“Nappy-headed hos.”
Rutgers, which started the season 2-4 and advanced to topple the nation’s No. 1 team in the NCAA Tournament and eventually play for the national championship, was reduced to “nappy-headed hos.”
In some Cro-Magnon commentary on Don Imus’ WFAN radio show, he and his cohorts offered asinine assessments of Tuesday’s national championship game, which Tennessee won, 59-46, over Rutgers. Their color-based commentary said the women were tattooed “rough girls” who looked more like the Toronto Raptors or Memphis Grizzlies and that Tennessee was the prettier team. And they weren’t talking about playing style.
Imus apologized Friday. Great.
Some people have called for his firing. It’s not the first time he or his sidekicks have made racist, misogynistic comments. Firing him won’t solve anything, though the pollution of the airwaves might be slightly reduced. Another caustic windbag will take his place.
Imus’ comments and others like them – because this is not the first time such things have been said about women athletes in general and Rutgers’ basketball team in particular – highlight people’s discomfort with women who don’t fit into the constricting mold set for them.
In a 2001 column in the Connecticut Post mocking Rutgers’ attempts to rival Connecticut, Chris Elsberry wrote, “All the tattoos, all the black uniforms and the headbands and the bravado you take to the court doesn’t mean a thing when you don’t have the talent, or the respect, to say that you can stand with the best.”
OK, he didn’t use the words “hard-core hos,” as Imus’ executive producer did, but he might as well have.
Much of society is frightened by women with muscles who have tattoos on those muscles and wear sweatbands and – gasp – sweat, and perhaps don’t conform to the traditional standards of beauty. They’re especially put off if those muscled, tattooed, sweating women are black. Even more so if they wear their hair in braids. And the men are particularly intimidated if the aforementioned women set hard picks, box out, make steals and run the fast break better than they do.
The Rutgers team under Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer since 1995 has always played a tough, grinding style that puts defense first. Every team she’s coached has played that way, and they make no apologies for it. They just keep going to Final Fours – she’s been there four times with three different schools.
This isn’t a beauty contest, it’s basketball. If good looks of the physical variety – and not the shooting variety – were required, a lot of the best male players in the game would have been kicked off the court.
There’s a longtime double-standard in women’s sports. The athletes are expected to look good AND play good. Well. Society likes its sporty women to be pretty, blonde and pony-tailed. That’s why Anna Kournikova, who never won a tennis major, still is more popular and gets more lucrative endorsements than Chamique Holdsclaw, who won three consecutive NCAA basketball championships at Tennessee and an Olympic gold medal.
Karl Malone won games and praise with his tough playing style. Why shouldn’t his daughter, Cheryl Ford, who’s won two WNBA championships with the Detroit Shock, get props for her ability to rip down rebounds and intimidate in the paint?
Today’s basketball players are tough and athletic, and that’s beautiful.

Bravo. Well written.
Don Imus has been a jerk and he will always be a jerk.
Oh I'm sorry, I didn't know what I was doing.
The bozo has been in radio for 30 plus years, he knows exactly what he is doing.
Times have changed the "Don Rickles" type of humor is not acceptable anymore. Yet Imus & Stern are allowed to continue.
Isn't "Freedom of Speech" a hoot!
Everyone should use thier "Freedom of Station Change" and turn Imus off!
Wah, wah. Are you really that daft? Come on, it was funny. Do you really have your had so far up your ass that you feel that people's words should be restricted to only saying good things?
And come on, are you gonna tell me that Ajavon chick is hot? Screw that noise.
HEY, WHY ISN'T SHARPTON GOING AFTER RONELL WILSON FOR SHOOTING THOSE DETECTIVES? TELLING PEOPLE WHAT A BAAAADDDD BLACK GUY HE IS??? OH, THAT'S RIGHT--HE LIKES TO GET ON THE PODIUM AND THROW HIS BULL AROUND BECAUSE HE'S AN OPPORTUNIST. AND HE DOESN'T MAKE ANY MISTAKES, RIGHT?? OH..RIGHT--MS. BRAWLEY DOESN'T COUNT!!
Get real! It's okay for him to refer to the vice president as a war criminal or comments about Catholic priests but heaven forbid that something is said about this group. I more upset that he even decided to give charlatan Sharpton two minutes. Sorry, I didn't hear the interview, becasue I'm sure Al said he was sorry about Tawana Brawley and the Duke lacrosse case.
Don Imus should be Fired Period .
