL, NBA, MLB (I'm guessing NHL games are still a relative bargain).

I noticed one Mets fan saying in a story today that he could understand the Yankees' charging more money because they've won 26 world championships. Here's Economics 101: teams will charge as much for tickets as they can get, for the most part. Neither team has had a problem selling tickets, whether it's the Yanks for $2,500 or the Mets for $495 for the same highest-priced seats.

I don't know what the answer is. Should it cost that much to see a baseball game? Probably not. But fans lost the fight against high ticket prices more than a decade ago. As much heat as the Giants got for the PSLs, their new building will sell out easily with an endless waiting list. Good for the Giants, not so great for Giants fans. Now NY baseball fans will be feeling the same way.

I'm not worried about the price as much as the availability. I saw the upper level of Citi will be $25 and less which is about what I pay for the Mezz Sunday Plan. The question is, while there be Sunday or Weekend Plans or any type of Partial Plans in Citi. Sounds like the Mets don't want to be bothered.

Jon ... I know there will be five-tier pricing levels (gold, value, etc.) and I'm pretty sure they will have partial plans as well.

David,
You are right by here is my problem, lets look at two other teams who are arguably better then the Mets and look at their prices in their new parks....

Cardinals Box Seats: Range $120 - $39
Good Terrace Seat $32
Cheapest Seat: $16

Phillies Box Seats: Range $50!!!-$24!!
Good Terrace Seat: $27.50
Cheapest Seats: $15

Mets Box Seats: Range $475 - $125
Good Terrace Seat: Not sure but probably way over priced.....
Cheapest Seat $20

In my opinion the Mets are taking total advantage of having a new ballpark and it is a downright shame that other teams prices (with the exception of the Red Sox and Yankees) with similar records/new ballparks charge much more affordable prices for the average fan. It seems like the Mets are charging fans prices that a constant World Series winner would expect to charge. What will happen is the novelty of playing in a new ballpark will eventually wear out and in 2 years when the Mets are drawing 20,000 people prices will come down. If I can go to a Cardinals or Phillies game and sit in great seats for $50, well I am going to laugh in the Mets faces when they tell me I need to pay $125 for a comparable seat. Feel free to disagree....

Washington and Kansas City are the two worst teams ever, and if Katie is moderating tonight, boycott.

Hey Mike ... You have every right to go to Philly or St. Louis and pay less money for good seats. That's being a consumer. But the fact of the matter is that the Mets -- or Yankees -- won't miss you. There are about 18.8 million people in the metropolitan area and these two teams are fortunate to draw from a huge fan base in a region of the country that has money to spend on baseball games. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. Just the way it is.

Last Labor Day my wife and I saw three Met games and 1 Phillies game at Turner Field, 9 rows back in right field by the foul pole, total cost for tickets $168. Saw the Mets in Phillie, poorer upper level seats at $15 each ( but better than most Mezzanines at Shea). So I suggest taking the wife on a road trip when you want to see the Mets and turn it into a mini vacation.
