The death stare isn't working anymore.

Earlier in the presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton had the distinct ability to intimidate Barack Obama. During their many initial debates, she would lock her eyes on him each time he talked, making him visibly uncomfortable and seemingly incapable of even making eye contact. She swatted away most every effort he made to draw a contrast.

Of the many measures of how Obama has evolved as a candidate, few were as apparent as his demeanor during the debate last week in Cleveland. The cower is gone. Now, Obama looks Clinton directly in the eye, with an air of confidence and no sign of fear.

When the campaign began, Clinton’s campaign seemed like so many bogeymen. Her national polling numbers seemed insurmountable. Her likely fundraising totals seemed unapproachable. Her mastery of policy made others wilt.

Brick by brick, though, Obama not only caught up but surged past her in every way of keeping score that counts going into the vital primaries in Texas and Ohio on Tuesday.

He has more money (including a staggering amount north of $50 million in February alone), more momentum (a 10-state winning streak), more votes and more convention delegates. He also is outpacing her in persuading party officials called Superdelegates to switch teams, which means he also is leading the league in steals.

But it is the more ethereal part of his candidacy, his growing confidence, that is most obvious on the public stage. In debates, he has ready counterpoints. On the stump, he is nimble and can respond quickly and with bite. For his doubters, he offers up smackdowns on Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, that might foreshadow the tenor of a fall campaign.

His campaign apparatus has been sturdy, too. Almost no major campaign soldiers on with no turmoil, no public infighting, no firings of one-time key aides. And while Obama's campaign no doubt has had its fights and its share of marginalized, once-powerful figures, it has managed to do that within the four corners of the campaign and not on the front pages of newspapers. Contrast that with the turmoil of the Clinton campaign, where recriminations find their way into front page stories in the Wall Street Journal and the Sunday edition of the New York Times.

That is one reason so many people believe the experience of running a successful national campaign is as good an indicator of capacity to serve as president as an extensive resume.

To be sure, there have been mistakes. Michelle Obama's comments about only newly finding pride in her country is destined for a future attack ad. But that might be the lone misstep in her first dance on the national stage.

And something tells us that it won't be quite as repeated as HIllary Clinton's comments about not baking cookies back in 1992. But her overwhelming performance has been positive as she has emerged as an animating force in her husband's campaign. It's even hard to find a photo of the Obamas' young daughters sleeping during a campaign event.

Obama’s gentlemanly bearing used to make people think that he couldn’t take a punch, let alone deliver one. The Clinton campaign consistently has said, "wait, oh just wait until the Republicans get ahold of the little lamb of a candidate that Obama would be."

The attacks instead seem to make him stronger, or at minimum energize his supporters who continue to turn out in historic numbers and open their wallets for him at record rates.

There is no precise moment when this should have been apparent to us, but one does stand out. When the Des Moines Register published its poll in the days before the Iowa caucus that showed Obama with a 9-point lead over Clinton, few believed it. The Register’s spot-on pollster, Ann Selzer, was skewered by the Clinton campaign for blowing it. Clinton advisers sent out a point by point rebuttal of a mere opinion poll.

Turns out that was only the first sign of panic.

The panic generated more attacks, and when those didn’t seem to work, attacks that were harsher and more directly personal. It was as though with each escalation, the Clinton campaign was certain that they would make Obama crack and lash out.

The louder his opponent, the calmer he gets. Clinton shoots him daggers. He returns with near bemusement that stops just short of mocking.

Obama could still lose, but not because Clinton stared him down.

Obama showed his lack of knowledge in the debate when arguing NAFTA: He referred to NAFTA causing jobs going oversees. Since when is Canada and Mexico located oversees to the U.S. This is the guy people want to lead: All talk but no substance nor knowledge

GOBAMA!!

