Tomorrow is deadline to grieve Suffolk taxes

Tuesday is the deadline to grieve taxes in Suffolk County, and if you're a home seller, challenging assessments may be an advantage, say real estate agents and others in a Newsday story.

The deadline for Nassau was in March.

The chance of lowering the assessment on your home increases during slower real estate markers. That's because assessors use sales prices of comparable homes in the area as a guide. Your property might be assessed as a $600,000 home, but if nowadays, the house can fetch something like $550,000 or less, that sounds like grounds for a challenge, experts said.

For those who missed this year's deadlines, the real estate market could still be slow into next year, say economists and other experts, so there's still a chance of getting assessments lowered.
