The Mets informed Ruben Gotay this morning that he is indeed on waivers and now must wait until later today or tomorrow to see if he is claimed.
Gotay was supposed to be on today's trip to Orlando, but with his duffel bag in front of him, he sat on his stool with tears in his eyes as he talked on his cell phone.
"I thought I did a good job last year," Gotay said. "I didn't think I deserved this. "

Dam that's just wrong, I really feel bad for this kid. I don't understand what the Mets are thinking with this move? I know Gotay doesn't play the greatest defense, but he's solid enough and he can flat out hit. Gotay has much more of an upside at 25 years old then some old retread like Brady Clark or Fernando Tatis. It seems the Mets sometimes like giving young players away like in the case of Brian Bannister, Heath Bell, Matt Lindstrom, Henry Owens and now Gotay.
If Gotay gets claimed by another team, then you have to add Jeff Keppinger to the list of young players the Mets just gave away.
Gotay got more than a fair look-see, but his defensive range is limited and he doesn't provide the same versatility as Tatis does for that final bench spot.
MY UNDERSTANDING IS THIS IS A #s MOVE, IN AS MUCH AS THA WAIVERS ARE REVOCABLE & SHOULD A TEAM CLAIM HIM, HE'LL BE PULLED BACK AND A TRADE FOR A NEED WILL BE ATTEMPTED. IN THAT CASE, IT CERTAINLY MAKES SENSE SINCE WE NEED STRONG RHH OFF BENCH. JKEPP WAS DEALT FOR GOTAY, SO PLS MAKE UP YR MINDS. JKEPP ISN'T MUCH MORE THAN SUPERFLOUOUS FOR CELLER DWELLERS, LET ALONE A CONTENDING TEAM.
This is so dumb. Seems like for every good move the Mets make they shoot themselves in the foot with another. :(
that is patently absurd. GM is too full of himself and over rated has-beens. this team needs to get younger, and Gotay can hit with anyone. use him to back up 1st if needed

No- He can't hit with anyone. He can't hit lefthanders and the Mets need someone who can do that right now. Its too bad cause I like Gotay- but how much future does he really have on this team?
Gotay did not deserve this... I'm sure the team could have comne up with a creative way to keep him in the fold... Say, a DL trip for that ankle...
This guy has pop and can show it off the bench sometimes... This is a bat they will sorely miss...

His decision are terrible. He doesn't know how to form or keep a roster. He is only good at giving players the most money for contracts and trading a lot of players for nothing.
If I am the O's, Pirates, Houston, Giants, maybe the A's I would pick him up. He is better then anyone they got for backups or possibly starters.
When Castillo is on the DL in June, and Valentin and Easley are in their rocking chairs, they'll be wishing they had Ruben in the starting lineup.
I, too, am sorry it has come to this. But the Mets need a right handed bat to balance their bench and Gotay, although a switch hitter, has not hit well from the right side. Once they decided to resign Castillo Gotay's chances were reduced, and when Alou when down with the hernia Gotay's fate was pretty much sealed.
I agree, though, that some team who picks Gotay up is going to get a very good player on the cheap. I would have liked to see him reach his potential in a Mets uniform. I doubt, though, that depth at 2B will be a big problem for the Mets this season, although it could become a problem in future seasons.
Sad. He's the only Mets HR I saw last year, here, against the Giants. Sweet shot over the right field wall. Oh well...

bad move...as someone already said, get rid of valentin, not gotay...he is a player....

Gotay did not really deserve to be cut, but there isn't a spot on the team for him either. With Marlon Anderson and Endy Chavez, the Mets bench is weighted toward the leftys.
Fernando Tatis or Brady Clark would be a better complement to Damion Easley from the right side than Gotay... if only he was a stronger right-handed batter.
GOTAY HAS GIVEN THE METS AN HONEST DAY'S EFFORT EVERY TIME OUT; HOWEVER THE AAA LEAGUE IS FULL OF GOTAYS. RUEBEN USED UP HIS LIVES EARLY ON WITH KC, OBVIOUSLY, METS WERE A POSTPONMENT OF THE OBVIOUS WHEN HE WAS SHIPPED HERE FOR JKEPP. KEPPINGER, SCUTTURO, DANNY GARCIA, ETC. ARE ALL IN SAME MOLD. SEEMS YOU WANT ALL THE PUPPIES IN THE PET SHOP. IF HE CAN'T GET THE WHOLE JOB DONE WHY USE ONE OF THE PRECIOUS 25 SLOTS? HE'S ONLY PROVEN HE CAN HANDLE RHP, 2B, 3B, SS.
