The Swamp

More bad news for the Veterans Affairs Department. A class-action lawsuit was filed today against departing Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson, his agency and other governmental plaintiffs by veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars who say they didn't receive the medical care to which they were they were entitled for their post-traumatic stress disorder.

The agency has been one of the most beleaguered of all the federal departments, criticized for long waits and inconvenient distances between the veterans and the services they seek. There've also been privacy problems with veterans records.

The agency with the mission to "care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan," words of Abraham Lincoln that are on plaques outside the headquarters building near the White House, is clearly itself in need of help.

According to the Associated Press story:

The lawsuit comes amid intense political and public scrutiny of the VA and Pentagon following reports of shoddy outpatient care of injured soldiers at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and elsewhere.

"Unless systemic and drastic measures are instituted immediately, the costs to these veterans, their families and our nation will be incalculable, including broken families, a new generation of unemployed and homeless veterans, increases in drug abuse and alcoholism, and crushing burdens on the health care delivery system," the complaint says.

It asks that a federal court order the VA to make immediate improvements.

Jim Nicholson is another "Brownie". A former RNC Bushie. My mother in law called this type "Ward Heelies". They are an important part of campaigns but have to be supported as reward for political efforts despite
a lack of competence.
They try to put them where they can do no harm but made a mistake this time.

Here come the Democrat Trial Lawyers with the class action suit to collect money for lawyers from the U.S. Government. It is we the txpayers who will pay for these greedy lawyers and heaqdline grabbers. Only Democrats could get ordinary people to like trial lawyers. The vetrans won't win the lawyers will. Jerry White, Springfield, IL

Here's another fine example of this pathetic Republican administration "Supporting The Troops".....not.

At least Little Johnny Dipstick put a yellow bumper sticker on his Chevy Vega to show that he supports the troops, that's more than Chainsaw Dick and the Decider have done.

Ah Unemployed Johnny E., I don't drive a piece of garbage. I drive a $36,000 car in the fully equipped Nissan Murano. See what happens when you have a job, make some money?
Anyway, to get to more grownup comments, it certainly seems the VA hospitals let the Vets down, though VA hospitals never were all that good. Still, no excuse. If they did wrong, then the Vets deserve to collect, and yes, not the trial lawyers.

This is exactly what you'll have if we get Universal Health Care run by the U.S. government.
In Canada you have to wait 16 months to get a hip re-placement....The Canadians come here so they won't die.
It's a mess in Canada and in Europe...

Hi, my name's "More Patriotic Than Thou."

I've a right wing tough guy Republican although I've never been in the military myself. I want only the very best for our military. I just don't want to pay for it.

Thanks for understanding.

Veterans with PTSD and other extremely serious combat related health problems and morons debating cars and lawyers.

Geniuses, keep your eyes on the prize - OUR MILITARY COMBAT VETERANS!

Ah, Doug, please tell us who first brought up the car thing, OK?
And then after you answer that question, please answer what I said about the Vets and VA?
And to clue you in and help you answer those questions, my belief is the Vets should get whatever they need at whatever the cost and whatever it takes to give them some semblance of a quality life.

Despite the record low approval ratings, President Bush and his administration are still arrogant and blinded by the Iraq War. The people of this country are fed up with Bush’s senseless war and the lack of domestic policies. There are much more important issues in this world that the US should be taking part in, such as global poverty. According to the Borgen Project, whose goal is to fight global poverty, US is one of the nations pledged in the Millennium Development Project. MDP is aimed at eliminating world poverty in half by the year 2015. However, this country has done anything but reducing poverty. The war on “terror” has created more poverty, more hunger and more violence within Iraq and the United States. It is time for this country’s president to rethink the direction where this great nation is going. Perhaps the second lowest approval rating since Watergate will be a wake up call to President Bush.

pillow is definitely an expert when it comes to Canadian and European healthcare. Perhaps he can explain why people in Britain are actually healthier than people in the US.

Regardless of what you feel about lawyers, these vets would not be able to bring suit and get some type of compensation without them. Also, how do any of you know where these lawyers are from? Maybe they have served themselves and seen what war does to a person's mind and body. I say the jury is out on the people trying to help. And yes, they should be paid for their work just like anyone else.

"In Canada you have to wait 16 months to get a hip re-placement...."

And in the United States There are 46 million americans, nearly 16% of the population, who cannot get a hip replacement at all because they do not have health insurance.

Republicans believe in rationing health care based on wealth.

Tony, in the United States, whether you have health insurance or not, you still get health care. You can go to just about any clinic and be treated. If you're brought to a hospital, you get treated.
For you folks such in love with government-run health care, please look to the VA hospitals. And, please do not tell me they were model health care facilities until "Smirky McFlightsuit" came along. The VA hospitals have been a sham for years and years now.

John D.,

The American Cancer Soceity and the AMA recommend colonoscopy screening every five years for asymptomatic people, then ever three years thereafter for benign symptomatic individuals (like Dubya).

Pray tell, what clinic and/or emergency room provides these screenings?

Ok, Doug, not many. Sorry, but there is a thing called insurance too. And there are a host of plans that provide coverage for major illnesses such as cancer as well as tests like colonoscopies. Yeah, you have to pay for the insurance and some medical costs, but nothing is free, no matter how you look at it.
Regardless, there is no crisis in the U.S. and Americans keep living longer and longer. As far as health in the U.S. compared to other countries, there are lots of factors that determine average living age such as how many die via crimes, eating habits, driving, drunk driving, etc.

This isn't completely true. I'm kind of peripherally involved in the health care industry and I know the hospital across the street turns people away if they don't have insurance. I don't know if you've noticed, but clinics are shutting down, at least in Cook County.

And yes, I wanted to see Smirky McFlightsuit again. I'll have to remember that one. Thanks, John!

Wow! It must be wall-to-wall chicks at your place.

John D.,

So your message to children, the poor, the indigent disabled without health care/insurance is what?

WWJD do?

"Wow! It must be wall-to-wall chicks at your place."

Or not.

Johnny D-

A person can't go to the emergency room and demand a hip replacement. A person can't go to the emergency room and demand preventiove care.

"Regardless, there is no crisis in the U.S. and Americans keep living longer and longer"

I really think that the 16% of americans without access to decent healthcare because they don't have insurance would find it to be a crisis. Apparently the health of 16% of American's is of no concern to you however. Sad.

more BS johnD? at least u tried this time...

"it certainly seems the VA hospitals let the Vets down, though VA hospitals never were all that good. Still, no excuse. If they did wrong, then the Vets deserve to collect, and yes, not the trial lawyers."

but here is the problem D, without the lawyers the vets get Nothing, cause the greedy repugs running this show are tighter wads than the worst villain from any dickens novel... GOP is the party of scrooge for sure...

the VA hospitals have been a sham for years and years...

gee, i wonder if that has anythiing to do witht the 'all taxes are a pinko commie conspiracy' crowd??

greedy sleazebags

Paulo, can you post a link to EVEN ONE STORY about someone dying because they DIDN'T get a hip replacement surgery quicker than 16 months?

The "wing nuts" are out in force on this one. I am certain it is because they see the writing on the wall. The Iraq fiasco may cause a huge influx of democrats into the 2008 Congress. If the majority is large it may be intimidated into backing a single payer health plan. The " wing nuts" are starting their defence now.
