The Zito conundrum

Looks like the Mets officially put themselves in the race for Barry Zito last night when GM Omar Minaya met with Zito's agent, Scott Boras. With the Rangers apparently willing to go to six years and $102 million for the free-agent lefthander, should Minaya play into Boras' hands and get into a bidding war? Is it that crucial for the Mets to land Zito? Or would it be better to pull off a trade for one of the White Sox starters -- Freddy Garcia or Javier Vazquez -- at the cost of Mike Pelfrey or Philip Humber?

Just something to ponder on the morning of Day 2 here at the winter meetings ...

Are you kidding me, "Pelfrey or Humber for Vasquez"?

Lifetime he's a sub .500 pitcher with a high era.

What was he last year 11-12? That sounds about what could be expected. ERA in 4.40 range?

Sounds like another KASMIR trade!

Omar should offer a $75M deal over 5 years. This should be the ONLY offer. Tell Scott Boras and Barry Zito, "here it is." If you want New York and the Mets, this is the offer. No need to get into a bidding war with Texas or any other team. Take it or leave it. Barry is the best available free agent pitcher, but not truly a Number One.

do not get zito!!
you guys dont need him
your rotation is good
martinez
glavine
el douque
maine
zambrano
you dont need to waist your money on a guy like zito, i mean if it was carpenter, willis, or santana then its worth the money but zito knows hes not worth that much, hes worth half of that and shouldnt be aquierd by us. get suppon to replace zambrano hes actually worth what he wants.

If we trade PELFREY, it should be for C.C SABATHIA. He goes 8 innings plus A LOT. Real throw back who should be in NY. Lefty, too.Gives relief to bullpen, its what Mets need.

Zito won't be worth the money. Develop the young starters, one of them will come up faster than you expect - happens all the time.

Signing Zito for $20 million would make it even harder to enjoy the triumphs of our team. If we won, it would be because we can pay too much for an above-average player without risking anything real. I've written something longer about this on my blog, if anyone's interested.

Keep Humber and Pelfrey. Vaz

Offer Zito 80 million for 5 years and an option year for 16 million, that would kick in based on plate appearances, etc. That way everyone wins.

Of course Zito's not on the A's board anymore. He's a free agent.
Also ...........
All this BS talk about Zito having to make a tough decision on whether to go after the money (with the Rangers) or whether to go with to a playoff team (like the Mets.)
Boy, what a joke that is ...... but it won't be so funny if we lose Zito. I'm almost embarrassed to say I'm a Mets fan.

We finally get in the playoffs last year and this year a lot of us are walking around and talking like we won 10 World Series ...., or like we're the NY Yankees.
We haven't proved spit so far. The last time we proved anything was in 1986, and that's 20 years ago.

The way I see it, Zito is simply wanting his free market value, that's all. Whatever that is ..... then .... that's what it is.
It's the Mets who are the money hungry ones because they're trying to 'nickle & dime' Zito

The Mets organization, which includes their TV Network and a bunch of other things, will make over Seven Billion Dollars in the next 7 years starting in 2007. Yeah, that's right .......... SEVEN THOUSAND MILLION is what that comes out to.
Even if their total expense to run everything comes out to Two Billion, (which really means ..... Two Thousand Million Dollars), they have tons of money to sign a bunch of Zito's.
It's the Mets who are playing the money card and are the greedy ones.

I think they're stupid to lose a player of this caliber for the next seven years, merely because they want don't want to part with it. ........ because the truth is .... they have more than enough to sign him for the next 7 years and it won't even put a dent in the bank account.
I'm here on the west coast and I've seen Zito pitch in a lot of games because I take my clients to Angel & Dodger games plus Giants and A's games when I'm up north and I saw what this guy does for several years.

If you take a 'ratio' of what Zito's salary over seven years would come out to compared to what the Mets Organization will make over the next seven years .... you'll see that Zito's salary comes dowm to a 'ratio amount' of around One Hundred Twenty ($120.) Dollars (Zito's ratio salary) to the Mets (after expenses) comes down to Five Thousand ($5,000.) Dollars of debt free spendable money.

Breaking it down further, it's like having $5000.SPENDABLE Dollars in you pocket and then you have to spend only $120. of those Dollars to upgrade and enhance your business product for the next SEVEN YEARS ....,, and ........... just keep that in mind that the Mets can well afford to spend those (after all expenses) dollars.

And so ............ whether Zito goes to the Mets or not, is not a decision that Zito has to make, it's a decision that the Mets have to make. Are they ready to spend what they can well afford to spend to get this guy, or should they lose hiim for 7 years because they want more zeros in the portfolio? That's really the big question.

Zito is ready to sign with the team that will pay him his fair & reasonable market value. That's all ..... nothing more.

Why the hell should he take less if he's worth more and can get more. Why?. ... Because it's the Mets? So what!!!!

If the Mets don't want to lose him for the next 7 years, it's them that has to do the doing ......... not Zito ..., cause he's gonna get his money whether it's with the Mets or somebody else ......... and why shouldn't he ..., he's a great pitcher who played with shitty offense for the last 6-1/2 years.
If he was on a team with offense, his win-loss record woutd go thru the roof.

When I talk to my Mets buddies about Zito they all get real surprised to find out what this guy has done.
Remember in the last 5 years, he's been an All-Star 3 times out of the 5, and on top of that he won a Cy Young ..... who the hell did that in the last 5 years ......

I saw some stats in the LA TImes the other day that I almost didn't believe ........ which was ......... that Zito's winning percentage is 95.5% when he gets at least 4 runs of support. Holy shilt, I hope it's true cause I couldn't believe it

In the same article it said that last year, 2006, he was 15-0 in games where he got at least 4 runs ... and it said he was 16-0 last year when he got 3 runs to work with.
And in a November USA story it said that in his career if he got at least 2 (measly) runs of support, his record in those games would be 100 wins 21 losses. that sounds impossible but if that stuff is in USA Today and the LA times it must be true and they sure must have something to back that up.

And so .......... if the Mets think Zito can help them for the next 7 years, then they have to pay market price.

If they don't think Zito can help them, then they should move on and stop trying to buy a Lambroghini with Chevrolet money, which is what they keep telling the world that that's all they got in their pocket. What BS is that.

That's what I think.
