Nassau's Homeownership Center wins federal grant

Nassau's Homeownership Center was the only Long Island-based housing counseling agency to receive a grant recently from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The agency will use the $20,000 to print more brochures to let the community know about its services, which include foreclosure prevention counseling and first-time homebuyers programs.

"This $20,000 will give us more resources to get out there in the community," said Connie Lassandro, the county's director of housing.

Nassau is the only municipality in the state that offers a HUD-certified counseling program. The grant was part of $44.1 million HUD distributed to nearly 400 national, state and local housing counseling agencies around the United States.