Our society seems to have lost the ability to discern between racist vitriol and (crude) attempts at humor. I say this because anyone who listens to Imus regularly knows he is anything but racist. His show makes fun of just about everyone, and it's not meant to be mean spirited or hateful. It's meant to be funny. Some people don't think this type of humor is funny. Fine, don't listen/watch. I find it interesting that Mr. Sharpton and others have picked up on this particular incident ... I've heard things just like this on Imus countless times before. Admit it ... at some point everyone laughs at someone else. It's sophmoric but that doesn't make it racist.
I am as liberal as a liberal can be. I know the pain and damage words can do. Thank you all for making me embarrassed to be a liberal. To say that Imus is a bigot and needs to be fired is simply an ignorant and unintelligent statement. If you look at the Rutgers players you will understand that what was said about them would be similar to hearing JJ's sister refer to him as a telephone pole with long arms. Some speech is hateful, but we must all remember that some speech is just that, speech, funny, not funny, what ever your taste, but not hateful. What Imus said was not hateful. What you Sharpton kooks are looking for is hateful.
There is no excuse for what IMUS said about those girls. I am hurt for those women and I am hurt for african peoples who those words injured. Its unacceptable and it was racist. Bernard is definitely the shows in house racist and IMUS is as well to allow and encourage him. I will no longer listen to the show and I encourage you all to do the same. He also referred to them as "jigaboos". FYI, to the best of my ability, I do not support any form of art that is derogatory and hurtful to others. We all need to stand up for women who for the most part lack a voice in the mainstream.
I go back with Imus to his days in Cleveland, calling up May Company, asking if they had Freudian slips.
Comedy is in the eye of the beholder. Mike Richards wasn't funny, to me. I thought Bernard McGurk's comment after Imus' utterance referencing Spike Lee's School Days (the wannabees, light-skinned long hair vs. the jiggaboos, dark-skinned wooly hair)was an interesting comment. I didn't think any light would be brought to the situation by Imus going on Al's show. But Hannity and O'Reilly have their clips for the week and Tawana Brawley once again is paraded out rather than a discussion about Gonzalez, Cheney, Rove and the War.
I'd rather hear what Don I. has to say about the state of Black Ameica and the state of America to see what he and Al might agree about. Agreeing to form consensus, or agreeing to disagree is no longer a demonstrated American family value (meaning neither "left" or "right").
Stupid Americans! The most successful democracy in the world and 300+ years later you still think it is funny to demean others based on their physical attributes! Grow up WHITE America!
Bemused Russian...Yeah, white Russian!
White America has a problem with race. Particularly, with people of color with brown skin. Imus, like many whites, is not even intouch with their racial prejudices and therefore blindly discriminates without consciousness. People of color have faced a myriad of trials and hostilities at the hands and deragotory mindset on whites and for the most part have remained resilient. And despite our efforts to define and achieve our meaning of success, we are still subject to white ridicule and indignities both in and out of the press.
This issue is not about Al Sharptan. This is about arrogant white americans who can perpetrate evils with little or no consequences; this is about an obvious "privileged class" by mere color of skin. One who is quick to judge and point the finger but never truely analyzing self and honestly dealing with the man in the mirror, neither individually or collectively. White americans will and can never know the black experience. Many simply trust that there perspective and understanding of any given situation is reality. I challenge white america to imagine themselves, their children, family and freinds being referred to in a most demeaning manner in conjunction with a history of racial injustices and maltreatment to find the Don Imus and related incidents "humerous."
Let's not make generalities about "white America." I am a white, Jewish-born American. I was born in the Bronx and my best friend in pre-school was African-American. We moved to eastern Queens where I went to PS 186 in the early- to mid-70s. Even though it was a predominantly white neighborhood, with white, mostly Jewish teachers, the school was a melting pot and I am a better person -- a better American -- for it. We had African Americans, Latinos, Asians, Irish, German, Catholics, Jews, etc. and I can't recall one time that there was ever a "racial" incident.
I am married to a Latino woman from Washington Hts. We have 2 beautiful sons who are a reflection of a loving, Christian home where they are being taught to respect all people.
All that said, I have been listening to Imus for 30 yrs through his bad times and good times. Credit the man for all the good he's done and continues to do. He is sincere and his efforts to quickly apologize and reach out to those he offended are to be applauded in a time where most celebs hide behind lawyers and publicists.
Dislike him for these or any other comments if you will, but don't discredit the efforts of people who actively battle real racists by calling Imus a racist. It's base and it's too easy.
And while you accusing the man of being hate-filled, please ask yourself why you HATE him so much. Hate is hate!
Peace.
Imus aka the Iman, should be the Gone-man. It's important for him to be fired. He and his side-kicks have been out of control for so many years that i wonder how he stays on the radio or tv??? Fire him please. Let's realllly start changing America!
