Unbreakable

unbreakable.jpgA couple observations now that the Mets are 2-0 for the first time since 1994:

As far as I could tell, the Mets dugout was relatively empty during the Cardinals' ring ceremony on Tuesday night, just like most of the seats at Busch Stadium by the eighth inning. To me, that was astonishing. The Cardinals -- the defending world champions -- trailed by only three runs and Albert Pujols was headed to the plate for at least one more at-bat. Oh, and there's this: It's the second game of the season! You've suffered through five months of ice storms and bitter cold, and it's not worth sticking around for two more innings. Crazy.

It goes without saying, but tremendous job by Aaron Heilman for the second straight game. OK, so maybe he was more than a little lucky when Jose Valentin made that driving grab of Scott Rolen's hot smash to save him on Opening Night. But getting Albert Pujols, the tying run at the plate, on a soft fly ball to centerfield was huge. A very positive sign after his bout of elbow tendinitis this spring.

Three more double plays? Seven in two games? It's not going to stay that easy for the pitching staff, but what a way to start from a defensive standpoint.

Of course, there's also El Duque. But can this great pitching continue?

As for '94, we all know what happened that year. A strike ruined the season, but for the record, the Mets went 55-58 to finish in third place, 18.5 games out. The highlight? The Mets led the majors and set a club record by getting hit by pitches 52 times -- in only 113 games. Wonder why teams found them so annoying that season.

David, I appreciate you comic brilliance more than anyone, you must know this as true. But seeing as how the season is freshly upon us: How about some more gameday photos or NY Met photos? I think it would improve the blog along with your street credibility in Queens. You can never have enough street credibilty especially when dealing with us Met fans.

Enjoy!

Thanks Shea!

But we also want some more Anna Benson pictorials...

Couldn't find it on Newsday, but ...

Shea...you are two for two.

How about David Lennon's High School photo.

I am so sick of the media rambling on about the Milwaukee Brewers, they apparently are the "cinderfella" pick out of the National League this year. Everybody is yapping about them taking away the media time away from the Mets. I can't believe this, the Brewers stink. I am also hearing that Ben Sheets is the CY Young award winner this year. The guy can't even go .500. And I guess he wins 20, right???
I am sorry but it is a long time removed from Olympic glory from Mr. Sheets. Brew Crew will finish in 3rd place.

How about just out of high school? ;-)

OK. How about a photo from Shawn Green's Bris Ceremony. That might have been the last time Green was associated with a deep cut that made significant contact...

You win ...

Ha, Mazeltov! Mets are on fire. First sweep of the year to remind old foes that the Mets are for real.
Maine is amazing. Carlos Beltran is the absolute star of this franchise. It was nice for the Cardinals to at least dress for the games. But there are no points for tailoring and attendence. Take out the brooms and lets make it four, friends. Lets Go Mets!

They already swept! Next game is Friday in Atlanta.

Let's hope they can keep this up. It was great to see Maine pick up where he left off. I'm feeling better and better about this season!

My boyz did well.....lets go for 161 more!!!!!

2 runs allowed in 27 innings against the world chumps..nice

Hi All!

Wish you were here.

Having a great time!

Dont forget to write,

Wake me up when we are 162-0
Love,
Mr. Met

Mets are playing with intensity and with a real and intense passion. They are like a big blue and orange machine. It reminds me of the '86 team.....
minus the coke,
the arrests,
the childish pranks,
the in-fighting,
the mustaches,
the Kevin Mitchell wardrobes,
and the trashed Airline flights.
Oh, those were the good days....

Mr. Met: Where are you? The Bahamas?
Who's going to toss novelty t-shirts into the crowd at Shea Stadium on opening day?
What about the kids?

I have heard people compare John Maine to Ron Darling. Ron Darling was an unkown who was brought over in the Lee Mazzilli deal along with Walt Terrell. Now on this team John Maine contributes in his first two years with the Mets. And in fact he may be the number two starter, like Ron Darling became.
