Now, maybe, Bobby Parnell for Ryan Zimmerman?

gothim.jpgI know Omar Minaya took a lot of abuse for trading Lastings Milledge to the Nationals this winter, but it's tough to knock the deal a few months later. Milledge just turned 23, so it's still very early in his development. But Minaya was more concerned with improving the Mets for 2008 and there's no question he did that by acquiring Ryan Church and Brian Schneider.

In fact, if that deal was just for Church straight up, it would be considered a good one for the Mets -- at least for the short-term. Milledge is nowhere near the defensive player that Church is -- maybe you didn't see this throw in yesterday's 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks -- and here's the offensive breakdown:

CHURCH:
28 G/.318 BA/5 2B/1 3B/4 HR/22 RBI/1 SB/11 BB/24 SO/.382 OBP/.491 SLG

L-MILLZ:
32 G/.263 BA/9 2B/0 3B/1 HR/11 RBI/3 SB/9 BB/22 SO/.331 OBP/.364 SLG

Of course, Church has benefited from the No. 2 spot between Jose Reyes and David Wright while Milledge, stuck on a bad Nats team, doesn't have that advantage, regardless of where he bats for Washington. Maybe this deal will have to be re-evaluated on a year-to-year basis, but for now, it's an easy win for Minaya. And given the fact that Milledge already has been benched for showing up late, he leads Church in headaches caused, 1-0.

I know it's already past lunchtime, but I'm on the West Coast, so the early blog posts have been a little delayed. My bad. Anyway, the Mets also were thrilled to finally have their projected OD lineup on the field yesterday in Arizona. It's cloudy this morning in LA, but I'm not exactly worried about a rainout tonight at Chavez Ravine. Check back later.

I agree with you, I loved the trade when he made it, I like it even more so far! Now I just think the Mets have to figure out what to do with Delgado...he was a great player who is now a liablilty.

Any new news on when Pedro is coming back? Considering he and Alou have basically been out the whole year and we are only .5 game behind the Phils I think we are in pretty good shape.

With Brian S back we can hit Delgado 7th or 8th. Or trade him to the Braves for a hot dog.

If Pedro faces hitters this week, as anticipated, I'd say he'd be three weeks away from that date. There's an outside chance he'll rejoin the Mets by the end of this month, but the first week of June might be a safer bet.

Omar's a genius, period.