Imus aka the Iman, should be the Gone-man. It's important for him to be fired. He and his side-kicks have been out of control for so many years that i wonder how he stays on the radio or tv??? Fire him please. Let's realllly start changing America!
I am getting sick and tired of this "white America" crap. When did we start having two differnt America's? It is people that use these types of words that allow racisism to exsist today. I have been painted with the white label my whole life, but I am not even "White". Who is any more? I am Latino. But b/c I am tall, light skinned and have light eyes, I have been included.
WE ARE ALL INDIVIDUALS, WITH FREE MINDS TO THINK FOROURSELVES. THERE IS NO CONSPIRACY FROM "THE MAN", THERE IS NO WHITE AMERICA.
Continue to think this way and racisim will never die.
So Imus will be suspended for two weeks. Whoopty-do. I would feel better if he were suspended "without pay" for his remarks...even better if he were fired for his racist..yes racist remarks. Imus should be held accountable for his remarks and owes the women on the Rutgers team and actually all women for his derogatory remarks. It's amazing to me that he's been allowed to stay on the air for as long as he has.
Nappy headed ho...tossed out as if it was a funny statement for jokes. To me, a black woman, those are 3 of the most hurtful words in the English language. Coming from someone who has been called that many times- from disrepectful men in the neighborhood, classmates in school and even famiy members, no matter how many tiems you hear that, it cuts to the soul. And to hear it from Imus to describe talented, hard working black women was despicable. Admit it. So forgive me if a simple apology is not enough to heal that wound. We are human too.
Lighten up. Don Imus is no racist. I'll bet you are.
I think his comments not only was horrible but i think if i would have said"those little trailor park pale crackers"sports figures looks so bad where would that leave me?
Blacks or Whites we needs stop hating each other. When are we going stop hurting each other. Mr. Imus needs to be careful when he makes command about other race. It's ok to make a joke. Mr. Imus needs to remember its a time and place for every. May God bless and help us all in America.
Love, Love and peace
Why isn't there an outcry to fire Bernard McGurk who is IMUS' executive producer,he is the one who usually makes bigotted jokes. I have seen him admonished by Imus before.I am not sure why Imus alowed himself to be goaded by Bernard this time.Imus is a good man,and his efforts at worthwhile causes is evidence of that.As a black man who listens to Imus, I am convinced that he will be apologizing again if he does not get rid of his executive producer Bernard McGurk.
SOUNDS LIKE THERE WAS INTENT, AND SPIRITED ELEMENTS IN THOSE SO CALLED JOKING COMMENTS, ASK YOURSELF, WITH ALL THE UPROAR ABOUT RACE IN GENERAL HOW CAN HE NOT KNOW THAT WORDS ARE VERY HURTFUL? COMBINE THAT WITH 30 YEARS IN THE BIZ, AND WHAT YOU GET IS IMUS
CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG PLEASE! THERE IS ALREADY ENUFF HATE IN THE WORLD TODAY, WE DO NOT NEED TO HELP THIS STORY ALONG, IT HAS TAKEN ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN
Sharpton and Jackson do not repesent the average african american. They are no more than self attention seeking has been personalities. They are constantly on the search for some small comment that might be interpreted as racist and the crawl from underneath the rock which they are hiding to gather thier small group of mindless followers to make some noise and draw attention to themselves. I am sure that 99% of the african americans who heard this comment chuckled to themselves beacuse they are smart enough the see it was a joke. Whatever happened to freedom of speech. Why don't we just change the name of this country to Iran, Syria, North Korea, China, Russia, or anyother freedomless country you might like.
I believe that Don Imus should be fired - as someone else mentioned, after 30 years in radio, he should have known better. His racist, misogynistic comments have gone too far. Those who defended him in the past are going to have an increasingly hard time doing it now.
He has offended nearly everyone - every free-thinking, non-racist, non-bigoted person - most of whom don't listen to this show anyway! The advertisers who support him and his show should be boycotted - and then tell them WHY! Only when we who feel this is wrong make it clear why we are doing what we are doing will things change.
I am proud to be African-American and a woman, and I have NEVER used the term 'ho' with anyone. Put this one on the shelf with the n-word and retire them both - forever!
let imus meet up with the team and say he s sorry.everybody makes mistakes.and we are all differnt.lets imus did nt make those remarks and another personalty on tv did who had the same ethics mr imus has than what?wheres the common sense.meet with imus and let him say sorry.lets forgive and forget or forgive but not forget i believe imus is sincere and sorry give him a chance to prove himself.
