Price reduction for historic Gold Coast estate

The price of a historic Muttontown home, known as Charlton Hall, has been reduced to $3.9 million.

The 22-room house was built in 1917 for businessman David Dows. Architect Horace Trumbauer used a English house as the model for the estate, which had 97 acres when it was built. "It's a beautiful manor home," says Joann Kelly, who is co-listing the property with Leslie Ottaviano, both of the Locust Valley office of Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Now situated on 5.25 acres, the house features four "very grand" rooms on the first floor, which has 13-foot ceilings, says Kelly. The reception hall, alone, is 25 by 40 feet. There are French doors and floor-to-ceiling windows, says Ottaviano. "The home gets so much light," she adds, "even on the second floor," where there are seven bedrooms, including two masters, and 11-foot ceilings. The third floor contains 11 additional rooms. There are nine fireplaces.

The house has retained its "integrity" over the years, says Ottaviano. "The architectural detail of the house is unlike anything that I have ever seen before," she says.

Public records show that the house is owned by Joseph and Keri Guarino.

The property has been on and off the market since 1995 at various prices, the highest at $5.5 million.
