Guns on our streets are hurting and killing innocent people! This isn't about legal hunting, so much as it is about illegal weapons, on the street, and in gang members hands!

Personally, I think hunting is a disgusting practice, barbaric, but I don't challenge anyone's right to live in any form or manner that doesn't hurt another living thing! As for abortion, that should be left up to the individuals involved, not the state! Government should have no say over what we do with our bodies! WHATSOEVER! As long as we are not hurting another living sentient being, what we do with our own bodies should be our own business, not the governments! That is how we should gauge every issue, so we can always avoid extremes! Extreme views are tearing this country apart!

We can no longer continue to divide this country into two camps, those for and those against,(blue & red states) there has to be a middle ground! We have to look at each issue logically and rationally, and stop allowing certain groups and individuals the right to sway votes with these hot button issues. It is funny how fast we forget the real issues in this country! It is funny how some individuals like to become mettlesome and problematic, using the same old scare tactics over and over again! When are we going to wake up in this country and see government for what it is? It is an institution created to govern, not dictate! If you want a dictatorship, there are a lot of countries that will serve you one on a golden platter! This is not one of them!

We need to reclaim our civil rights in this country, and stop allowing these hot button issues, to sway our thinking! We need to think rationally, intelligently, and calmly, so we can once again claim this country for the masses, not the few! We have bigger issues to deal with at hand, but a certain party continues to use scare tactics to win elections!

We can no longer allow our differences to divide us! We need to get it right this time, because our country demands that of us! That is what it means to be AMERICAN, that is what it means to love G-d and this country! Doing the right thing, for the right reasons, because each and every one of us is a living example of what is RIGHT, about the UNITED STATES of AMERICA!

The animals that provide the meat you eat are subjected to horrific conditions on industrial farms. My experience has been that the vast majority of those who hunt respect the land and the animals far more than the typical grocery shopper picking up a steak.

Our nations q3 gdp was 3%. We are not in a recession. Yes Washington was spending money like a drunken sailor, but that was partially due to the democrat congress. BTW, the current congress has the absolute lowest approval ratings of any congress in history. In fact, it is an embarassment. As for the last 8 years "not being so horrible" - really? We were attacked by terrorists who desroyed the WTC. We didn't find them or stop them. We invaded another country for totally unrelated (and, as it turns out, fabricated) reasons. We lost over 1000 American lives there. Our currency has been seriously devalued. Inflation is rapidly increasing. Our real purchasing power has dropped dramatically. Jobs have been shipped overseas with alarming alacrity. Finally, many of us have been kicked out of our homes because the government didn't see fit to regulate credit and mortgage markets driven by reckless profiteers, until it was too late. In fact, I could propose that last the eulogy for the entire Bush administration: "It was alredy too late".
Finally, thank you for proving something I have long suspected - that jerks like you have no respect for the brave men & women who serve our country in the Armed Forces. For you to say that we haven't been attacked because "the terrorists are afraid of us" is totally omitting the fact that our brave sons & daughters taught them that fear in the caves of Afghanistan and all over the world! It's not because of who we are that they fear us, it's because we have the best army with the best soldiers in the world.

Ignorance must really be bliss. How else, over so many years, could the G.O.P. get away with ridiculing all things liberal?

Troglodytes on the right are no respecters of reality. They say the most absurd things and hardly anyone calls them on it. Evolution? Don’t you believe it. Global warming? A figment of the liberal imagination.

Liberals have been so cowed by the pummeling they’ve taken from the right that they’ve tried to shed their own identity, calling themselves everything but liberal and hoping to pass conservative muster by presenting themselves as hyper-religious and lifelong lovers of rifles, handguns, whatever.

So there was Hillary Clinton, of all people, sponsoring legislation to ban flag-burning; and Barack Obama, who once opposed the death penalty, morphing into someone who not only supports it, but supports it in cases that don’t even involve a homicide.

Anyway, the Republicans were back at it last week at their convention. Mitt Romney wasn’t content to insist that he personally knows that “liberals don’t have a clue.” He complained loudly that the federal government right now is too liberal.

“We need change, all right,” he said. “Change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington.”

Why liberals don’t stand up to this garbage, I don’t know. Without the extraordinary contribution of liberals — from the mightiest presidents to the most unheralded protesters and organizers — the United States would be a much, much worse place than it is today.

There would be absolutely no chance that a Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton or Sarah Palin could make a credible run for the highest offices in the land. Conservatives would never have allowed it.

Civil rights? Women’s rights? Liberals went to the mat for them time and again against ugly, vicious and sometimes murderous opposition. They should be forever proud.

The liberals who didn’t have a clue gave us Social Security and unemployment insurance, both of which were contained in the original Social Security Act. Most conservatives despised the very idea of this assistance to struggling Americans. Republicans hated Social Security, but most were afraid to give full throat to their opposition in public at the height of the Depression.

“In the procedural motions that preceded final passage,” wrote historian Jean Edward Smith in his biography, “FDR,” “House Republicans voted almost unanimously against Social Security. But when the final up-or-down vote came on April 19 [1935], fewer than half were prepared to go on record against.”

Liberals who didn’t have a clue gave us Medicare and Medicaid. Quick, how many of you (or your loved ones) are benefiting mightily from these programs, even as we speak. The idea that Republicans are proud of Ronald Reagan, who saw Medicare as “the advance wave of socialism,” while Democrats are ashamed of Lyndon Johnson, whose legislative genius made this wonderful, life-saving concept real, is insane.