I agree with you completely. I'm an Asian American senior citizen feminist, and am wondering how the nation can elect a commander-in-chief who keeps playing the gender card. She is NOT roaring as a woman but depending on her adulterous husband to win her the WH and her tears to keep older women giving her money. This after she has "invested" five million of her "own money"--and she has multi-millions more in her bank account--in her campaign.

JEM you are wrong. Obama showed he knew everything during the debate. Hill looked mean, whined continually and kept making excuses about her taxes.Greatness only comes once in a lifetime. Hill doesnt have it. She is 4 years too late. Her scare tactics and constant negativity will backfire. The Dems want a calm hand and an intelligence that goes beyond bickering. Obama will surround himself with the top people on all levels to move this forward. Hill represents the past along wih her drunk husband. Edwards, Biden, Richardson and Bloomberg will endorse Obama and it will be over.
Hill needs to leave with grace or she will ruin her career.

By the way, overseas not oversees (toyally different meaning) JEM! Also overseas is figurative speech not literal. Can people try to argue against Obama on substance or is it just going to be crying, figure of speech arguments and politics as usual such as "he is a Muslim", and so what if he is a muslim? which he is not.

This is what I've been saying: the more you attack Obama, the stronger he becomes, and the more appealing he becomes.

There's a reason why McCain and Bush are attacking Obama before he's won the nomination: they know that Obama will win it, and Bush, McCain and the GOP elite hope that Obama ends up being another repeat of John Kerry, being always on the defensive and an out of touch liberal. Obama is not only not another repeat of John Kerry, he puts those who attack him on the offensive. Just look at Hillary's camapign, which began with double digit leads over Obama, now shrunk to virtually no competition. And McCain is gonna stomp Obama in November, yeah right. Obama is the GOP's worst nightmare, if Obama could crush and beat Hillary to a pulp, then he won't even have to take the gloves off for McCain, because McCain can't even get GOP support, even with McCain breathing in Bush air. If Obama cinches the nomination, he's well on his way to making history as the first African American president.

Sen. Clinton is a smug, arrogant whiner. She may be a very intelligent woman but she has no idea how to communicate her ideas or positions without losing her temper when others disagree. Funny how when Russert read her comments on NAFTA during the debate she claimed he didn't have "all the records."

She is a do-anything, say-anything spin-meister who isn't used to not getting her own way. Release the tax records, stop blaming G. Bush for your vote on the war and stop mocking those who don't agree w/you...and then GO AWAY!

JEM, that really is a nit you pick there about NAFTA not affecting jobs going overseas. Most people understand that Mexico is not overseas, but they lump in losses to China and India with those lost to Mexico. You are strgictly correct, while completely missing the bigger issue.

Since when is "overseas" spelled "oversees"?

OBAMA 08

Regarding the NAFTA comment above, our government gives tax breaks for doing business with disadvantaged third world countries. Once a free trade agreement is in effect we cut out tarrifs/ or reduce them to a level that makes it advantagous to trade with another country. Companies and Corporations send jobs to other countries not the government. The government just set up policies that make it advantagous to Big Business to conduct business with these country's. It is also supposed to make it advantagous for other coutry's to do business with us. It is the labor costs in these other countries that cause companies to move their plants to these countries thus gaining the advantage of lower labor costs as well as tax breaks for buying product from these counties.

Barack continues to hone his campaign skills while Billary flounders.

"Oversees"! Do a spellcheck before calling someone ignorant. And yes...you can get to Canada and Mexico by the Atlantic or the Pacific if you want to be technical.

"Earlier in the presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton had the distinct ability to intimidate Barack Obama. During their many initial debates, she would lock her eyes on him each time he talked, making him visibly uncomfortable and seemingly incapable of even making eye contact."

Let this be a lesson to all of you parents out there.

Obama was clearly raised with enough moral fiber that he could overcome ma' Clinton's death stare of intimidation.

Raise your children so that no one - no matter how black, white or scary looking - can intimidate your kids. Give them the courage to say "No" and the moral integrity to fight off attempts at intimidation."

If Barack is successful in getting to the White House, this will serve him well.

