The Swamp

by Mike Dorning

charged that rival John McCain had "walked away" during Republican primaries from a commitment to immigration reforms that would provide citizenship to illegal aliens.

Obama made the accusation this afternoon in a speech to a group of Latino elected officials shortly after McCain went before the group to promise that immigration reform that included citizenship for illegal immigrants would be the Republican's "top priority" as president.

"Now, one place where Senator McCain used to offer change was on immigration. He was a champion of comprehensive reform, and I admired him for it," Obama said. "But when he was running for his party's nomination, he walked away from that commitment and he's said he wouldn't even support his own legislation if it came up for a vote."

Both Obama and McCain are engaged in a struggle to win support from Hispanic voters, one reason both agreed to appear today before the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, which was meeting in Washington.

An Obama spokesman said the Illinois senator was referring during his speech to a statement McCain made during the Jan. 30 Republican debate at the Reagan library in which McCain was asked whether he would vote for comprehensive immigration legislation he had sponsored.

"No, I would not, because we know what the situation is today," McCain responded at the debate. "The people want the border secured first. And so to say that that would come to the floor of the Senate -- it won't. We went through various amendments which prevented that ever -- that proposal."

"But, look, we're all in agreement as to what we need to do. Everybody knows it. We can fight some more about it, about who wanted this or who wanted that. But the fact is, we all know the American people want the border secured first," McCain continued.

The Obama campaign circulated a link to a YouTube video that includes the first few sentences of McCain's response at the debate.

In 2006, McCain co-authored and Obama supported comprehensive immigration legislation that would have included a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens.

The accusation rapidly stirred an e-mail skirmish between the two campaigns.

McCain's camp sent out a press release charging that Obama had undermined attempts to pass immigration reform legislation in 2006 by supporting amendments opposed by business interests that the McCain campaign called "poison pills."

The Obama camp responded with a statement McCain made on the Senate floor just before the final vote on the legislation in which the Arizona senator commended Obama for "working to ensure this bill moved successfully intact through the legislative process."

John McBush on Immigration...

In 2005, McCain supported comprehensive immigration reform, which included a pathway to citizenship. In fact he co-sponsored the bill.

Now, he claims that "if his original bill proposal came to a vote on the Senate floor, he would not vote for it."

I have no idea where McCain stands on immigration (or anything else for that matter) after todays speech because just like every other position he's had, he flip-flops on them depending on what day of the week it is and who he's speaking to.

I hope Obama rips into McCain on education, because actually hearing McCain talk about education today shows me he really has no idea what he's talking about in that regard. Luckily, Obama always does a great job of tying the economy back to education.

And I'm really sick of McBush whining about the town halls. Maybe he should participate in the Colbert's green screen challenge, and make himself interesting. They could do it live, then people would tune in to see what was happening on the lime green jello background he uses when he's giving speechs:

This is the most imporant election in our lifetime's for our economy. Immigration doesn't even match up to our biggest problems. We need a president that can keep taxes low and create jobs. Unfortunately, Obama doesn't know anything about business and our the U.S. is a fledgling business right now. ]

We need McCain and Romney to team up to take control of the mess ex-Oil investor Bush created. With regards to oil- it's all based off of speculation. There has been three bubbles in the past ten years: technology stocks, housing and now oil. Having worked at a hedge fund- I know it's the easiest trade to just go long and watch it go up.

Keep in mind when you hear people say it's going to $200 a barell- they are just saying that because they have a vested interest. There isn't a shortage of oil. When in the last twenty years have you went to SHELL and not gotten gasoline? Never..

Likewise, when Real Estate was overblown- since everyone owned it nobody wanted to admit a couple years ago prices were out of control. People only promote things they own.

Nevertheless, we need a good business that understands the fundamentals of economics to run the United States.

Because we need jobs and wealth to be created in order for all classes within the United States to flourish. Now you might think things have been terrible with Bush; however, you have to remember the economy goes in cycles and what we do today effects it about four years out.

I believe, if we stay conservative and allow companies and individuals to create wealth we will all have jobs. If it's up to Obama he will create a socialistic economy similar to Canada's and their personal tax rate is close to 60% and people only work about half of the year since there isn't any incentive to work.

America we need to get smart fast and take our own education seriously. Go back to school learn a new trade that fits into the seam of wealth creation- take out a loan and just do it- education is one thing they can't take away from you. China and India offer lower wages and a more educated workforce than in the United States unfortunately.

McCain and Romney need to lead the largest business in theh world, their team wouldto focus on low taxes and instilling college education into more American's so we can succeed in our intelligent world not the past industrial world we helped create.

Vote for McCain and hopefully Romney and they will focus on keeping tax rates low and jobs flowing.

And, with regards to oil- if the broker dealers or government would raise margin requirements by 100% you'd see oil drop to about $60 in three months. So push your local senators or congressmen to contact the NFTC and have them raise the margin requirements on all oil contracts and when it starts to fall it will fall faster than when it went up; similarly to the way tech stocks fell after their gigantic run-up in the late 90's.

Carpel,
Unfortunately for you Wingnutters, John McBush doesn't have a clue when it comes to the economy and his only answer is to "stay the course" with the failed Bush fiscal policies...and Plastic Mitt the Flip-Flopper? You've got to be joking, right?

Obama favors granting citizenship to illegal aliens. What part of "illegal" doesn't he understand? And what about his oath to uphold the laws of the United States? I guess oaths don't matter to Obama. Want his exact quote? Here it is: ""Give the 12 million people who are here illegally…a pathway to legalization." (Source: U.S. News).