The comment was made in the context of achieving black women. Imus words were meant to devalue their success on the courts. Always and forever, whites will think they are better than Blacks. The bondage is off and we are not taking it anymore.
In the real world termination would be considered and with speedy results. Go and talk like that in corporate America and then count your blessings.
Once again a comment made about a black person is assumed to be racist. What if he said Paris Hilton looked like a cracked out ho? Some might be offended, some might laugh, but I gauruntee there is no national news story about it the next day. Yes, black people have suffered racism for a long time and probably always will. But what about BET? Black Entertainment Television. How can you be allowed to call a station that, yet that isn't considered racist. See how far a channel would get called White Entertainment Television before Al, Jesse, and the NAACP jumped all over it for being discriminatory. My whole point is just because you say something about a person who is black, it doesnt make you a racist. But thats what society will try to portray you as nowadays.
Don Imus is an equal opportunity offender. He will dis anyone whom he thinks deserves it, and many do. He, and his show, make disparaging remarks about many people and institutions. When the target is one of my favorite people, should I get offended or should I evaluate the remark and accept it or reject it based on its value? There are no sacred cows. Not yours. Not mine.
By the way one of the Rutger's players bragged on national TV about taunting the duke player, Lindsey Harding as she was shooting the last two critical free throws. This should have resulted in a technical foul but the refs did not have the courage to call it. Bragging about getting away with a violation does not reflect well on the player or her team.
Good or bad, the I Man makes me think about current events. That is a good thing. In addition he has supported and championed many worthwhile causes. Let him apologize and we can all get on with our lives.
Wah, wah. Are you really that daft? Come on, it was funny.
And for all the other comments like this...you all are clueless, delusional and just plain wrong.
No man, especially a white man should think calling a woman, especially a black woman a nappy headed ho. There is nothing funny or amusing about this. It is beyond insulting and white people would never accept this directed at their own and your trying to justify it as "comedy" only adds insult to injury.
Imus should be fired and American white folk need to wake the hell up.
Don Imus lives in America, we have free speech. I read the comments, the girls do have tatoos, and they are rough looking, so what is the contention here?
This whole issue is pure garbage. They were nappy headed, and probably some were ho's. How many times does 50 cent call women ho's and drop the N bomb in his albums? How many times have I heard black comedians say cracker, snow flake or use the "white guy voice"? But thats not racist because blacks say it. Its only racist if a white person says it. This is garbage and we should stand up against the double standard. As long as black wind bags like Sharpton (remember Tawana Brawley) and racist organizations like the NAACP pin blacks troubles on the words of a white radio host and not their own home grown problems like fatherless homes, welfare, drugs and violence they will continue to fall behind the society curve and perpetuate their real problems.
Imus has got to go. BTW, I am choking my chicken right now.
This is rediculous. Reprimanded yes, fired no. Why is the double standard always in affect? I am so sick of the poor me mentality of so much of the african american population. Sharpton is a blowhard. I am still waiting for him to apologize to the Duke team that he said so many negative accusing things about. Better yet for him to instruct the so called victim on better ways and hard work to get what you want. The coach of Rutgers saying that they are some kind of great representatives of Rutgers? Wow that Rutgers is in a sad state of affairs. These are nothing but HOOD girls and everyone knows it. The HOOD is what is holding the african american population hostage. And TAM from above, how are they achieving black women? What are they offering society or even their race? Achieving would mean that they are doing something of substance. Why is it that young black girls will know who these players are yet not know who the most powerful black woman in history is? (Condoleezza Rice) Professional athletics and the successful black athletes reflect to the population that this is the only way to be successful. The duty falls on the parentsof the blacks children, they have FAILED to teach hard work, determination and fortitude into many of their children. Thank god this is changing. This is what will take us out of the 1700s. Quit blaming and parents be role models and take the responsibility of teaching your children values and hard work.
Why do Sharpton and Jackson still have credibility? I'm not an Imus fan, but who the heck are these race-baiters to get any sort of platform?
Oh, and by the way, has Karen Bailis called for the firing of Rosie O'Donnell for her racist slur against Asians?
Forget all the battles for and against speech. Don Imus said a trite remark. It was useless, and if he really wanted to be funny, he would have said something smarter.
But, forget all of that. In order to see if Imus should be fired, we need to look at his job.
He is a broadcast journalist, and it is a profession. Is what he said professional? Is what he said correct for a mass medium? NO. You can say what you want, but you do not say things that are useless and pointless. Especially when they aren't true. Right there, the code of ethics for journalists is broken.
Now we look at forgiveness. Should someone get a second chance? Of course. However, Imus didn't really apologize. He did something he was told to do to save his image. Nowhere in his ramblings did he seem sincere. How can anybody, even if they liked him before, trust someone who is supposed to be speaking the truth? How can his opinions and remarks be trusted if he cannot think of more educated words?