Recall that JFK himself made bad decisions from the start because he, too, was intimidated by military personnel and others who thought they were smarter than he was.

No one is smarter than you, Barack. Trust your good judgment.

As Obama stated in the debate in Ohio last week, Hillary only likes to take credit for the good things that happened during her husband's presidency, and discount the bad. She then chalks this up as what she has done. Maybe we should see her experience as being at the end of strings. Which is exactly where we can assume her presidency to be. Let's nominate the candidate for CHANGE. Go Obama!

America needs a total man. This man is Obama.
Ouma from San Antonio,TX

Goooooooooo Hillary, you can do it. My votes on you.

Nobody would've voted for Obam if Oprah didn't step in to help him out.
The win in Massachusetts was the biggest slap in the face of those how opposed Hillary. She has CA and NY who are the biggest states.
Hillary, more power to you. American needs you in the White House and no one else.

In each debate Obama has had time to think about his answers-because he's always asked 2nd. His answers are always lacking substance. He says what ya want to hear when you want to hear it, and frankly that scares the sh@t out of me. People are believing him when he has no set plans. Also, he hasn't been in the public eye long enough for us to know who his "cronies" are-which may all be muslim. His father was a muslim and Obama went to a muslim school. Ya know the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Therefore, if Hillary doesn't win the nomination, I'm voting for McCain! We'll have four more of the same-but at least we won't be dead!

As should be obvious from the above article, Barack [middle name Eric Zorn forbids us to say] Obama has great appeal to the Democratic Party's core constituency.

That core constituency being: Newspaper reporters.

JEM,

One of the problems with NAFTA is that many jobs did go overseas.

The naive ASSumption among right wing talkshow host and their followers. Is that all the American jobs that left America as a result of NAFTA went to Mexico or Canada. For instance a company could open an office in Mexico or Canada and have the products manufactured in China.

Whatever happnened to the so called uniters.

Obamas crack pot followers are already targeting moderate democrats for not being left enough. They are targeting centrist democratic congressmen and congresswomen for extinction. Even if Obama talks about uniting, his nutty groupies wont ever allow disenting voices.
I hope they lose to the voice of moderation.

Very interesting article. Sen. Obama is in many ways, the ideal 'perfect pupil'. I have been watching him since last year. Everyday he gets better, showing us someting about him. It's very positive. His calming presence bodes well. I like Sen Clinton, either is fine with me. I will support whoever comes out.

Mr. Tackett, would you mind pointing out the specific debate where you saw Sen. Obama "cower" to Sen. Clinton? I've watched all the debates and can't recall that moment at all.

When this ends Tuesday Obama will reach out to Hill-Raisers and say we need to unite to move forward. He will also commend Hill eventhough she doesnt deserve it. Class always wins. When you use dirty tactics you always lose. Hill has shown that she is a SORE LOSER. Her campaign has been run horribly while Obama has been so organized. This is just a glimpse inot his mind. Organization is key as well as consistency. Hill has been all over the place.

Nice column.

FRAMING THE ARGUEMENT AND STRATIGIC INTELLIGENCE
It takes stratigic intelligence to properly frame any arguement. Hillary lacks the ability to fully grasp this. A good example is NAFTA, she allowed this to digress into a undefensible position. She allowed herself to appear to be in favor exporting jobs overseas. She could have changed the framework but instead she walked into checkmate again. This consistent pattern of thinking stratigically, is NOT a gender issue. One only has to listen to Samantha Powers and you can see a Woman thinking deeply about stratigic issues. No Hillary's problem is that people who are complete simpletons, such as myself, find her thinking process lacking. I've had a president that I know I'm smarter than, and I don't want another. Hillary's wonkish grasp does not demonstrate critical thinking for moving forward. It demonstrates parroting skills which in past elections has been the only thing we have had to select, this election we have something more that the same old to choose from.

