Did a Google search this morning for an image of David Wells and this is one of the things that came up.I sense a little frustration among Mets fans over last night's 5-1 loss to the Padres and for good reason. When the pitcher, in this case Jorge Sosa, provides the only extra-base hit and only walk, that's a problem. Think about that. Manager Willie Randolph even said afterward that Sosa "had a good approach." Nice. This team just fired its hitting coach and Sosa outshines the entire lineup? Seems to me that HoJo has his hands full with this crew.
Here's something else to digest over lunch. Jose Valentin is really dragging this offense down with him. Valentin's batting average slipped to .236 last night and currently is in a 4-for-42 skid with 0 homers and 1 RBI over that span. The 2006 magic is gone with Valentin.

Let's just hope Jose Valentin does not get the 400 plate appearances necessary for his option to vest for 2008. I'm not sure if Ruben Gotay is the long-term answer, but he seems to be a much better option for now.
God only knows why Valentin was in there last night instead of Gotay and .......is Damien Easley on the DL? I haven't noticed him at all lately.
Well on Valentin, I think it is really selfish of him opting not to have surgery so he can try to get his option picked up. Think about it!
I think the problem with Valentin is the lineup. It's like a catch-22. Last year when guys were hitting they were on base. When they're on base the pitcher is preoccupied with the runners. This causes the pitcher to throw more fastballs to the hitters. This leads to more hits and more runs. And on and on. When is the last time the Mets scored multiple runs in different innings in the same game? Too many hitters are not hitting, hence the pitchers have no reason to throw any good pitches to the batters. It's a nasty never ending cycle. Just look at the Mets pitchers' batting averages. They get good pitches and don't stand there at the plate tring to get a walk. They SWING THE BATS!!!!! Maybe the hitters [Delgado, Beltran, Reyes, ect] should start swinging at some pitches that are grooved over the plate. Why do they always have to let easy down the pipe pitches go by for strikes? Pennants are won by scoring runs, not by walking to first or running up pitch counts. The best way to run up pitch counts is to score multiple runs in multiple innings.
