Beltran: Mets "team to beat"
Nope. You're not hallucinating. Carlos Beltran, perhaps the player least likely to make such a comment, did indeed call the Mets the team to beat in the National League East this afternoon. And all it took was a simple question about the difference Johan Santana will make for the Mets this season.
"Without Santana, we felt as a team we had a chance to win in our division," Beltran said. "With him, now I have no doubt we're going to win in the division. I have no doubt we have what it takes."
As for the kicker, the smiling Beltran added, "So this year, to Jimmy Rollins, we are the team to beat in the division."
Maybe that's great news for the Mets. After Rollins' bold proclamation at this time last year, not only did the Phillies win the NL East, he took MVP honors as well. The Mets should be so lucky with Beltran, but he doesn't seem to be lacking in confidence, either.
Asked later about the treatment he will now get in Philly, Beltran said, "I don't care. They boo me in Houston. One more park won't make a difference."

well its about time one of these players said what the fans feel and what we want to hear. That we are the best team in the east and we should win. I mean isn't that why they play to win. I know that's why we pay for them to win
All talk from a team that didnt do anything except blow a 7 game lead with 17 left to play. Nobody has to beat them..they beat themselves lol
