Winter Meetings Day 2 (mid-morning edition)

Anyone getting restless out there in Metsville? General manager Omar Minaya certainly did his best to lower expectations shortly after his arrival here yesterday afternoon. Seems like flake.jpegMinaya likes the way his team looks at the moment, even though I'm positive that Mets fans don't share that sentiment. Can this rotation win the NL East?

Pedro Martinez
John Maine
OIiver Perez
Orlando Hernandez
Mike Pelfrey

I guess it's possible, but do you really want to try? Expect some increased activity here on Day 2, but the Mets may need beyond this week to get something done. As for including Ryan Church in any deals, it seems that Minaya truly wants him in rightfield next season. Chatting with the GM in the lobby late last night, he sounded quite happy with Church. But when asked about a righthanded option off the bench, the name of Carlos Gomez never came up. Freudian slip? Could be. Stay tuned.

Even if Gomez isn't traded, it's possible the Mets would want him to play CF everyday in New Orleans, rather than be the 5th OF in New York. Ben Johnson or Damion Easley could end up platooning with Church if he can't handle lefties well enough.

Absolutely right, Judy. Barring a repeat of last season's OF injury list we should not see Gomez in the Majors until Sept.

Yup, it does Gomez absolutely no good sitting on the bench in NY waiting to start against the occasional lefty.

If he's not traded, he needs to be playing every day at AAA.

Oh, and to answer your question, David, that rotation has the Mets' pen burned out by July. Maybe August.

Keeping Church would be good thing. I think he'll do good job.

I agree with the rest. If Gomez isn't traded and isn't getting regular playing time with the Mets, it's wise to have him play full time in AAA. Unless the Mets plan on a 6-player bench, there's no room for him anyway. We already have Castro, Gotay, Easley, Chavez, Anderson.

Even if we don't get pitching upgrade via trade, Omar could go the Silva or Livan route and put the final spot up for grabs in spring training. El Duque is not a given.

if El Duque is back, I want him in the pen

and no Pelfrey

that means we need two starters at minimum

I'd be very happy with

Bedard
Pedro
Maine
Perez
+1

so I'd trade Pelfrey & Humber & Gotay & Church & Joe Smith for Bedard

THAT STARTING STAFF FROM 07 WILL NOT GET IT DONE IN 08???PEDRO & EL DUQUE WILL BREAK DOWN SOMETIME DURING THE LONG SEASON, SO THE METS NEED DESPERATELY TO SIGN A TOP ROTATION STARTER!!IF OMAR THE TENTMAKER IS WORTH HIS SALT, HE WILL FINE A WAY TO GET SANTANA OR HERON OR BLANTON OR ANOTHER PROVEN PITCHER, IF HE[MINAYA REALLY EXPECTS THE METS TO REACH THE PLAYOFFS IN 08???THEY EXPECT MAINE & PEREZ & THE BULLPEN TO PULL THE WAGON ALL SEASON LONG, THATS ASKING TOO MUCH!!! MANNY BAY SHORE NY