Imus should be fired, not for battles against free speech or his insincere apology, but for his unprofessional ism. If it was any of us, we would be gone. No apologies. No second chances. No overplayed coverage. Just a pink slip and a permanent mark on your record.
Bottom Line: Imus is a fool, and if he isn't fired, he should resign before he further bruises the image of the media.
What exactly did the Rutgers team do to earn such derogatory remarks??? Came from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs in one season. Wow, yeah, we should call them names for that! How about Talented Athletes....or True Sportswomen...maybe Awesome Women! No, instead Imus calls them "nappy headed ho's"...it just shows how little we have grown as a country when we allow such vitriol. Way to go, Rutger's women! YOU rock.
Are you all for real? We all discriminate, we all hate, we all judge in the most minute and indiscrete ways. We can all sit here and point our fingers to that person or this person. We can talk about our freedom of speech, and how it is our right to speak whenever, whereever and however we want. But we sure don't talk about ourselves.
America, this is all about ethics! And you should know what to say and when to say it when you have experienced what is wrong! I think that the problem in America, in our neighborhoods, our backyards, is that we don't all experience the same things. We are so quick to judge what is so different. You judge the poor mexican man for making the best of his life here in america for picking up garbage on the side of the road. I always say "You live to love the life you want to live." A better life. But because we are to blind to see that no one really is different, what makes us different is our judgement, and those of us who work so hard to get through life ignoring the signs of discrimination and hate, are the ones who go through this pain the most.
Im a college student at the University of Florida. I know what its like to be discriminated against. Im also an athlete, and this issue has bothered a lot because of my "minority" status. And you know what, I am making the best of what I've got, the first in my family to go to college, out of my entire high school class, 1 of 5, in a class of 300 to go to a university. I live by my motto, and in time I hope everyone understands that its the year 2007 and we still have issues of discrimination and hate? At some point in our lives we should learn, that everyone sleeps on the same rock.
Jesus Christ. What's with everyone getting so uppity? The I-man is a classy fellow. He knows what's what. It's not like the comments he made about the Rutgers players weren't based on hard, material observations; they're kind of rough looking characters, you know? Their hair is kind of nappy, and as I've learned from modern gangsta rap, "Ho" is an acceptable term for black women and should be flowered on flagrantly; it's actually rather complimentary, I hear. Imus offended someone. He apologized. Why don't people just get over it instead of bloody dickering and bickering? Where does any person get off trying to get someone fired because they don't like his words? If you want to boycott Imus, fine; do that, hit him where it hurts if your feelings are injured. But whinging about how he "needs to be fired" is absurd. Freedom of Speech, y'know? He's leased those airwaves he uses - he should be able to put whatever he wants to out on them. Hell, he should be able to drink tea with the Klan and some Neonazis on the air. Because that's just how America rolls.
As an Italian-American, I think it's time that David Chase go on the Jay Leno show and apologize for The Sopranos, which is an offensive portrayal to law abiding Italians like me.
I AM OUTRAGED!
Gimmie a break already. It's COMEDY. Will black comedians have to stop talking and dancing "white"? Will Latino comedians be unable to parody their cultural stereotypes? GET OVER IT!!! There's plenty more important things to worry about these days!
IMUS for President
Sure, Fired Imus for making a stupid mistake that Rev. Sharpton and Rev. Jackson can't forgive, even though they supposingly value the believings of the Almighty that does forgive.
PLEASE!
This hole thing has been
blown way, way, way out of
of perportion. Had he made a comment about whites, we would still be laughing.
"Looking back on when I, was a little nappy-headed boy"
-Stevie Wonder, from the song Sir Duke.
Imus should receive the same punishment that the rappers, singers, actors etc. receive for saying those words.
Get over the whole "minority" thing. You've played that card long enough. They have more opportunities now than whites do. "Minorities" get special treatment, even different grading scales at some universities. A man can say what he wants, we choose to listen or not to. It is a free country and we do have freedom of speech. If it were a comment against white women no one would care.
The only race I recall that everyone is apart of is the HUMAN race! God is not pleased with his children since we cannot seem to love each other without regard to race, social status, etc. I am a black woman, and I am proud to be both. I am also proud of white women, asian women, and so forth. I do not like being stereotyped and don't want to be exposed to any other type of bigotry! I love all individuals and wish that people would exercise their human and GODly right to love as well!
