Pedro approaching final phase?
The Mets were thrilled to announce today that Pedro Martinez cruised through a three-inning simulated game in Port St. Lucie and will now take the next week to 10 days off before beginning what should be a rehab stint in the minors when he returns. Martinez threw 50 pitches, using his full repertoire of breaking stuff, and the Mets still are looking at early August for his return. As for the break, assistant GM John Ricco characterized it as a chance for Martinez to "recharge" after a strenuous ninth-month workout regimen.
"I think every time he's hit one of these milestones," Ricco said, "we start to get a little more excited."
Here's a tentative timetable for Martinez: If he returns a week from today, that would make his first rehab start July 12, and going by a typical spring training schedule, Martinez should be ready a month from that point -- approximately Aug. 12 vs. the Marlins at Shea.
That's a very rough estimate, but it's fun to speculate nonetheless.

Fun to speculate?
I don't know any person with any common sense who is actually expecting anything from Pedro Martinez this year. The people who talk about Pedro returning are quite frankly, people who don't know anything about baseball. Everyone knows that shoulder surgeries take at least one and a half years before the athlete regains stamina, strength, full velocity and breaks through all the scar tissue. Not to mention the atrophy and tenderness of the surrounding muscles.
Basically, I see Pedro making a start in 2007 and that might just be his career. It is hard to imagine him being a success.
I think it's time people stop name dropping Pete so that they sound important.
Pedro Martinez is not some kid who needs to prove anything. If he didn't feel he was strong enough to make a comeback, I don't think he'd do so; especially given what happened to his brother Ramon.
If Pedro comes back, I expect nothing less than what I ordinarily expect from him - utter dominance.
Utter dominance! HAR HAR.
Do you remember last year?
Let me recap:
Oh my toe! It won't heal!
Ouch my leg!! It don't steal.
Oh no oh no my other leg!!!
Oh my shoulder!! I'm really f*cked up. Ouch, it hurts.
Rest.............
OK I think I'm ok now, I'm better everyone...
WAIT!!!!! mY ROTATOR CUFF
and my legs!!!!
and my *ss!!!
OH MY!!!!oh NOOOOO!!
--So basically Pedro Martinez has turned into the clay action figure Mr Bill.
Mets have a .500 record in games started by Pedro Martinez in two seasons.
This is probably only going to get worse.
Pedro needed arm surgery and pitched through the pain, causing his leg problems due to compensation. I'm not sure how those problems are related to him now, after being fixed and claiming he feels better than he has in two years, when he was dominant. Wasn't he 4-0 in April last year before getting hurt, and a Cy YOung candidate the year before? I can only imagine you forgot the years before that, where he had the best ERA compared to the rest of the league over his career in the history of the sport. If he even comes halfway back he is the best pitcher on this team. It takes 12 months for TJ surgery pitchers to get their strength back. Shoulder surgery takes about 10 months. Pedro will be at 11 when he returns. They are taking it slow, even though he feels great. I look forward to seeing what he can do. I guess I'm happy I'm not a fatalist -- I'd probably throw myself off a bridge if I was so pessimistic like a couple of these posters.
Pedro for president
It takes a year and a half to completely regain form from rotator cuff surgery.
That is an estimate for young patients, not old fogies like Pedro.
Sorry.
Pedro will come back and pitch on 8/7..throw a no-hitter..and go undefeated
If nothing else, they need Pedro on the bench just to lift lift his teammates spirits lately.
River Alph? Can I get high with you.
Did you ever try a fish taco , they are good.
I BELIVE THAT PEDRO WHEN HE COMES BACK HE WILL BE BETTER THAN A 500,PITCHER,AND THE MOST INPORTAND PART HIS HE WILL BE ON OUR PLAYOFF ROSTER,IN WHUCH HE WILL HELP A LOT,AND INPROVE OUR YONG PITCHERS.