Wow, so now the stares of Clinton had something to do with what the media would like to envision in their beloved candidate as Senator Obama's "uneasiness." Yeah okay. It had nothing to do with the fact she's more put together and experienced. While the media drones following their inexperienced Senator were out trying to spin Obama's gaffe's into the "new and up coming way to deal with hostile leaders" aka will meet without preconditions, in the last debate Obama flopped and admitted he would meet with "evidence of" aka preconditions. Meanwhile, every one under the sun knew that Hillary was right, but the Obamanation was out stoning Hillary for her answer even if that meant throwing someone like Margret Thatcher-experienced diplomatically--, who agreed with Hillary, under the bus. Hillary's an awesome debator, very intelligent, and finely attuned. You can't take that away from her. The fact that this media has been set up from the get go -- hung up on cheery picking her answers to confirm a negative image of her is their problem. This has nothing to do with stares. (BTW he equally stared at her, and if you knew anything about body language you're "uneasy" Senator has a tendency to do that chin up--looking down at you aka superiority.)

This had everything to do with Obama having to take off his training wheels, while Hillary is "ready on day one." The debates showed this. But the media knows best. The best candidate is the one for whom this is a trail and error learning process. That's the one we want against a experienced Republican; who btw I would not underestimate. That's the one we want in the White House. The media told us to vote that way. The media will serve the Democrat's their heads in November, and if not, then the media has just served us another "uniter" bent on doing "great things" who gets very "frustrated" when people challenge him while he's out being arrogant to the opposite left extreme "sit down with leaders tell them we are Americans this is what we believe in"---now cooperate because we said that.

Intersting contrast of two candidates. Guess who is who?

CANDIDATE1:
Exploits FEARs of common people. Sees people as mere voting blocks. Users divide and conquer as the primary means to scrape through minimum needed votes to get into POWER.

Stoops to any level and uses any means to capture the ROYAL THRONE at ANY cost.

CANDIDATE2:
Positive, level-headed, discerning, unifying, financially prudent.

Believes that democracy is for the people and by the people and plans to curtail special interest influence on government. Shows an
example of it through an unprecedented grass-roots campaign and fund-raising.

Appeals to the higher HOPES and ASPIRATIONS of people to elect him the LEADER OF THIS GREAT NATION.

This is another article "carrying the water bucket" for Obama. Obama is perfect. Funny you picked out one incident for M. Obama. That woman looks angry. What's the deal? She must realize everybody doesn't love them. She insults Blacks when she dumbs down her words when speaking to mostly black audiences. You white so called journalists just don't get it.

Most beings with 'sentient thought'[despite CHINESE DISHWASHERS+2 YEAR-OLDS] despise HILLARY and her pretend-husband D^CKHEAD!!! Most people full well realize the ambitions/quest for power of this rotten duo!!! HILLARY a FEMALE FASCIST FUHRER wannabe not as smart not as articulate not as good-looking as 'IL DUCE - BENITO MUSSOLINI' bu then again a lot of 'UGKINESS/CORRUPTION' is hidden under horrendous-laughable "...asbestos pants-suits"!!!

Bill Clinton, at least, must believe a surprise is in the making in the Texas and Ohio primaries.

I hear he is already stocking up on cigars.

Chavez and Ahmedinejad are creating trouble at 3am. Phone rings. Someone at the other end says 'Chavez and Ahmedinejad are creating nuisance across the Ocean, how are you going to cope with it". And Madame President starts tearing like she did in New Hampshire.

I remember how J.F.K.united the country with his personable, calming, and postive personality. Gee,he made me feel so confident!Guess what-Obama displays the J.F.K.charisma. We are so lucky that he showed up. Thanks Barack Obama

Resume' for the next President (God Help Us).....