What's been lost in this discussion is that it's one thing for Don Imus to criticize powerful individuals. Calling Hillary Clinton "Satan" is pretty low, but Mrs. Clinton is a public figure who willingly puts herself out there. She's got to know that low comments from shock jocks comes with the turf.
The Rutgers women's basketball team, however, isn't fair game for Mr. Imus. They are in the public eye as a college sports team, not as individual celebrities or even as paid sports stars. Criticize their playing skills, say "I don't like women's basketball" or "I like Tennessee better than Rutgers." That's free speech. Commenting on the personal appearance and using slanderous, vulgar words about young women who have not sought the public eye as individuals is just wrong.
Finally, what's up with Imus and the hair thing? He's an old man with dyed blond hair and a Prince Valiant haircut. Blond Little Lord Fauntleroys are ok: if they're five or six years old. On Imus, it just looks ridiculous. He sure has some weird hair fixation.
(And commenting on Mr. Imus's hair is different from commenting on the Rutgers women's team's hair. He's PAID to be a public figure and dumb comments come with the turf.)
You all are rediculous. They are nappy headed and chances are that most of them are Ho's. Instead of trying to do something with their lives that will benefit someone other than themselves, they are playing basketball, the identifying factor in the black community. If you aint a baller what are you? The black community glorifies the athlete and the drug dealer. Why? If it wasnt for basketball would these girls have even attempted to go to college? Maybe a few. yea, they are a hell of a role model for young black girls. I emplore you to talk to these girls, listen to there dialogue and then tell me that they are role models. Tell me then what image they are portraying to the black community.
The Black community is destroying itself by being so opportunistic to itself and destructive in its lifestyle encouraged (media and music). YOu dont have to drive a pimped escalade to be successful, you dont have to wear expensive clothes and jewelry to be respected. Those things will come in time as you achieve that level. The population keeps themselves poor trying to impress everyone how rich they are.
I can see both sides of this issue; I see valid points on both sides.
- Imus did engage in negative, racially based stereotyping based only on the appearance of the Rutgers Woman's team. Racism is unfortunately still a problem in the USA and the world at large, so his comments are more egregious than if they had been directed towards a white woman's basketball team.
- There is a clear double-standard about who can say what about black people, and minorities in general. People are allowed to say quite mean things about white people as a group, and no one gets bent out of shape. I think that one thing that preserves racism in our society is this double-standard, and the fact that the black community is so hyper-sensitive about it, to the point that they regularly discriminate against white people.
So to me it seems that a long-term solution is to get rid of the double-standard, to make everyone treat everyone else fairly, and to realize this means a huge change in most things in our society, because almost nothing is fair these days.
The unfairness is class-based; and believe me there are powerful interests who want to keep us on the canard of racism to keep attention off of the real elite minority that benefits from all of this: corporations and their wealthy majority stock holders. Imus works for them, so do you and I. What does Clarence Thomas think? He's against affirmative action, he probably doesn't hold a grudge against Imus. This is not, in fact, really a racial thing at all- the fundamental divisiveness of which is just a symptom is class-based, not race-based. The sooner we all wake up and realize that and take control of our governmane back, the sooner real healing and reconciliation can begin.
Ok, so what about this scenario.
Sid Rosenburg: Duke eliiminated in the first round, IMan. First time since '85 [or whatever].
Imus: Well, they got too many white guys. Can't win with that.
Not a person would ask for his resignation.
So honestly, screw anyone who can't let Imus speak his mind. And honestly, I disagree with what he said. It was stupid and thoughtless. But really, come on, does Don Imus HATE black people? Of course not.
And how many times have we heard black comedians make "white" jokes and say cracker but because of something that happened 150 freaking years ago, us whiteys are in a 0-2 hole. God forbid one of us say spic, nigger, nappy, chink, kike. There, I'm a racist, right?
Idiots.
Back in 1988 I was a 18 year old Teen in the US Navy when a white guy whom, I was pretty good friends, slipped up and called me a *igger..
I was told to report him, I decided not to. But my friendship with him ended as of that moment.
The pain that guy went through and the riducule he received was much worse than Being reported or fired.
I don't think Firings Imus is the answer. i do think he will have this on him for years to come. What he has done in the past is the past. We all know we are in different times. We must change with the times.
While In high school, guys used to unlatch the girls Bras for kicks. We all that it was funny. If I did this today, I would probably jailed and ruined forever!
I cant believe that people are making such a big deal of this. How many times have I listened to hot 97 and hear them rippin on crackers?? do those dj's get fired? is that even talked about as an issue? Come on. This double standard sh*t has to go otherwise racism will never end. People need to realize that. I think Imus is a schmuck anyway but the guy didnt do anything wrong.
