Why Edward Albee had to live in Montauk

albee

Sag Harbor is not the only town on the East End populated by world-class writers.

Playwright Edward Albee has lived in Montauk since the 1960’s. He tells Newsday’s Linda Winer this week that he purchased his home on Old Montauk Highway after seeing the town a few years earlier.

"There was no big highway then. I could see the ocean and the hills…I called up the rental agent and said, 'I've got to live out here.' This place had just come up for sale. I think it was $40,000, which I didn't have, and I said, 'Yeah, sure I'll buy it. Four-and-a-half acres.' I've lived here ever since."

Albee later purchased a nearby 4 ½ acre tract where he has operated the Edward F. Albee Foundation for 40 years.
