Delgado's explanation of the curtain call snub

Carlos Delgado says he has only taken two curtain calls in his life, when he hit four in one game several years ago and after he hit his 400th career home run. He knew the fans were calling for one today, but he didn't feel it was the right spot.

I disagree, but whatever.

As for David Wright's involvement, I specifically asked Delgado if anyone encouraged him to go out for his curtain call. He got defensive and looked at me like I was crazy. I mentioned the give-and-take he had with Wright in the dugout, but Delgado said, "We were talking about pitch sequence in that at-bat," and then walked away.

Riiiiiiiiiigggghhhhhht.

this isn't a big deal. it will only be a big deal if beat writers keep harping on it. because now that the Mets are doing well, there won't be as many juicy stories to right. Let it die.

My thoughts exactly - the beat writers will make it a big deal - looking for anything negative to write about.

Why should he take a curtain call. We boo the guy every chance we get, and now that he hits two home runs, all of a sudden we love him. New York and Philly fans are awful...we boo our own guys when they're slumping instead of trying to give them encouragement.

Well we all know Delgado is full of it with that response but I also think that all the writers should let this one go.

I had a two people tell me Wright told him not to go out. That can't be true.

Carlos has every right to feel how he does. What if your editor, Mr.Lennon, yelled at you repeatedly for a month for every little thing, then out of the blue invited you out for a few beers after work? The media should imagine themselves in these guys' shoes before rushing to judgement.

Actually, Wright and Delgado looked like they were talking pitches b/c Delgado was pretending like he had a bat in his hand.

Hey NYMbaseball31 ... Mr. Lennon here. It was Mr. Baumbach filling in for me today on the blog. I didn't see the "CurtainGate" incident today, but I wouldn't blame Delgado if he was annoyed at the fans, and personally, I think the Mets have adopted an "us-against-them" mentality with their own fan base this year because of the behavior at Shea. If he's not in the mood to do a curtain call, I have no problem with it. Plus, the next time he strikes out with the bases loaded, he's going to be booed anyway, so what's the point.

Basically, i'm embarrassed to be a Mets fan, its sad that its come to this, but it has.

I am really beginning to get aggravated at all the people who say:

1) They are 'embarrassed' to be a Mets Fan;

2) That disagree with the Booing at Shea;

3) Are happy with sub-par performances.

If you consider yourselves in the first two categories and NOT in the last category, guess again! You are placing yourselves there by default!

It is our RIGHT to express ourselves in any way we see fit. If that means Booing when they are performing like amateurs SO BE IT! They do not have to like it! In fact that is what BOOing is FOR so they do NOT like it as we do NOT like it when they screw up at a gazillion dollars.

Santana gets almost 400,000 dollars a WEEK folks. He got booed for not looking the runner back to third while having a bad day on the mound. He was NOT Booed for having a bad day on the mound he was booed for missing an obvious fundamental play that even little leaguers understand. Period. End of story.

To NOT Boo is to co-sign their BS! That is NOT a Fan, that is an IDIOT.

As far as Delgado goes, he probably didn't want to take a bow because he knows his struggles are not over, at least he doesn't want to assume that because of one good day. I agree with that and I applaud him for being prudent. On the other hand, fans may not understand that either. Have to respect his decision whatever it may be and he doesn't have to give a reason.

Absolutely agree.

To change attitude towards Delgado from one game to another is not typical New York.
I am convinced Mets fans realize our season may just depend on how well Delgado does. We have to root for him, not against him. If he hits 2 HRs today, I am sure he will answer a curtain call if asked.
Delgado just wants to start hitting consistently and he knows he hasn't done that yet. One game doesn't proove anything.

Shame on Baumbach and the Newsday sports editors for deciding that this non-issue was the biggest story of the day.

here's one version of the conversation that happened...

"Mets won 2 of 3 from the Braves, Yankees won a pitching classic, Posada went on the DL and the Rangers are down 2-0. What story is least likely to be on the back page of our competitors? Let's make a big deal about a non-issue that might sell a few more papers..."

Unfortunately, Newsday is getting more Post-like even before Rupert buys the place...

Delgado is a tumor.

Uh, Johan got booed for giving up 3 HRs not "not looking the runner back to third." How many drunks in the upper reserved realized that he didn't look the runner back to third? You could probably count on one hand.

i wish everyone would stop generalizing met fans. yes there are a lot of moron fans in the crowd who boo at anything. there are also a lot of dopey drunks who do the same. i was at the santana game. there wasn't more than a couple of hundred people booing. what's that one percent of the crowd. i was also at the game sunday. while there was a lot of fans booing dalgado at first, it was still a minority of the 53,000 fans in the stadium. i hope carlos delgado realizes this. you don't hold a grudge against a whole group of people because some of them are idiots. don't kid yourself, thats why delgado didn't come out. that ovation went on for close to two minutes. he had plenty of time to think about what he was doing. please don't tell me about how he respects the game or he didn't want to show anyone up or that he didn't think it was important enough to celebrate. isn't this the same guy who turned his back on the american flag during the national anthem for his own political motives? how's that respecting the game? as for showing people up, what do you think he's doing when he does that ridiculous hand shake with reyes. which he did after each of his home runs on sunday. as for the moment not being important. i've been watching the mets get there asses whipped for the better part of the last twenty years by the braves. a good part of the time by john smoltz. this was a huge game for all met fans. didn't matter if it was april. if you don't want to give a curtain call to your fans, fine. but don't insult our intelligence. you might be able to fool a lot of the sports writers in this town. but your not fooling us. your fans.
