Habitat to break ground in Wyandanch

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County raises walls on a site tomorrow, helping another Long Island family escape the snares of substandard housing.

Habitat-Suffolk is building a new home for Crystal Hill-Saylor, 43, and her three children at N. 25th Street, Wyandanch. Construction begins at 9 a.m., with the first wall scheduled to go up at 10 a.m.

The Hill-Saylor family is living in a small Wyandanch apartment that has no storage space or closets and other inadequate living conditions. Over the last few years, the family has struggled with homelessness, says Les Scheinfeld, associate director for Habitat-Suffolk.

Crystal is enrolled in the nursing program at Suffolk County Community College. Two of her children also attend college locally, and another child is in high school. "My children and I thank God for Habitat for Humanity and their sponsor networks," she says. Sponsors for the home include First Presbyterian Church of Oyster Bay, St. John's Episcopal of Cold Spring Harbor and CA.
