Zog's Blog: What's Wrong With Wright?

Now that the Mets have solved the Oliver Perez mystery (for now!) how about trying to piece together the David Wright puzzle? The affable third baseman may have hit in the team's first 14 games before going hitless on Friday and Saturday, but he wasn't exactly stinging the ball. He went 0-for-4 on Saturday, with two strikeouts and is down to .290 for the season with 16 strikeouts in 62 at-bats. None of that would matter much if the production was there. Alas, Wright as no home runs and just four RBIs. Those are hardly the credentials for a No. 5 hitter, so manager Willie Randolph can't be second-guessed for trying Wright in the No. 2 slot on Saturday. It didn't end Wright's funk, but we'll probably see it again. This subject came up during spring training, when Randolph experimented with several players in the two hole. He indicated he'll likely continue to tinker there. Any problems with that?

The issue with Wright is that he is too pull happy and has been since that *!&@#$& All-Star HR Derby. When he was going good, he mainly went the other way with authority and seldom pulled the ball to left. He needs to go back to basics and do what got him here in the first place. Also, what the heck is the batting coach doing?!!? DW is not yet a seasoned vet and needs guidance. I'm sure if I could see that Wright needs to go the other way instead of trying to pull everything, he should be able to see it too.

I'm not worried about DW just yet. He hasn't looked good, and he may well be pressing with runners in scoring position (possibly a hangover of sorts from his non-performance in last year's playoffs). But with the lineup he has around him, he should be able to relax and find his groove. I'd note too that most players in the league would be thrilled to define a .290 average as a slump.

On the #2 hole, I have to say that I much prefer Beltran to Wright hitting there. Makes the top of the lineup much more dynamic, and better utilizes Beltran's speed.

Nice to see that Carlos has finally figured out how to hit at Shea. I think he hit .220 at home last season. If he really overcomes that, we're looking at a very serious MVP candidate this year.

somebody tell him to stop chewing gum. He didn't do it last year, that's what's causing the problems...lol

It doesn't matter where Wright hits, IMO. So far this season he is fouling off fastballs he would normally clobber and flailing at sliders breaking low and away for strike three. I don't know what concerns me more, the fact that he can't hit a fastball or that he's lost the good eye for the strike zone he's always had. The regression is alarming.

I think we just back off and lighten up on Wright, its early and just hasn't found the grove too much. He'll come around.

Since the Home Run contest last year, his power numbers have completely fallen off the table. (I didn’t like the idea of him participating) Didn’t he go into the All-Star break last year with about 20 HRs and finished with only 26? His hitting to right center has tailed off. He no longer drives the ball with power that way or protects the plate with confidence with 2 strikes, a facet of his game that has dropped off. He has become susceptible to the low & away pitch and as a result, his strikeouts are up too. He struck out 1 out 5 ABs last year and now it’s 1 out of 4 (before today's game). I think that he’s developed a bit of a hitch in his swing trying to pull the ball and is opening up his front shoulder too soon, and can't drive the ball. They need to get him going...Last half of last year and first 17 games this year? Rick Downs, get busy!

I've been worried about Wright since last year's NLCS, in which he did little. I'm praying he hasn't gotten the Edgardo Alfonzo Syndrome.
But yes, since the HR Derby, he hasn't been the same. And it's showing in his body language and it appears he's taking his at-bats out to the field with him.
I love the kid, but like Austin Powers, someone has stolen his mojo. Maybe a day off would help.

David hasn't been productive at the plate since the All=Star break in 2006. I doubt it was the home run contest. Fallacy of cause and effect. I think the pitchers have caught on to getting him out with breaking pitches away and fastballs up. He seems to 0-2 every at bat.

What's wrong with David Wright, too much trim.

There is certainly something wrong with his swing lately and I think that Willie should drop him a position or two in the lineup until he snaps out of it. Right now, Moises should be #5......and I love David as a player but some things are obvious.

David Wright is,
what David Wright is....
a "streaky hitter" 'nuff said.
He reminds me a lot of
Jeff Kent.
Jeff Kent has been a great hitter for ten years, an MVP and a future first ballot HFM.
But anyone who has followed Jeff over the years (including his Met days) will tell you he is streaky.
Last year in the first half,
David Wright was getting MVP talk.
In fact he was the toast of Queens....nobody even mentioned Reyes, Delgado, or even Beltran.
But alas in the second half his hot streaks were less frequent.
Final analysis says, David will heat up and tear the cover off the ball...and then go through another relatively quiet spell for 70 at bats.