Liberals scare the hell out of me with their Orwellian desire to limit speech, and by so doing, limit thought. Read "1984". It's the liberal game plan taken to horrific fruition.
Man, People keepy comparing this to Some type of Comedy stand up show or something.
Brian, I agree that some rap songs, hot 97 or whatever, they all say some crazy stuff.
But For a talk radio dude to say These are some Nappy headed hoes?
We all know we think things to ourselves, but know better than to say it. Evidently, what he says was not right. blacks are not the only ones upset about it.
Imus is not a racist.... rather he is a totally obnoxious-self-centered-pompous-ignorant ass of a human being, a total chavunist incapable of understanding or accepting responsibility only wanting to take credit.. his rantings and ravings bespeak of an individual so full of himself that nothing or no one else exists... every thing is about him, Imus in the morning, I-man, Imus ranch, Imus salsa, on-on, the center of the universe.. he constanly puts down others and elevates himself at their expense, the benchmark of a insecure person lacking in a true self concept.. his behavior is consistent in this sense... he talks the talk, cannot walk the walk... an indulgent upscale individaul who does nothing for himself-depends totally on hired help from driving him around to taking care of his son, yet he pontificates about his greatness as a parent and how his wife-doubt her hands fit a mop have greened america... he is not capable of understanding how he has demeaned all women by targeting the outstanding young women who represented rutgers and women every where with great dignity-honor, not just on the court, but in all aspects of their lives... with this said enjoy his program and even him, a comical-farsical presentation of a human being who claims rfd is his favotite network while living totally thelife of luxury, a stick man with the worst excuse for hair in the universe making unreal threats to " whoop"
all who disagree with him, a true legend is his own limited mind... his future should be up to the public and the advertising community, as always he has made this sad event about him and not his boorish behavior, he has been Don " I am an ass " Imus past-present-future, willing to prostitute himself to remain in the public eye...
rs...
Too bad you all have your minds controlled by the government and can no longer think for yourselves. Political correctness is just another way of showing how obedient and stupid you are. Imus had nothing to apologize for!
Im not talking about rap songs, Im talking about the morning talk show and hosts that were on. I forget who it was with Angie Martinez...that dude thats an awful rapper..funny but really bad. Imus isnt a newscaster or anything..he does a comedy talk show like howard stern.. they make fun of whiteys all the time. I wish I was important enough to make a big deal about it. I guess if I wanted to I could find a way..but really why should I care about what 1 person is saying who means nothing to me. I stopped listening to that idiot a long time ago because he says stupid sh*t and thinks farting is funny for 6 hours. Because Imus thought it was funny how ugly these girls were and he ripped on them, if that bothered me than I just wouldnt listen to him anymore.
HO! Ho! HO!
As a Black person,
I'M OUTRAGED and MAD
This isn't about RACE
this is about MONEY
The Rap artists constantly use the N-word and call women both black and white HO's yet nothing is said about them.I think REV Al and other black activist ought to ride the train and eat lunch in a public school, where again both black and white kids use both the N-word and the H-word. When a black person (thug) kills a white cop,or when a black person kills another black person where is the REV at. He is no where to be found, yet when a rich white guy or a white person working for a company with money (CITY)he is all over the place.
FOR THE MONEY and ONLY FOR THE MONEY
Rev AL and others activists ought to go to the SOUTH where a black person is put in jail for just being black,or what about all the black people who are homeless.
WHAT IS HE DOING FOR THEM, ABSOLUTY NOTHING.
why??? because there is no money to be made.
Education is the key to success, every body white/black young and old should be educated and held responsible for using hurtful or disrectful words.
NOT JUST THE RICH WHITE PEOPLE.
Imus, stop appologizing!
What total and complete hypocrisy this all is..
What kind of music do you suppose these girls listen to?? RAP! They certainly have no problem with that, do they??? Hmmmmmm The most degrading, demeaning to woman music that has ever exsisted. This so called 'singers' invented the word Ho, but guess WHO runs out and buys millions of their records??????
Give me a major break here!
Sticks and Stones......
Karen-- you were dead-on. I loved this post.
