METS ACQUIRE RHP ROBERTO HERNANDEZ & LHP OLIVER PEREZ
The New York Mets today acquired righthanded pitcher Roberto Hernandez and lefthanded pitcher Oliver Perez from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for outfielder Xavier Nady.
Perez, 24, was 2-10 with a 6.63 ERA in 15 starts for the Pirates. In 76.0 innings, he yielded 88 hits, 64 runs, 56 earned, with 51 walks and 61 strikeouts. In addition, the 6-3, 210-pounder started six games for Indianapolis (AAA) of the International League after he was optioned to the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate on June 29th.
Oliver was 1-3 with a 5.63 ERA in those six starts at Indianapolis. In 32.0 innings, he surrendered 28 hits, 21 runs, 20 earned, with 11 walks and 34 strikeouts.
Perez constructed a 7-5 mark with a 5.85 ERA in 20 starts in 2005 with the Pirates. In 103.0 innings, he permitted 102 hits, 68 runs, 67 earned, with 70 walks and 97 strikeouts.
He won a career-high 12 games and finished sixth in the NL in ERA (2.98) and was fourth with 239 strikeouts in 196.0 innings in 2004.
Oliver has recorded 632 strikeouts in 591.2 career innings. He is 29-40 in six seasons with a 4.56 ERA in 105 games, 104 starts with the Padres and Pirates.
Hernandez, 41, was 0-3, with two saves and a 2.93 ERA in 46 games with the Pirates. In 43.0 innings, he’s allowed 46 hits, 24 runs, 14 earned, with 24 walks and 33 strikeouts.
He is 10th on the All-Time Save List with 326.

So I guess this means that Omar no longer thinks Nady is one of the cornerstones of this franchise along with Wright, Reyes and Beltran?
nady was never a cornerstone; that was just offseason drivel.
this does mean that lastings is a potential cornerstone though.
and that is flat out fantastic.
Agreed. Nady looked like a guy that was going to put up numbers like .265-20HR-70RBI at his best. You could probably get numbers like that out of Milledge BEFORE he gets really good.
I'm fine with the deal.. I am just sorry that Sanchez had to have this injury.. thank god it is not that serious and only lost him for the season.. Any time you hear car accident there is a hug course for concern..
Sanchez get better and come abck for us next year!!
Devestating about Sanchez.
I liked Nady, and I don't think Milledge is ready yet. He needed more at bats since pitchers learned how to pitch to him pretty quickly.
I didn't want to trade Lastings, but I would have hoped to get more for Nady.

It would have been nice to get more for Nady, but with the 4PM deadline looming, they had to jump on the best deal they could get. It's not that bad; they get relief pitching and a possible 4-5 starter, and don't give up a huge cog in their offense. The Mets will STILL score runs, without Nady.
Mr Met I think you downplay Oliver Perez. To me he can't be a 4-5 starter. He is either a number 1-2 or he's a bust. This guy has electric stuff but has some mechanical and mental flaws. The thing is most Lefty's take longer to mature but you can't teach a 94-97 mph fastball. Met fans were so upset about losing Kazmir but this kid is bigger and stronger and has more upside. It's time for Peterson to earn his money and live up to his reputation and fix this guy. If he does this will be the biggest heist in major league history. One more tidbit for everyone. The Mets offered Milledge for this kid last year and were turned down. One year later we got him for Nady.
Thank you, Duaner Sanchez. I hope that you have received the "pick-me-up" bouque that I sent you. We are moving on now sadly and devoting all of our energies
to Roberto Hernandez and Heilman. Next time, don't make conversation with the cab driver while he is driving.
Anything we get from lefty Oliver "Prime Orbit" Perez is gravy, the Mets were lucky to get Roberto Hernandez during the "last minute" when EVERYONE is searching for bullpen help and desperate. It is sad to see how the CHEAPA$$ Pirates always dump payroll. It is an embarrasment (THEY JUST HAD THE ALL-STAR GAME!!)Perez may not take 15 MINUTES to fix (YIKES) but he'll be a skinny Sid Fernandez with JU JU on the fastball.
