What's a Hum dinger?

howardhesseman.jpgJust as Mike Pelfrey took a step towards making the Mets rotation on Thursday, Phil Humber took a step away from serious consideration on Friday. Humber, pitching in relief of John Maine in the Mets’ 9-5 loss to the Tigers at Tradition Field, allowed three runs on two hits and two walks in two innings. He has a spring training ERA of 24.00 in two outings.
“He’s young and he has a tendency to overthrow sometimes,” manager Willie Randolph said. “Missed his location, obviously. That’s what happens with young players. He has a great arm and a great future, but he was just overthrowing the ball a little bit today. He settled in the second inning out, threw some good curveballs, which probably got him back into sync a little bit.”
Humber allowed a two-run home run to Michael (I'm Not Howard) Hessman. Every time Humber gives up a home run, we can call it a Hum dinger.
Good news for the Mets is Maine threw three scoreless innings. With three weeks to go, the rotation for now looks like:
Glavine
El Duque
Maine
Perez
Pelfrey
But at lot can change between now and Opening Day. What do you think? Who makes it and who doesn’t?
And how many of you remember Howard Hesseman? Hint: The show he's best known for featured an appearance by then-Cincinnati Reds manager Sparky Anderson.

Ha, I used to work with Dr. Johnny Fever

ah...WKRP in Cincinatti...

Didn't Bosom Buddies come on right after?

HH's been around a long time, but that's obviously "WKRP Cincinnati" you're goosing us for.

If El Duque doesn't shape up and come around in time, I wouldn't be surprised if the rotation was Glavine, Maine, Park, Perez and Pelfrey. Humber's headed for N'Orleans, and lots of good eatin'.

I kind of disagree with geezer. The Mets aren't paying El Duque $12MM over two years to work out of the pen. He will get the ball every fifth day unless he's hurt or tired.

I think Perez needs to pick it up. If Park can continue to pitch like he did in his second and third innings instead of his first, he could crack the rotation in Perez's place. So I've got Glavine, Hernandez, and Maine as locks. Park, Pelfrey, and Perez will fill out the 4 and 5 slots.

Geezer's rotation is a good one, methinks, with the possibility of El Duque replacing Perez; am not convinced the latter isn't a ticking time bomb every time he pitches.

What happened to Aaron Sele and will Chan Ho Park make it to the Park?

I see:
First Half - Glavine, El Duque, Maine, Pelfry, Park

Second Half:
Pedro, Glavine, Pelfry, Maine, Park

Think maybe El D runs out of steam
