Day 1 of the Winter Meetings (mid-afternoon edition)

omar.jpegWith general manager Omar Minaya scheduled to update the media today at 4:30 p.m., and a formal announcement of the Mets' participation in the Civil Rights Game to follow, here's what's being talked about in the lobby of the Opryland hotel to this point.

-- Last week's trade of Lastings Milledge to the Nationals for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider remains a hot topic. But despite the public outcry, not everyone sees it as a blunder by Minaya. One scout who covers the NL East regularly thought it was a "fair" trade for both clubs and believes the Mets are an improved team next year because of it. Really likes Church.

-- Not sure if the Mets are as desperate as some people think. One ESPN report suggested that A's GM Billy Beane would want Carlos Gomez AND Fernando Martinez in a package for Dan Haren. If that's the case, forget it. After trading Milledge last week, there's no way Minaya is sending his two best (and only) outfield prospects for one pitcher. Back in 2002, Minaya did raid the Expos' farm system for Bartolo Colon -- he sent Brandon Phillips, Grady Sizemore and Cliff Lee to the Indians -- but he can't be at that stage yet with the Mets. Not after missing the playoffs by one game last year.

-- I'm skeptical that Haren, Blanton or Bedard will be moved unless these prices come down. And there's little reason to think they will. None of them will be a free agent after next season, so there's no sense of urgency to move them. The A's and Orioles could just as easily wait until the All-Star break or next year at this time.

I hve a feeling that they will sign a wild-card in Colon and an inings eater in Livan (or Silva) since the price Haren, Bedard and Blanton are too high.

If that is true "Jon" tahn Omar should not be allowed on the company jet ride home...Fire him on the spot !!!

This team took a p.r nightmare last year. The fans are angry and embarrassed. The Mets must come out of this week with a Top tier pitcher. Anything else is a failure!

Colon? Silva ? Are you freaking kidding me. Ticket sales will plummet and the team will be a joke!

FIRE OMAR ~ FIRE RANDOLPH if things do not change immediately !

Ok Stead what's your proposal?

Who should the Mets offer up?

Here's the trade to be done. I don't want to hear about Jose. Troubled times require daring moves. Pitching wins titles, not pouting SS's.

Jose Reyes, Heilman, Humber or Pelfrey, and a lower level [AA-A] pitcher or outfielder. Move Gotey to SS or Eaisly. Or sign Eckstein. Handley Rameriz is available next year, so Gotey or Eaisly would be fine for a year. Castillo leads off, and the SS bats 2nd.

Dan, for who???? Santana?!

If so I'm on board!!!!!!!!
