Just a shout out to my colleague and good friend, Bob Klapisch, who suffered a serious eye injury last Thursday while pitching for his semi-pro baseball team in New Jersey. Klap is going to need another round of surgery to repair fractured bones around the socket, as well as damage to the eye itself, so we're keeping him in our prayers for a speedy recovery. Hang in there, buddy. (As for the accompanying artwork, anyone who knows Klap will make the connection -- it's an addiction of his).
As for the red-hot Mets, even the most optimistic fan -- and there were about three left a few months ago -- couldn't have predicted this turnaround by the All-Star break. More good news: it looks like Pedro Martinez's tight shoulder is not a major concern after all and he's expected to make his next start after the break in Cincinnati.
