The bad rap on Long Island is that there’s no affordable housing. Not true.
Some good things are free, like the rights that go with a three-bedroom, $299,000 house in Center Moriches.
"It's near the beach and you can dock your boat right there," said Realtor Georgeanna Mortellaro of Georgeanna's Realty in Shirley. "It's only for residents. The beach rights you don't have to pay."
Holiday Beach is just a five-minute walk, she said, and the new homeowners can get a boating slip if one's available but Mortellaro said she's not sure how much that would cost.
On Cynthia Lane, the ranch-style house has cathedral ceilings, skylights and a hot tub outside, a few feet from the mud room in the main house.

You have to be kidding me.....300k for a shack????????????This is why people (like us) have left long island. I have a beautiful 2500 sq ft house (4br/2bath/lr/dr/kitchen/12 ft cathedral ceilings) in a beautiful development w/a pool and my taxes are only 1500 a yr........all for 175K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get a grip NY!
I left Long Island in 1992 for Atlanta, then moved to Florida in 2003. I sold my PortJeffSta house (4br,1.5bth,1/2 basement for $148,000 in '92. I see it now on MLSLI.com for $379,000. How can a young couple afford a 10 - 20% down payment, much less the taxes I've seen at about 6-8k year? Unreal.
We can't afford to live here, only rent. And we're being priced out renting now. Center Moriches is fine, the school district is what keeps me away. I would not consider buying this house for more than $225,000. In my opinion, this is not "affordable house of the day" material.
