Evans in the lineup

Jerry Manuel said he wants to give Nick Evans some more at-bats, so he's playing him in leftfield against Jamie Moyer.

My question: Why? Has Evans shown anything after his first game that makes you think he's a starting outfielder in the big leagues?

Brian Stokes is likely to start Saturday for Pedro Martinez.

Here's the lineup for the 12:10 start. It's not raining here at the moment.

Reyes SS
Evans LF
Wright 3B
Delgado 1B
Beltran CF
Tatis RF
Easley 2B
Castro C
Perez P

Usual suspects for the Phillies.

Evans had some decent AB's in Cincinnati.. Besides, against a lefty like Moyer, who do you want playing in the outfield with Beltran and Tatis... Chavez? Anderson?

Evans has actually swung the bat pretty well in his limited action since coming back. Besides, who else are you going to play? Endy? He's useless against lefties. At least Evans has some pop and might run into one.
Omar needs to get Manuel some better options out there quick.

Right David, because everyone has smashing success in their first 25-50 ABs other wise they are no good.

I will say he shouldn't be in the 2 spot. I'd rather Beltran hit there

It has nothing to do with being a starting outfielder. If he stays on the team, Evans is going to be used as a pinch-hitter. You need to get him some ABs to keep him sharp for that role. You can't keep the guy on the bench for weeks at a time and then expect him to get a hit at a critical moment.

This is something that Manuel has been better at than Randolph was. He's getting playing time for everyone. That's why folks like Tatis and Easley and Chavez and Castro and (today) Robinson Cancel are coming through when they need them.
