Thinking of Klap
Bob Klapisch, the baseball columnist for The Record, suffered a serious injury to his right eye while playing in a baseball game in New Jersey last night. Here is The Record's story.
I spoke with Klap earlier today, and he is in relatively good spirits, given what has happened to him in the last 24 hours.
I worked alongside Klap at The Record from 1996 until 2001, when I switched to Newsday. And since then, we have remained close friends.
Klap pushed for me to become the Yankees beat writer at The Record, my first real break in the business. He helped me with countless news tips and pearls of wisdom about writing and reporting. That hasn't changed. Even Wednesday, when we were both at Yankee Stadium, he read my column from Tuesday night's Mets game and pointed out something I could have worded better.
So I'm putting this here to say that Klap is a good guy who deserves all of our thoughts, as he deals with this adversity. I know everyone in the sports media world who knows him will be thinking about him, as well as all the friends he's made in the baseball industry.
Here's to you, Klap. We know you're going to get through this.

Ken, I am a religious guy so I will say a prayer today for your friend. Thanks for sharing the story.
Bob Klapisch, get well soon. I hope its not a serious eye injury that causes damage to your vision. Love the columns you write for ESPN.com.
This sucks. It really amazes me that pitchers dont suffer more serious injuries. I know it would be hard but pitchers really should wear goggles and helmets. Especially in leagues with medal bats.
Saddened to read of the misfortune he suffered. He is my favorite baseball writer. I hope that his vision is not adversely affected and look forward to his next column, whenever it comes. Thanks for the update. It was very thoughtful of you.
I hope that Bob Klapisch has a quick and full recovery. He is a true professional in his field.
Thanks for the nice thoughts, guys...
I hope he will recover soon!
Make a quick and complete recovery Mr Klapisch. As Richie G says, it's amazing this doesn't happen more often in baseball games. Whether "goalie masks" for pitchers is an option, I don't know. Joe Garagiola used to talk about when his Pirate teams started wearing batting helmets, old timers like Frankie Frisch would ridicule them.
Imagine someone doing that now.
Good luck to you Bob (even if it's your fault people want to know if Mariano is starting the All-Star Game Tuesday night)! I read you when you were with the News and Post, and you did a really terrific job over there for many years.