"thank god it is not that serious and only lost him for the season.. "
This is why there's a Preview. idiot
Wow, if you go on "Talk Back" and read all the posts, you would think the Mets traded the second-coming of Willie Mays. I could have sworn Xavier Nady was hitting only .265 and was a sucker for a two-strike slider down and away. Xavier Nady was a nice player, but he wasn't this superstar stud outfielder like everyone makes him out to be.....
Mr. Met: You are right on target as usual and I completely agree with your comments here and also on 'Talk Back'. Xavier Nady was in fact having a "career year". That is a statistical truth, they can look it up. My only concern is that the career year is not being seen to fruition with the Mets, his interaction and friendships will leave a void. Simple fact is without Roberto Hernandez ------Mets do not win the NLCS. In fact I believe the Mets are not done dealing.
Questions--Questions--Questions:If Perez has so much upside then why did we try to trade him and Bell for Scott Linebrink??? If Hernandez is so valuable why didn't we re-sign him???Is Carlos Gomez, seven months younger than Milledge, the next Met super star???Will Milledge, hitting 239 since his demotion, act like a major-leaguer this time around???
You could also say if Perez sucked why would the Padres even consider trading their best arm for him. I'm just glad we kept him.
Ken "everyone" wanted Linebrink but the Padres are not stupid, he is a future closer. Give Omar credit --IF in fact he tried to make that deal. Be glad we have Roberto Hernandez ...would you rather have had Gary Majewski, or Guardado, or Lohse from the minor league refuge pile? Or how about Mike Stanton? How about Chacon and his 7.00 ERA? How about Cory Lidle anyone? Odalis Perez (who's cornball agent still INSISTS he is having mystery "negotiations" with Omar Minaya)or Kippy Wells and his blood clots? A lot of crap in there. The only one I would consider would be Guardado, and I consider him an "armando benitez" type. Lots of crap, lots of broken hearts.
RE:Perez--Mets made the offer and the Padres turned them down....RE:Hernandez--He did a good job for the Mets.My point was that if they re-signed him they would of still had Nady. In any event, given the state of the Mets pitching staff, Cory LIdle wouldn't be a bad addition.
Ken: Cory Lidle? Mets already have him and his name is El Duque. THEY BOTH SUCK. Also Roberto Hernandez LEFT for a little more money and the opportunity to "close" with ANOTHER team. He would not GET that chance with the Mets (Billy Wagner signing). Remember, he left.
Hernandez was the Mets most trusted reliever last season and left not because he wanted to be a closer but for double what the Mets offered which amounted to 2.75 million. As for Lidle and Cory they are pitching a lot better then Glavine and Trachsel.
I meant Lidle and ElDuque.
Not throwing Glavine and Trachsel under the bus but what I stated is fact. Over the last two months-10 starts: GLAVINE 5.37 ERA-79 HITS-55.1 Innings---TRACHSEL 5.17 ERA-65 HITS-55.2INNINGS---EL DUQUE 4.08 ERA-52 HITS-57.1INNINGS---LIDLE 4.62 ERA-61 HITS-62.1INNINGS. GLAVINE,who has lost more then he's won since becoming a Met has worn down. TRACHSEL has been lucky not good. Also, lets be accurate. HERNANDEZ signed not for a little more money but double what the Mets offered. He had as many save opps. as HEILMAN so if you want to call him the Pirates closer go ahead but I believe they signed DAMASO MARTE for that role.
Ken you made some good points. Lets hope over the next two months Glavine finds his second wind and the rest of the staff have something left in the tank.
Not to many games on the line in Pittsburg.
Word is that Pelfrey has been sent down and Royce Ring has been called up.
What's the fascination with Aaron Heilman? Seems more like a typical Mets hype job than anything else...