When Johnson signed the Medicare bill into law in the presence of Harry Truman in 1965, he said: “No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine.”

Reagan, on the other hand, according to Johnson biographer Robert Dallek, “predicted that Medicare would compel Americans to spend their ‘sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was like in America when men were free.’ ”

Scary.

Without the many great and noble deeds of liberals over the past six or seven decades, America would hardly be recognizable to today’s young people. Liberals (including liberal Republicans, who have since been mostly drummed out of the party) ended legalized racial segregation and gender discrimination.

Humiliation imposed by custom and enforced by government had been the order of the day for blacks and women before men and women of good will and liberal persuasion stepped up their long (and not yet ended) campaign to change things. Liberals gave this country Head Start and legal services and the food stamp program. They fought for cleaner air (there was a time when you could barely see Los Angeles) and cleaner water (there were rivers in America that actually caught fire).

Liberals. Your food is safer because of them, and so are your children’s clothing and toys. Your workplace is safer. Your ability (or that of your children or grandchildren) to go to college is manifestly easier.

It would take volumes to adequately cover the enhancements to the quality of American lives and the greatness of American society that have been wrought by people whose politics were unabashedly liberal. It is a track record that deserves to be celebrated, not ridiculed or scorned.

Self-hatred is a terrible thing. Just ask that arch-conservative Clarence Thomas.

Liberals need to get over it.

I did not particularly find the cartoon funny as it does lack substance, but then again, that's part of the message, isn't it?

The reason Jake doesn't need a gun to protect himself is because the USA is so ingrained, properly, in the rule of law. But don't you dare forget that you have been given the right and freedom to make your comments by gun carrying citizens in our past and present history.

And why do Americans run so quickly to blame one man, Bush? I say because Americans have a very short memory in addition to being short sighted. If you look back with 20/20 hindsight, you may be surprised to discover that the policies enacted by one president affect the next presidency much more than his own. That being said, Clinton reaped the rewards of the policies and economics of Reagan and Bush the Elder. But Clinton did practically nothing except keep Greenspan in place.

Clinton even allowed Bin Laden to get away and primed us for 9/11. But, of course, most here have already forgotten that day. However, right or wrong, 9/11 set the set the stage for Bush's presidency, He has been required to re-act much more than being allowed to be pro-active.

And Bush is right in keeping the fight in the terrorist's backyard rather than our own. This has given us the time needed to re-build our intelligence network so nearly decimated but Carter, Reagan, and Clinton.

And lastly, the president is not the total government. Do not forget your Democratic congress that has made oh so much happen. They, congress, have as much of an obligation to lead and serve you, the American citizen, if not more than the president. But I don't see signs in the streets about them.

The foregoing are just some observations by a Mexican national, here legally, and a proud veteran of the United States Army. May God bless America.

And I hardly expect Biden will be defenseless. Biden was once known to have stated that Rudolph Guiliani had only three parts to any sentence he used: a noun, a verb, and a 9/11. About the only thing that might restrain Biden is this notion that beating up on poor little Mrs. Palin might make him look sexist. If she shows up gunning for him, though, he'll have a much better case for letting lose.

Nobody required Bush to be reactionist, he chose to be. It shows. You can say that Clinton had nothing to do with the great economy, but I'd say this: he didn't get in the way. Bush and the Republican Congress bent over backwards to help their friends, and look what it got us.

As for the Democratic Congress not doing much, you have the Republican minority in the Senate to thank for that: they became the most obstructive minority in the senate in our nation's history, with a year to spare.

If you expect change to come of the Republican party, you have only to look to them to see how strongly they've fought against it.

As for gun carrying citizens, I'll give them their due, but for heavens sake, this is a country built on the rule of law. It isn't a gun that guarantees our freedom, but an honored agreement that enshrines those freedoms as central to our government.

I look at how this affects me, and I know i could buy BETTER insurance than what I have right now with the tax credit. especially if I could buy health insurance like i buy car insurance. Since Americans LOVE to talk a game, but rarely do anything about it, we are the ones responsible for all of these messes. I lost every drop of faith in the ability of my fellow citizens to improve their lot.

Why are American politicians almost exclusively cast as selfish, corrupt and ignorant apparatchiks in service of their corporate and elite masters? When Oliver North was giving that testimony to the Senate he never mentioned Bin Laden because Bin Laden was a teenager in an English middle school at that time.

Like the vast majority of 'red-neck' Republicans, Mr Concerned American really believes in all of the right-wing diatribe including the 'trickle-down' economic theory, the 'Clinton set-him-up" theory and "there really are WMDs in Iraq" boast.

Before 2012, the Republicans need to redefine their party as to who they truly represent: the evangelical minority or the moderates who let the evangelicals choose their VP candidate. The Republican minority evangelicals have to stop stamping their feet if they don't get their way and learn to live with the fact that their party LOST this election. It was time for a change of political party as the present one for the past eight years has redefined what is in the Constitution (torture, wiretapping, suspension of habeas corpus). I will say one thing: if the economy had not been in the toilet (oh the economy is strong right now said Mc Cain) then the election would have been much closer. As someone (I think it was a former Arkansas Governor) once said, 'It's the economy stupid!'
