Forget the unattractive promise of low pay, seersucker suits, speaking in circles with a French bureaucrat or muggy nights beneath mosquito netting in some Malaysian village.
Suddenly, being an American diplomat looks to be seductive.
A new survey identifying dream, would-be employers for more than 37,000 American undergraduates (attending what are called 207 "leading universities") ranks the U.S. Department of State as the third most "ideal employer," according to the American Undergraduate Edition, conducted and published by the research and communications firm Universum.
State shot up to third on this year's list like a bullet, ranking just 36th last year.
And guess who came in fourth and fifth?
How about the FBI and CIA, respectively ... That places three of the top five "ideal" employers in the public-service sector, something that never even came close to happening in the pre-9/11 world.
Seems as though the terrorist attacks and continuing danger still inspire young people to serve their nation -- or, at least to tell pollsters they want to serve their nation. State, FBI and CIA outranked Microsoft, ipod-maker Apple and even BMW.
Once they find out a job at State can involve spending a year stamping passports in some place like Albania ... well, maybe they'll have second thoughts.
