Closing Time

Billy Wagner became the 20th pitcher and third lefthander to reach 300 saves on Tuesday. The other two lefthanders were former Mets John Franco (424) and Randy Myers (347).
Which leads us to today's quiz. Obviously, Wagner hasn't been around here long enough, but who do you think the Mets' best closer ever was? Franco? Myers? Jesse Orosco? Tug McGraw? Armando Benitez? Tell us what you think.

Ron Taylor (Dr Ron Taylor) didnt have the press of the others, but he got the job done. As did McGraw, Orosco in that order.
Its early, but Wagner appears to rate ahead of Franco for his potential...but he still makes u think of Franco with the signs of wildness. His fastball is lively as are his appearances...but he got the job done today adn thats what counts!

Despite Armando blowing leads in memorable/key spots, his overall effectiveness cannot be ignored.

Jesse Orosco was very good. Myers didn't stick around long enough and I missed the Tug days.

Based on his performance over ten productive seasons, John Franco is my vote for best Mets closer.

Henry you bring up a good point about Armando Benitez. I like to think of him as sort of like the 2006 A-Rod: Good numbers, but never came up big when it counted. Benitez's numbers would always be good at the end of the year, with 30-40 saves, but when it counted, like a September series against the Braves when he blew two games, he choked BIG time. 30-40 saves don't mean anything when you blow the saves that the team absolutely needs.

Franco, Myers, Benitez, Tug in that order. Wags, we'll see!
