Pedro who?
Sorry. After the Mets' 13-0 annihilation of the Marlins last night, that headline was too easy. Plus, I'm a little groggy after the 5 a.m. wakeup call for the flight to Atlanta, so if you're looking for something more creative, wait a few hours. Speaking of Hot-lanta, it's actually quite chilly, overcast and windy with scattered showers.
Looking out the window of the Starbucks here in Buckhead, it's completely gray -- kind of what you've been living with for the past two months while the Mets have been in warm, sunny Florida. Again, sorry. Gratuitous shot. Apparently, I'm also cranky from lack of sleep.
But who cares about my mood. The Mets recovered nicely from the Pedro bombshell to leave Dolphin Stadium at a very respectable 2-1 as they head into this weekend's showdown with the Braves at Turner Field. Not a lot of tears shed for Pedro, either. Maybe the Mets are keeping his bottle of lotion in Martinez's absence for good luck. Knowing Pedro, he's going to want it back soon.
Struggling in April is so last year for David Wright, who looks like he wants to wrap up the MVP award by the All-Star break. I know it's only three games, but every ball Wright hit in spring training was a laser, whether it was caught or not. Be nice if he stays locked in for Chipper and Co. this weekend. I sense Tom Glavine could be in for some trouble when he faces his old pals in the Saturday FOX matinee.
Hold up. That must have been an imposter sitting next to me last night in the press box because this touching ode to Oliver Perez doesn't read like the Wally Matthews I know. Maybe all of your heartfelt e-mails are finally getting to him. By next Tuesday's Shea opener, he'll probably be wearing a Mets cap and a Santana jersey.
Anyhow, brace yourselves for the first Mets Insider of the 2008 season. Only in tomorrow's Newsday (and the web site, duh). Now it's raining even harder and my laptop battery is dying. Cool. This is turning out to be a splenderific Thursday. Enjoy.

I'm loving your blog, David.
It always seems like Omar does 98% of what he can to win us a ring. Like last year with not getting another starter or fixing the pen and this year if he had just signed a Kyle Lohse type instead of rolling the dice with Pelfrey and El Duque and we would have insurance for Pedro as well. And we still have no viable option to give J-Rey a rest. It's like we spend so much money and make so many moves that set us up, and then refuse to take care of the little things that could put us over the top.
I know I'm nit-picking and I sound like a damn Yankee fan here, but it's as if he wants to gamble on a few things each year so he can look like a genius if they work out.
David,
I noticed that Ken Davidoff suggested that the Mets should take a look at recently DFA pitcher Robinson Tejeda formerly of the Rangers. I think that was a great idea, Tejeda is still only 26, has both started and worked out of the pen. If Tejeda doesn't work out as a starter you could always add him to the pen and move Sosa to the rotation until Pedro comes back.
Any word on if the Mets are actually interested in this guy?
the fav 42, if it was so easy to just make a complete team every year, with all their holes filled, and it was just that easy, that all you had to do was go out and do it, don't you think it'd be pretty easy to win it all? pretty easy to have a great team every year? don't you think they'd do it? don't you think at least some team out there would do it? yeah, sure the Sox have won multiple titles (by staging 2 improbable comebacks, hardly in dominant fashion), but other then that, its pretty freaking hard to field a very good team every single year.
Yeah, I'm not saying that I understand contracts (with who can sign to minor league deals and whatnot); but it seems like we could have signed at least one guy to be in AAA for situations like this. I'm thinking of a Brian Lawrence type. Realistically, what does our pitching depth chart look like?
1. Santana
2. Pedro (out)
3. Maine
4. Perez
5. El Duque (out)
6. Pelfrey
7. ???
8. ???
Who are those 7/8 guys because we are going to need them soon?
No matter what, though, I still think we can win with even some random stiff with this offense. I'm just wondering who we have to plug into those starting spots now that Humber and Lawrence are gone. It seems also that Sosa's not going to be in the rotation. Is Vargas still around?
Yeah but some random stiff is what we used as a 5th starter down the stretch last season and if we could have won just a few of those games....goodbye epic collapse. You would think Omar would have over-insured us against such a scenario this year.