Well the republican party while in complete power, was nothing like conservative. They spent like drunken sailors. It amazes me how they still believe let the companies do well and all will be great with the rest of us. The financial sector with NO oversight, led us into the sub-prime market, then when that failed, we bail out Bear Stearns to the tune of 29 billion. Then, while the bank is paying 2% for fed money, they are not passing any of that low % to us. Mortgages are going up as well as credit card interest. With friends like that....who needs enemas?

McSame can't even manage his own finances, how can we expect him to manage our countries finances?

Newsweek is set to publish a highly embarrassing report on Sen. John McCain, revealing that the McCains have failed to pay taxes on their beach-front condo in La Jolla, California, for the last four years and are currently in default, The Huffington Post has learned.

Under California law, once a residential property is in default for five years, it can be sold at a tax sale to recover the unpaid taxes for the taxpayers.

The McCains own at least seven homes through a variety of trusts and corporations controlled by Cindy McCain.

UPDATE: Newsweek's story is now online. The report notes that the McCains paid the bulk of their back taxes yesterday, but continue to owe additional taxes:

When you're poor, it can be hard to pay the bills. When you're rich, it's hard to keep track of all the bills that need paying. It's a lesson Cindy McCain learned the hard way when NEWSWEEK raised questions about an overdue property-tax bill on a La Jolla, Calif., property owned by a trust that she oversees. Mrs. McCain is a beer heiress with an estimated $100 million fortune and, along with her husband, she owns at least seven properties, including condos in California and Arizona. [...]

Shortly after NEWSWEEK inquired about the matter, the McCain aide e-mailed a receipt dated Friday, June 27, confirming payment by the trust to San Diego County in the amount of $6,744.42. County officials say the trust still owes an additional $1,742 for this year, an amount that is overdue and will go into default July 1. Told of the outstanding $1,742, the aide said: "The trust has paid all bills shown owing as of today and will pay all other bills due."

Wait, just a minute, Senator " Questionable Conduct " McCain has to check with Ms Noonan, as to who he is, on this issue !! She is the same script writer that gave us the Appeaser Supreme, Ronald Reagan. Poor Ronnie, never knew who he was, or where he was!! May he rest in peace!! Senator McCain's people better quit wishing for another 9/11 to boost their chances in November and that aide that suggested that, should be rode out of town on a rail !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

I think its good that McCain wants to listen to the citizens of the U.S. first before jumping in and granting citizenship. Obama is an elitist who thinks he knows what is good for me and my children. Here is an article from the suburban news. Not found here. Half of the illegals swept up had prior convictions from child abduction to drug related offenses. At 50% about 6 million of our new citizens have prior convictions.
ICE arrests 43 illegal immigrants

Federal authorities arrested 43 immigration violators in Waukegan, Highland Park, Highwood and other cities in the Chicago metropolitan area this week.

It was part of a five-day initiative led by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Fugitive Operations Teams.

Twenty-five of those arrested were immigrants who failed to appear for their immigration hearings or ignored deportation orders. The remaining 18 arrested were immigration violators that ICE officers encountered during their targeted arrests.

Of the 43 apprehended, 20 had previous criminal convictions in addition to their administrative immigration violations.

The foreign nationals arrested in the raid were from Albania, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Jordan, Mexico, Poland and Yugoslavia.

Of the 43 arrested, 27 were from Lake County, including nine in Highland Park, eight in Highwood, seven in Waukegan, two in Zion and one in Park City, said Tim Counts, an ICE spokesman.

Margaret Carrasco, an immigration rights activist with Casa Mexiquense in Waukegan, has been in contact with families of six Honduran nationals from Waukegan who were swept up in the raid. They were being held in Kenosha County Jail on Friday.

The six did not have previous criminal convictions and were in the process of appealing their administrative immigration violations when ICE arrested them, she said.

Some of the foreign nationals with criminal convictions included Jose Gabriel Arroyo-Diaz, aka Alejandro Gusman-Santibanez, a 38-year-old Mexican citizen who was arrested at his residence in Highwood. Arroyo-Diaz pleaded guilty to attempted child abduction in 2003 in Lake County and was sentenced to 160 days in prison. He was previously deported after he was released from prison, and illegally re-entered the United States.

Jose Garcia-Mata, a 22-year-old Mexican citizen, was arrested at his residence in Highland Park. An alleged gang member, he was convicted in May in Cook County for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Garcia illegally entered the United States in 2000.

Juan Roman Bautista-Eusebio, a 20-year-old Mexican citizen, was arrested at his residence in Highwood. An alleged gang member, Bautista-Eusebio was convicted in May 2006 in Lake County for obstructing justice. He last entered the United States illegally in 1997.

During the same five-day operation ending June 24, ICE officers arrested 32 illegal immigrants in Milwaukee and 48 in Kansas City.

ICE established its Fugitive Operations Program in 2003 to reduce the nation's backlog of immigration fugitives which is estimated to be 572,000"

If I were Barack I would stay away from the subject of immigration and attack McC on issues where he's much more vulnerable. McCain actually bit the bullet in sponsoring the (fairly decent compromise) bill last July, even at political cost. It almost cost him the nomination in fact.

There's no issue more divisive than immigration at the moment. So why bring it up when there are many safer, pocketbook issues to raise against Mac???
