And so it begins…

Senator Christopher Dodd, one of the dozen or so top Democrats thinking of vying for the 2008 presidential nomination, will be in Johnson County, Iowa, next Saturday for a barbecue.

The event, part of a weekend-long trip to the nation's first caucus state, will be the first serious test of whether the Connecticut Democrat can win over crowds like he has in his home state. Dodd was in Florida in July touting his possible candidacy, but he didn't venture beyond the Broward County convention center, where state Democrats were meeting.

And though he got a good reception, he was well-known to those activists, so Iowa is likely to be a better barometer of support. Dodd will appear at the North Liberty Community Center in Iowa, along with a potential 2008 rival, Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack.

He'll have to brush up on his midwestern football, though, and keep his northeastern loyalties quiet. Prior to the event, some Democrats can attend a special "Hawkeye Reception" where they can watch Iowa play at Syracuse.