Otherwise, I'm sick of hearing people trying to to make this about anything or anyone else other than Imus. This is NOT about Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson or idiotic rappers. All of those topics have been discussed and protested against before. Each of us is accountable for our own actions-- and Imus should be held accountable for his-- regardless of what other people in this society are doing. He's not some 16 year old kid. He must be at least over 60. Blaming the culture for his actions, indeed! LOL! Unfortunatly, Imus and his supportors are seeking to detract from his culpability by pointing towards everyone else on the planet as an excuse for his behavior. And on top of that, they want to say that because he's done some good things, he can't be a racist. When since were those attributes mutally exclusive? You know what? Even a broken clock is right two times a day. A few kind pats on the head to a few sick black kids does not change the fact that this man has a racist streak in him that is unacceptable. Imus was not born yesterday. I'm 41. Imus has been in the radio biz for 40 years! He's seen more of what racism and sexism has done to people in this country than I could ever possibly recall-- and yet he feels comfortable in 2007, calling a group of young, student athletes a bunch of ungroomed whores?!?!?! Five of these women were freshmen!!! They aren't the Little Kim's and Foxy Brown's of this world. They aren't public figures. They are college girls. Imus should be held accountable for his racism. I don't know why anyone ever tolerated it in the past, anyway. I don't care that he's said similar things about Arabs and Asians and his own wife. I think that people should have spoken up then-- and I don't know why no one called for his dismissal before. But if it has to be that insulting a group of African American college girls is the final straw-- then so be it. It won't be the first time discrimination against African Americans and women break down walls. And if other groups insist on staying silent about racism and sexism, then it won't be the last.
I have little doubt that Imus is a racist and should have been shut up long ago. But let's not overlook the role these women played in laying the groundwork for his insult. They wear their hair in styles meant to challenge the norms of American culture and they adorn their bodies with trashy tattoos straight from the gutters of our inner-city ghettos. And then surprise, surprise--some old racist like Imus refers to them as "nappy headed hos." So if these and other African American women don’t want to be perceived this way, how about trying to assimilate, rather than challenge, our cultural norms?
Hey Zed Smith; "Assimilate" into whose culture? And Why? According to my historical frame of reference, the Native Americans were first here with a viable cultural system intact. Please enlighten me on what "others" are to assimilate into? I eagerly await your response.

"There is a clear double-standard about who can say what about black people, and minorities in general. People are allowed to say quite mean things about white people as a group, and no one gets bent out of shape. I think that one thing that preserves racism in our society is this double-standard, and the fact that the black community is so hyper-sensitive about it, to the point that they regularly discriminate against white people."
YAHTZEE!
Racism is, supposedly, "hatred or intolerance of another race or other races." Alternatively, "discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race."
Odd... it doesn't say anything about racism being limited to "whitey hates blacks." In fact, it doesn't mention color at all. It seems anyone can be a racist. All it takes to qualify is two people with two different skin colors.
Funny. My 40 years of experience in America seem to indicate that something has been lost in the popular translation of the term.
Imus was wrong, and he should be fired... as soon as we're ready to drop the double-standard crap and fire Carlos Mencia, Dave Chapelle and, well, most of the best comedians in America today.
Sharpton is both a bigger blowhard, buffoon and racist than Imus could ever be. If Sharpton truly believed in eliminating racism, he could listen to virtually any black-oriented radio show in America and find something nearly every day to set him off.
But, oh no. We can't do that. Racism in America is a coin with only one side.
It's gotten so bad that white kids go to ridiculous lengths to NOT be viewed as "white," while people of every other race and nationality are expected to "embrace" or "be proud of" their heritage.
I'd like to be proud of my heritage, too. And, SURPRISE! My heritage doesn't include any slave-owning. So why am I being penalized for that? Oh... yeah. "Approved" racism.
The prevailing attitude that people like Al Sharpton want you to buy into is that "It's wrong to make black Americans even feel bad about anything; but it's cool to be racist toward white America."
You know what? F&%k that. I refuse to play that game any more. After 40 years, I'm tired of being screamed at because I'm NOT black.
I treat everyone by one simple rule -- the golden rule. You know, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
So, if you treat me with kindness and respect, I'll respond in kind. If you choose not to interact with me at all; I'm fine with that, too.
But if you want to get in my face, call me names and threaten me; I'll be damned if I won't respond to that, too. I'm sick of being expected to sit there and "take it" because of others' ignorant, racist views.
Racism is either all wrong or all right.
This "It's ok for some people to be racist but not for others to utter anything that anyone might feel is tinged with any racism whatsoever" attitude is making a meaningful dialog on this vital subject impossible and, ultimately, really screwing up America.
If those girls would have been of any other race Imus would have saw them differenly. Not as nappy headed whores. Those young ladies are somebody daughters, or somebody sisters. Fire the Jackass!
I don't think Imus should
be fired.I don't belive that,
Al Sharpton is a man of HIS words.
I belive HE is talking big about these RAP people as
far HIM saying HE will go after them.

I belive big talk is all HE is.Nothing MORE.Less
YES.If HE is a MAN of HIS
WORDS.IF SO THEN SHOW ALL of
