General manager Omar Minaya may be on his way to Israel, but that didn't stop him from making a deal before the flight attendant made him turn off his Treo. The Mets actually re-acquired Angel Pagan -- he was the team's fourth-round draft pick in 1999 -- and sent minor-leaguers Corey Coles and Ryan Meyers to the Cubs. Pagan played 71 games for the Cubs last season at all three outfield positions, but this appears to be a case of simply adding depth at Triple-A.

METS ACQUIRE OUTFIELDER ANGEL PAGAN FROM CUBS
The New York Mets announced today that they have acquired outfielder Angel Pagan from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers, outfielder Corey Coles and righthanded pitcher Ryan Meyers.
Pagan, 26, batted .264 (39-148) with 21 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 21 RBI, four stolen bases, 10 walks and 32 strikeouts last year for the Cubs.
“Angel is young, athletic and has the versatility to play all three outfield positions,” said Mets General Manager Omar Minaya.
The switch-hitter batted .289 (22-76) vs. lefthanded pitchers while all four of his home runs came against righthanded pitchers last season. He also had a .324 (12-37) batting average with runners in scoring position.
The 6-1, 180-pounder began the 2007 campaign with Iowa (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League before he was recalled by Chicago on May 10th. The 6-1, 180-pounder was placed on the 15-Day Disabled List on August 8th with Colitis and missed the rest of the season.
Angel hit .250 (29-116) with 18 runs scored, four doubles, three triples, three home runs, nine RBI, with six stolen bases, 10 walks and 20 strikeouts in 33 games with Iowa in 2007.
Pagan was originally drafted by New York in the fourth round of the 1999 June draft. He was traded to the Cubs for cash considerations on January 25, 2006.
He batted .247 (42-170) with 28 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, five home runs, 18 RBI, four stolen bases, 15 walks and 28 strikeouts in 77 games with Chicago in 2006.
Coles, 25, played with St. Lucie (A) of the Florida State League, Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League and New Orleans (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League last season. In 66 contests with the B-Mets, he batted .296 (81-274) with 36 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, one home run, 22 RBI, nine stolen bases with 24 walks and 44 strikeouts. The 6-1, 170-pounder also played in 23 games with St. Lucie, hitting .286 (24-84) with three doubles and eight RBI. Coles also hit .200 (6-30) in nine games with the Zephyrs.
Meyers, 22, went 1-4 with 13 saves and a 2.14 ERA in 33 games with Savannah (A) of the South Atlantic League last year. In 42.0 innings, he allowed 28 hits, 11 runs, 10 earned, with 14 walks and 48 strikeouts. In addition the 6-5, 195-pounder appeared in eight contests with St. Lucie in 2007 and posted a 5.59 ERA. In 9.2 innings, he yielded 16 hits, six runs, earned, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

In your opinion, do you think this spells the end for Carlos Gomez in Queens?
Hey Andrew ... I don't think so. The Mets need another minor-league OF after dumping Ben Johnson and this move doesn't necessarily affect the Gomez situation. Unless, of course, Minaya uses Gomez in a package for Santana, Blanton, etc.
Yeah, I was implying that Gomez gets shipped out for a pitcher. Pagan is a good switch hitter with great defense, so it seems like a Gomez with ML experience.
Thanks.
The trade for Angel Pagan is a curious move to me. According to Marty Nobel in his weekly Mets mail bag had asked top Mets officials who claims Pagan was brought in for added depth to the outfield. To me this can only mean that someone is going to be apart of a trade. A team does not add depth to it`s outfield, infield or pitching corps unless you are expecting to make a trade. Personally as the Mets are constructed today, they are very much a competitive over .500 winning percentage club, but no where near the Champion type club. I still say lets not mortgage our future for just one pitcher, and all the teams around the league are just trying to do that.. They must think they can fleece the Mets again like Tampa did in the Kasmir trade. I like Gomez alot, he is a keeper if you ask me. But Omar has got to do what is needed to bring a championship team back to Flushings. Would be a nice going out present for Shea Stadium.
