Just watched Pedro Martinez cruise through another one of his throwing sessions with his personal trainer Chris Correnti. I know the Mets are predicting an early August return for Pedro, but I'm betting it's going to be earlier than that. Martinez is zipping his throws with surprising ease, popping Correnti's glove from about 75 feet away, and judging from his demeanor, he could not be feeling much better. He even playfully snapped off a couple of soft curve balls when Correnti closed in to about 12 feet.
Martinez smiled when it was suggested that he was showing off for a visiting reporter from Boston, but there's no denying that he's making steady progress.

One thing i have learned is that there is almost always setbacks with injuries.
I remember Mike Cameron when he was coming back in 2005 after his hand injury the end of '04 season. After his offseason surgery everyone said he would not be ready until May of '05. Everyone was quite pleased when he showed up for camp in Feb and was playing in exhibition games all through March. By the end of the exhibition season he was on the DL with tendinitis in the tissue surrounding the injury and sure enough he did not play a game that counted until May.
I think that these setbacks with tendinitis and other aches and pains are expected and even if Pedro is throwing with some velocity a little earlier than expected, they also expect setbacks along the way.
Until he shows up on the mound in a few games and is somewhat effective then I will consider him healed.
C'mon let's deal with some reality. The Mets just don't have the pitching to think they'll ever go wire to wire like 2006 and run away with the NL East Division. They had better come out of the gate real fast this year or they will find themselves behind the eight ball for most of the season with the horrible pitching they now have. It's the end result of Minaya sitting on his hands for most of the winter.
Hold the presses everyone, we finally have an answer to our bullpen woes. Joe Hietpas is being converted to a pitcher from a catcher!! What a shame, and I really think that is a BIG big mistake....Joe was always such a solid hitter, a master with the bat! He was the best hitter ever! I only hope that good ol' Joe Joe can get that knuckleball "fluttering" in time to help us this year. Forget about Jason Vargas down in AAA. We got Joe Hietpas!!
