A new BBC Radio documentary features an interview with a former FBI agent who claims that Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger escaped an assassination plot almost 40 years ago, here on Long Island. Details of this plot were also released in a book published in 2001 by thesmokinggun.com.
Following the death of a fan at this Stones’ 1969 concert in Altamont, Calif., Jagger disavowed the Hells Angels, who had provided security at the event. Jagger’s statements angered members of the group who set out to murder the rocker, “at a residence which Jagger maintained in Long Island, N.Y.,” according to an FBI report obtained by The Smoking Gun. The would-be assasins, “utilized a boat to travel out to the Long Island estate of Jagger and were interrupted as a storm blew up capsizing the boat and sinking it.”
No word on exactly where that estate was, but Jagger has long been associated with Montauk. In 1975, the Rolling Stones, rehearsed for the band’s U.S. tour at Andy Warhol’s estate, which the band had rented for a reported $5,000 per month. Director Paul Morrissey, who had co-owned the property with Warhol, sold the property in 2007 for $27.5 million. Jagger was also known to frequent the estate of Warhol’s neighbor, photographer Peter Beard. Beard’s estate has been on the market for several years with Prudential Douglas Elliman. The latest asking price is $26 million.
Jagger is said to have been inspired to write the song “Memory Motel” by the Montauk landmark bar and hotel that still stand on Montauk Highway in the town.
