Nassau County Homeownership Center to open

Nassau County's Homeownership Center now has a home.

The county will dedicate the center, at 40 Main St. in Hempstead, tomorrow. Though the center has been operating with limited services for a year, it can now offer a place for the public to come for housing counseling.

"We weren't able to offer counseling effectively because we lacked the facility," said Connie Lassandro, the county's director of housing.

The center, which is certified by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, offers programs for first-time homebuyers, including financial education and budgeting, as well as downpayment grant information. It also runs a five-week program to educate first-timers about looking for a home and obtaining a mortgage.

Homeowners can receive post-purchase counseling at the center. The service gives homeowners guidance on maintaining a home, buying adequate insurance coverage and budgeting for repairs.

For Nassau residents having trouble handling their monthly payments, the center offer foreclosure prevention counseling. Those at risk of default can call 516-571-HOME for help.
