A Salute to Citi Field

citi field.jpg

Now that I'm finally over my jet lag from Japan, it's time to get back to what's going on with the Mets stateside.

Let's start with the new stadium, or as it's now called, Citi Field. I was at Monday's groundbreaking and have to admit I'm a big fan of the ballpark currently under construction. As for those upset by the Wilpons selling the naming rights -- $20 million annually over 20 years -- I have this mesage: Get real.

That's the way the business of building stadiums is done in the 21st century, and give the Wilpons credit for shouldering a large share of the financial burden themselves. They also did the right thing by naming the entry rotunda for Jackie Robinson, as well as planning for a statue and museum dedicated to the Dodgers pioneer.

And the bottom line is this: The sooner Shea is knocked down, the better. Nostalgia be damned, the Mets play in the worst stadium in the major leagues.

This japanese pitcher may be a decent pitcher though i have reasons to believe the pitching in japan is somewhat diffrent than here in the u.s. and my opinion is the whole idea of him coming to the u.s. is over rated and a business generated matter and i feel the mets can possibly gain better ground by seeking out pitching among the free agency market and use other finances to upgrade the outfied situation and maybe second base.Regardless, as a mets fan, i have total confidence in omar minayas decisions in inproving the mets team.

Get Real ?!?

Reality is that the wilpons got all the money and now the little guy is left even further out in the cold.
>> 12,000 less seats ! (As Jeff Wilpon put it - "to drive demand") There will be no affordable seats at citi field - (oh mabye a game or two in early april).
This is what is wrong with baseball. At least we've got the ducks.

Re: Get Real from Mike.

Why does it matter that the Mets have 12,000 less seats? They had at least that many empty seats at 90% of their games last year, not counting the playoffs. Seats will be affordable, as teams make the majority of their money selling the corporate boxes not single tickets and this stadium gives them more boxes to sell in a more desireable stadium.

really could it possibly be THE WORST.... i don't think so

Sorry the worst stadium in the league would easily be Dolphins Stadium where the Marlins play. Its a horribly dismal destination and the concession stands generally work on a skeleton crew. Shea is MUCH better. That said, Citi Field is a lot better than it could have been, at least it sounds cool for a NY team as opposed to something like "US Cellular field" and so on.

Jason: Read between the lines. David Lennon covers the Mets because that is his assignment. If you read his stuff it is obvious that he is not a Met fan. He will dog on Shea Stadium because he has no warm memories of the arena. He has warm Yankee memories. But alas, there are many bad stadiums.
Dolphin Stadium?
The New Comiskey Park?( or whatever they call it now)
Fenway Park ? (THATS RIGHT FOLKS, ORDER A HOT DOG AND 15 PEOPLE TOUCH IT BEFORE IT GETS TO YOUR HANDS AT YOUR SEAT )
And of course, Yankee Stadium?.....sit in the bleachers or upper deck and you will see some really idiotic things. Isles are small, seats close together and no security anywhere to be found. Lovely.

r u kidding, fans in Tampa and Minnesota will beg to differ about who plays in the worst stadium in the majors. Tropicana Field and the Metrodome r maybe two of the most dismal places on earth