Hillary Clinton has been telling America that she is the most qualified candidate for president based on her 'record,' which she says includes her eight years in the White House as First Lady - or 'co-president' - and her seven years in the Senate. Here is a reminder of what that record includes: - As First Lady, Hillary assumed authority over Health Care Reform, a process that cost the taxpayers over $13 million. She told both Bill Bradley and Patrick Moynihan, key votes needed to pass her legislation, that she would 'demonize' anyone who opposed it. But it was opposed; she couldn't even get it to a vote in a Congress controlled by her own party. (And in the next election, her party lost control of both the House and Senate.)

Hillary assumed authority over selecting a female Attorney General. Her first two recommendations, Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood, were forced to withdraw their names from consideration. She then chose Janet Reno. Janet Reno has since been described by Bill himself as 'my worst mistake.' - Hillary recommended Lani Guanier for head of the Civil Rights Commission. When Guanier's radical views became known, her name had to be withdrawn.

Hillary recommended her former law partners, Web Hubbell, Vince Foster, and William Kennedy for positions in the Justice Department, White House staff, and the Treasury, respectively. Hubbell was later imprisoned, Foster committed suicide, and Kennedy was forced to resign.

Hillary also recommended a close friend of the Clintons, Craig Livingstone, for the position of director of White House security. When Livingstone was investigated for the improper access of up to 900 FBI files of Clinton enemies (“Filegate”) and the widespread use of drugs by White House staff, both Hillary and her husband denied knowing him. FBI agent Dennis Sculimbrene confirmed in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 1996, both the drug use and Hillary's involvement in hiring Livingstone. After that, the FBI closed its White House Liaison Office, after serving seven presidents for over thirty years.

In order to open “slots” in the White House for her friends the Thomasons (to whom millions of dollars in travel contracts could be awarded), Hillary had the entire staff of the White House Travel Office fired; they were reported to the FBI for 'gross mismanagement' and their reputations ruined. After a thirty-month investigation, only one, Billy Dale, was charged with a crime - mixing personal money with White House funds when he cashed checks. The jury acquitted him in less than two hours.

Another of Hillary's assumed duties was directing the 'bimbo eruption squad' and scandal defense: ---- She urged her husband not to settle the Paula Jones lawsuit. ---- She refused to release the Whitewater documents, which led to the appointment of Ken Starr as Special Prosecutor. After $80 million dollars of taxpayer money was spent, Starr's investigation led to Monica Lewinsky, which led to Bill lying about and later admitting his affairs. ---- Then they had to settle with Paula Jones after all. ---- And Bill lost his law license for lying to the grand jury ---- And Bill was impeached by the House. ---- And Hillary almost got herself indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice (she avoided it mostly because she repeated, 'I do not recall,' 'I have no recollection,' and 'I don't know' 56 times under oath). - Hillary wrote 'It Takes a Village,' demonstrating her Socialist viewpoint.

Hillary decided to seek election to the Senate in a state she had never lived in. Her husband pardoned FALN terrorists in order to get Latino support and the New Square Hassidim to get Jewish support. Hillary also had Bill pardon her brother's clients, for a small fee, to get financial support. - Then Hillary left the White House, but later had to return $200,000 in White House furniture, china, and artwork she had stolen. - In the campaign for the Senate, Hillary played the 'woman card' by portraying her opponent (Lazio) as a bully picking on her. - Hillary's husband further protected her by asking the National Archives to withhold from the public until 2012 many records of their time in the White House, including much of Hillary's correspondence and her calendars. (There are ongoing lawsuits to force the release of those records.)

As the junior Senator from New York, Hillary has passed no major legislation. She has deferred to the senior Senator (Schumer) to tend to the needs of New Yorkers, even on the hot issue of medical problems of workers involved in the cleanup of Ground Zero after 9/11. - Hillary's one notable vote; supporting the plan to invade Iraq, she has since disavowed.

Quite a resume’. Sounds more like an organized crime family’s rap sheet.

If Mrs Billary is going to run the white house the way she runs her campaign (bad budgeting, lack of planning, taking victory for granted, etc, god help america!!!!!!!!

Prince Harry dating Chelsea Clinton might help the campaign with all the positive British press:
