How's this for a memorable make-up game?

Just received this e-mail from Newsday reader Ryan Mulholland and I have to say I like the idea. Here's what Mr. Mulholland has in mind if tonight's Subway Series opener is rained out:

"Looking at the weather forecast for tonight, it looks like a pretty good chance the Mets and the Yanks won't be hooking up in the Bronx. Now, how will they reschedule this game if that happens? Will they do a day/night doubleheader Saturday or Sunday? Probably not, because I know in the past, they waited to do the split stadium doubleheaders on the 2nd Mets-Yanks series of the year. They've already done that twice in the past, so I've got a proposal for something they haven't done yet...nypd.jpg

"With the exception of this Monday, the only other common off day the Mets and Yankees this season is Thursday, September 11th. Now, what better way to honor those who left us that day seven years ago, than with the Mets and Yankees at Yankee Stadium, in the final season at Yankee Stadium, and the last game there between these 2 teams?

"It actually works out perfect for the Mets, who are home the day before, and home after, so no travel issue there. The Yanks are in LA in day before, but have a 12:35 start, so a 7:05 start at the stadium the next night could be feasible.

"So, with all the talks of how to close down Yankee Stadium (i.e.- Ranger-Islander game, etc...), I think this would be the best way to send it off. Likely, both teams will be fighting for their playoff lives at that point, so it might be cool to see them go at it late in the season for the first time, with the playoffs at stake.

"Alright, thanks for your time. Hopefully someone can mention this to the right person and maybe we can make this happen!!!"

Thanks for the e-mail, Ryan. And to take it one step further, how about having the proceeds from that game donated to Sept. 11 charities? Maybe I'm being a little naive, but It's already been seven years from that awful date and this would be a great way to honor and remember the victims of those attacks. Let's see what happens tonight.

That is a nice idea. At this point, though, I am just wondering if there is a way for both of these awful teams to lose all 3 games of the subway series.

This is a great idea. It would also be great to have a W.S. game played in the afternoon as well. Personally I would love to see this happen, but these two franchises care about $$$, not the city or well being of New York City. But then again, I'm sure the games are sold out, so either way they have our money, so why not?

AWESOME IDEA!

I too think it is a great idea. It would be good for the city, good for all of those personally affected by the awful tragedy of seven years ago, and I agree, a good way to say farewell to the old Yankee Stadium.

Have had a night to sleep on this idea, and it's a great one. Indeed, it rather captures the whole point of the original Mayor's Trophy Game: benefiting a worthy cause...

But there are legal issues involved. Like I think they need a day off or something in 21 games. There's some obscure rule that would make this unfeasable, and we all know Donald Furor would never allow it.
But it is an awesome idea.
It's also ridiculous that the Mets dont play at Shea that day every year.
